Almayer's Folly (1895)
Joseph Conrad's first novel Almayer's Folly, published in 1895, is set in the late 19th century. Dutch trader Kaspar Almayer, a white European, married to a native Malayan, builds a large house in anticipation of British occupation but it fails to materialise. The house remains unfinished and Dutch seamen nickname it “Almayer’s Folly.”
An Outcast of the Islands (1896)
Conrad’s second novel details the undoing of Peter Willems, an immoral man on the run who finds refuge in a hidden native village but betrays his benefactors over lust.
The Rescue (1920)
A romantic novel and the last of the three novels to be published but the timeline of the novel precedes Almayer's Folly and An Outcast of the Islands.

He is regarded as one of the greatest writers in the English language and, although he did not speak English fluently until his twenties, he became a master prose stylist who brought a non-English sensibility into English literature. This contains the three Tom Lingard stories, Almayer's Folly, An Outcast if the Islands, and The Rescue which are thematically linked via the character of of Tom Lingard. They are set in the Malay archipelago and tell the story of Lingard's career as a trader and adventurer.
One suspects that Conrad was writing from his experiences in the region for his characterisation of the heat induced lethargy, and general hopeless of the white man doomed to spend his life in the tropics is spot on. In short the only character that develops any depth is Lingard, the other whites are just losers, although a certain respect for the natives is to be detected.
