Leonard Bernstein

He was the first conductor born and educated in the United States of America to receive world-wide acclaim. He is perhaps best known for his long conducting relationship with the New York Philharmonic, which included the acclaimed Young People's Concerts series, and his compositions including West Side Story, Candide, and On the Town. He is known to baby boomers primarily as the first classical music conductor to make many television appearances, all between 1954 and 1989. Additionally he had a formidable piano technique and was a highly respected composer. He is one of the most influential figures in the history of American classical music, championing the works of American composers and inspiring the careers of a generation of American musicians.

این کتاب، یک اثر غنی برای کسیه که تازه اوایل راه یادگیری موسیقیه. کسی که آنچنان علمی در زمینه موسیقی نداره و از واژه های تخصصی هم سر درنمیاره.
در این آموزشها، برنستاین با لحنی صمیمی مباحث رو توضیح داده و هرجا لازم بوده مثال زده، و نتهای اون مثال هم در کتاب چاپ شدن.
اینجا دقیقا همونجاییه که مشکل من با این کتاب شروع شد!
ببینید دوستان، مخاطب این کتاب، آدمایی هستن که اول راهن! طبیعتا آدمی که اول راه موسیقی باشه نمیتونه توی ذهنش موومانهای کلاسیک رو (اون هم) فقط از روی نتهاشون تجسم کنه!
این کتاب شدیدا به فایلهای صوتی نیاز داره و تعجب میکنم که نشر چشمه چرا کمکاری کرده!
البته توی نقدهای دوستان خوندم که انتشارات دیگهای هست که دیویدی های این آموزش رو برای فروش ارائه دادن. یعنی به جای خوندن کتاب، بصورت تصویری برنستاین رو و درسهاش رو ببینید.
که خب کاش من هم قبل از خوندن این کتاب، اینو میدونستم! البته شک ندارم که روزی حتما اون دیویدی ها رو تهیه خواهم کرد.
من برای خوندن این کتاب، مینشستم پای پیانو و مثالهاش رو سعی میکردم خودم روی ساز دربیارم، که خب طبیعتا منِ تازه وارد خیلی وقتا هم موفق نمیشدم و دستبهدامن یوتیوب میشدم تا اون قطعه و اون مثال رو پیدا کنم و گوش کنم.
همین اضافهکاریها باعث شد که خوندن این کتاب با اینکه حجم آنچنانی هم نداره، بسیار زیاد زمان ببره. اما از خوندنش راضیام. بهرحال برنستاین رو همه میشناسیم و میدونیم چه آدم باسوادیه، میدونیم چه نابغهای بوده. کتاب هم، کتاب پرباریه.
توصیه میکنم بخونید. البته اگر بگردید و دیویدی هاش رو هم تهیه کنید که دیگه محشره!

با خوندن اين كتاب خيلي چيزهاي زيادي ميتونيد ياد بگيريد يا چيزهايي كه از موسيقي تو ذهنتونه به يك ديد ديگه بهش نگاه شده تو بعضي قسمت هاي كتاب ..ولي من پيشنهاد ميكنم بسته تصويري اين كتاب رو تهيه كنيد به جاي خوندن كتاب تا براي راحتي مثال هاي شنيداري رو كه خود اركستر اجرا ميكنه ببينيد و بهتر متوجه موضوعات بشيد.احتمالا خودم هم يك بار ديگه بايد به صورت تصويري اين كتاب رو بررسي كنم

بحثی در ترجمه ها
من خواندن این کتاب را ابتدا از روی ویراست اول ترجمه/بازنویسی پورتراب - که حدود هشتاد صفحه نسبت به ویراست دوم کمتر است و چندین فصل را ندارد- شروع کردم یعنی کتاب زیر:
وقتی به اواخر آن کتاب نزدیک شدم به دو نسخه ی دیگر از این کتاب دست یافتم. یکی ویراست دوم ترجمه ی پورتراب و دیگری ترجمه ی کاملیا مسیح از کتاب - که محتوای آن مثل ویراست اول ترجمه ی پورتراب است. ترجمه ی کاملیا مسیح با عنوان "دنیای زیبای موسیقی" کتاب زیر است
با نگاهی مختصر متوجه شدم که ترجمه ی کاملیا مسیح در مقابل ترجمه/بازنویسی پورتراب حرفی برای گفتن ندارد. چون پورتراب کتاب را مفصل تر و گویاتر ترجمه کرده. خلاصه اینکه بعد از یکی دو بار مراجعه ترجمه ی کاملیا مسیح را کنار گذاشتم. ویراست دوم ترجمه ی پورتراب هم صرفا چند فصل را به ویراست نخست افزوده است و در محتوای بخش نخست تغییری ایجاد نشده. به همین دلیل من ادامه ی خواندنم را از روی ویراست دوم به انجام رساندم
کتاب ترجمه ی دیگری هم دارد از بابک بوبان که مثل ترجمه ی کاملیا مسیح از انتشارات ماهور است. من آن ترجمه را ندیده ام. در ضمن بوبان و ماهور دی وی دی های تصویری این کنسرت های آموزشی - که این کتاب متن آنها است - را هم منتشر ساخته اند که من آنها را هم ندیده ام
و اما بحث در خود کتاب
کتاب به نظرم جالب و خواندنی است. بزرگترین ایراد آن نبود فایل صوتی قطعات و نت های کتاب است. کسی که چنین کتابی را در دست می گیرد قاعدتا آن حد از موسیقی درکی ندارد که با دیدن نیم صفحه نت موسیقی بتواند آن را به صورت صوتی هم تصور کند - آن هم موسیقی ای با انواع آکوردها و بعضا با چند ملودی موازی. خلاصه اینکه من هر جا که ممکن بود از میوز اسکور [۱] کمک گرفتم و قطعات را پیدا کردم و گوش دادم اما این روش تنها بخشی از نت ها را به صورت صوتی در دسترس من می گذاشت. پس به نظرم خواندن کتاب را باید با دیدن اجراها همراه کرد. خودم اگر اجراها بدستم آید حتما خواهمشان دید
اگر کسی بگوید چه کتابی برای آشنایی با موسیقی به صورت تئوریک و ابتدایی خوب است تا این لحظه این کتاب پیشنهاد من است

Il libro contiene la trascrizione (ricca di illustrazioni e di esempi con notazione musicale) di alcune lezioni tenute dal 1958 ai primi anni '70 da Bernstein di fronte a un pubblico di bambini. Come si dice in quarta di copertina, sia grandi che piccoli possono apprezzare questo libro di alfabetizzazione musicale. A mio avviso il destinatario migliore è un adulto che, davanti a un pianoforte, abbia l'opportunità di leggere con calma il testo e strimpellare gli esempi che contiene. Per un bambino alcuni temi (per esempio gli intervalli o i modi) mi sembrano raccontati in maniera complessa, ma forse mi sbaglio dato il successo delle lezioni di Bernstein, trasmesse per lunghi anni in televisione (altri tempi, altre nazioni...). In ogni caso, ottimo e piacevolissimo.

Leonard Bernstein’s Young People’s Concerts.
It was a matter of luck or fate that I stumbled into this book at a second-hand book market in downtown Athens. It was left unnoticed at the stand as people’s attention was drawn to more popular or modern titles as is usually the case.
In a sense I was also left unnoticed at that period in my life, living in Munich, I met a girl, followed her to France, that didn't really work out and here I was, unemployed and alone back in Greece trying to figure it all out.
We matched I thought, so I bought it.
Little did I know that it would change my life.
Little did I know about classical music too, having only a vague remembrance of musical terms from a few lessons we had back in high school. Truth be told I could not understand much and was almost giving up on it until…

The book contained the audio transcripts from episodes of the Young People’s Concerts series (broadcasted in the US during the 60s), and that was the first clip that I came across while looking for them.
Suddenly it all made sense. What I had been reading on paper I could now understand and feel hearing the music. I was hooked, and alone in my room for days I binge-watched and binge-read anything Bernstein related that I could find. The discovery of classical music offered me the much needed consolation at that time and music being a lonely activity forced me into introspection.
How else, if not by introspecting, can one select among hundreds of interpretations the one that really connects with his emotions and mental state? What difference does it make in your soul the precision and sharpness of this or the intensity and power of this? Which interpretation do you like and why? What feelings or memories do you get?
The answers are inside us.
Music was the catalyst, and with its discovery I was discovering myself. That process of self-awareness resulted in greater confidence and inner strength, and the belief that no matter how difficult times can be I will always have someone to rely on. Me.
Now, in a strange sequence of events, here I am again in Munich facing the same dilemma. Different girl, different country.
In music there is a term when the beginning theme is repeated a second time; recapitulation. But then the theme is repeated in the tonic key, releasing the tension, concluding the piece in harmony and ultimately signifying that everything that preceded happened for a reason.

عنوان اصلی این کتاب young people's concerts هستش و مخاطب حقیقیش بچه هایین که میخوان به طور جدی تری موسیقی رو دنبال کنن. در نتیجه با وجود اینکه یکی از موسیقیدان های بزرگ این کتابو نوشته، زبان کتاب بی نهایت ساده و خودمونیه و پر از نقاشی و مثال!
برنستاین اول کمی در مورد تئوری موسیقی میگه و بعد در مورد چند موضوع پراکنده از جمله فرم سونات، امپرسیونیسم و ارکستراسیون صحبت میکنه.
راستش کتابی نیست که به بزرگسالان توصیه کنم ولی اگر توی فهم تئوری موسیقی اشکال داشتید شاید بعضی مفاهیم رو با این کتاب راحت تر یاد بگیرید. من که خودم دوست داشتم این روند رو که یه سری چیزا برام به زبان ساده مرور شه.
اما بخش امپرسیونیسم و همینطور مقام ها رو توی هر کتابی پیدا نمیکنین و برای من به شخصه خیلی جالب و مفید بود.
از ضعف های کتاب اینه قطعات موسیقی که بهشون اشاره شده همراه کتاب نیست که باید خودتون دنبالش برید و گوش کنید.

Creo que su mayor virtud es que el autor se permite explayarse en los temas que le encantan. El señor Bernstein contagia con su fascinación. Así que no solamente fue un gran músico, sino también un brillante expositor. Para aprender mucho (de música, y también acerca de un tipo genial).

Como documento de algunos de los programas que grabaron y se emitieron desde el Carnegie Hall entre 1959 y 1972 es un libro meritorio. La edición es simpática pero peca un poco de saturación entre el texto las ilustraciones y las partituras. INFINITAMENTE MEJOR Y MÁS RECOMENDADO VER LOS VÍDEOS, todos en YouTube.

فصل هفتم با همهی اختصارش مفید و جالب بود. اینکه موسیقی محلی کشورهارو فقط با گوش کردن تشخیص بدی هیجانانگیزه، و برنستاین خوب از عهدهی توضیح ارتباط تنگاتنگ موسیقی و زبان اقوام مختلف بر اومده؛ این بحث رو جای دیگهای ندیده بودم پیشتر

The lay listener has a surprisingly difficult time understanding symphonic music. When she goes to the symphony, she is likely to find the music quite moving. How to understand it? If she reads her program, she gets mostly music history. That material is surely interesting, but it does not teach her how to listen. If she takes music lessons, she might know some relevant technical details. But again, she has only hints of what to listen for.
Leonard Bernstein’s Young People’s Concerts are the ultimate guide for music listeners. Bernstein carefully chose every question, example, and concept, so that his young audience will understand what it is they are listening to.
The first chapter illustrates this point. In this chapter, Bernstein asks, What does music mean? Contrary to instinct, the meaning cannot be found in the ‘story’ of the piece. When the composer composes, the performer performs, and the listener listens, there is one common purpose that all three share. That purpose is the meaning of music, and it is to make you feel a certain way when you hear it.
Most importantly, Bernstein gives his audience a literal and conceptual vocabulary with which to discuss music. Suddenly, a reader can put her feelings into words. She can intelligently compare her reaction to those of others and consider the composer’s intent. The experience of music becomes central in her experience, even if she supplements it by analyzing history and technique. In this way, she understands the music.
Leonard Bernstein performed over a decade’s worth of Young People’s Concerts, and all were broadcast on television. Editor Jack Gottlieb chose only a few transcripts to edit and expand for this book. Gottlieb’s selections are comprehensive and focus on musical fundamental rather than great works and composers.

The book includes musical notation of all the relevant examples, as well as gorgeous illustrations. Sitting next to a keyboard, the reader can read about a concept, play an example as written, and toy with the idea further.

But recordings of these lectures are readily available online, as are recordings of the works themselves, conducted by Bernstein and others. For a reader with enough attention to follow up and not get distracted, the ability to read, play, and listen to the musical ideas in this book is invaluable. As Gottlieb puts it, “this book challenges you not to be a couch potato” (xv).

"Credo che siate tutti troppo ben educati. Siete stati tirati su troppo bene.
Il primo tempo forte in ciascuna battuta del "tutti" deve durare per l'intera semiminima. Questa è una musica davvero bestiale, portata alle più estreme conseguenze... È primitiva, primordiale, chiamatela come volete. Tutte le note devono essere il più lunghe possibili.
Non è semplicemente "forte" né semplicemente "lunga"... Anche se è entrambe le cose. È anche profonda, pesante.
Immaginate alla sensazione che a volte si ha in primavera, quando senti di essere parte della terra stessa. A tutti voi sarà capitato.
Queste danze vengono eseguite da adolescenti, quindi presumo che voi capiate di cosa parlo. Pensate alle volte (e non dico così per dire) che durante l'adolescenza, lo ricordo come fosse ieri, stai sdraiato su un prato, in primavera o estate, con la faccia in giù e vorresti baciare la terra.

Il primo tempo forte in ciascuna battuta del "tutti" deve durare per l'intera semiminima. Questa è una musica davvero bestiale, portata alle più estreme conseguenze... È primitiva, primordiale, chiamatela come volete. Tutte le note devono essere il più lunghe possibili.
Non è semplicemente "forte" né semplicemente "lunga"... Anche se è entrambe le cose. È anche profonda, pesante.
Immaginate alla sensazione che a volte si ha in primavera, quando senti di essere parte della terra stessa. A tutti voi sarà capitato.
Queste danze vengono eseguite da adolescenti, quindi presumo che voi capiate di cosa parlo. Pensate alle volte (e non dico così per dire) che durante l'adolescenza, lo ricordo come fosse ieri, stai sdraiato su un prato, in primavera o estate, con la faccia in giù e vorresti baciare la terra.
Guardi l'erba crescere, la ascolti crescere e vorresti che ti avvolgesse. Sarà capitato anche a voi.

كتاب به نظرم در واقع براي كساني كه شايد هيچ زمينه اي از موسيقي نداشته باشن و بخوان استارت يادگيريشو بزنن مناسبه.
قبل از خوندن كتابهاي تئوري روون و ساده مثل كتاب پرويز منصوري و... شايد خوندن اين كتاب بهتر باشه چون خيلي ساده تر و با يه ديدگاه جديد راجع به يه سري موضوعات صحبت ميكنه و اوايلش هم راجع به يك سري اسباب موسيقي مثل فواصل و... كه توي تئوري خيلي مهمن صحبت ميشه!
براي من كه رشتم موسيقيه و تئوري موسيقي غرب و ايراني(كه خيلي مفصل تر و سخت تر از موسيقي غربه!) و تاریخ موسیقی رو خوندم چيز خيلي جديدي نداشت و روزنامه وار خوندمش و تمام شد اما با همون زبان ساده و نگاه جديدش، درك يه سري مسائل و كه شايد نفهميده بودم يا حتي سخت فهميده بودم رو راحت تر كرد!
در نتيجه كتاب براي مبتدييان موسيقي يا كساني كه زمينه اي ندارن خيلي خوب و مناسبه اما براي هنرستاني ها، دانشگاهي ها و كساني كه تئوري موسيقي رو جدي كار كردن خيلي حرف تازه اي نداره
هرچند ك خوندنش ضرري هم نداره.

November 4, 2025Цікаво, як у цій книзі порушуються теми вибору й випадковості — нагадує, наскільки все у житті може змінитись через одну дрібницю. Я теж колись замислювався над такими речами після схожої історії, побаченої на сцені театру у Львові. Квитки тоді брав через https://lviv.internet-bilet.ua/uk — зручно, без черг і з нормальним вибором місць. До того ж, тут можна знайти найцікавіші подіі Львову. Взагалі, живі вистави часто допомагають інакше поглянути на прочитане — емоції зовсім інші, ніж від сторінок. Тож якщо після книги хочеться ще більше відчути цю атмосферу, рекомендую спробувати театр — дуже надихає.

Un libro fantastico de la mano de Bernstein, quien ademas de director y compositor es un gran pedagogo. El autor logra con una sencillez ridicula explicar los elementos centrales de la apreciacion musical. Es un libro altamente recomendado para todas aquellas personas amantes de la música que desean entender mejor la expericiencia de la música.

این کتاب در اصل از مجموعه ای به این نام گرفته شده که در اون لیونارد برنشتاین نمامی مباحث کتاب رو با حضور ارکستر توضیح میده.وقتی اون مجموعه رو که اتفاقا تصویری هم هست رو تهیه و نگاه کنید متوجه میشید که چقدر بهتره و ترجمه ی این کتاب چفدر ضعیفه.پیشنهاد میکنم حتما این مجموعه رو تهیه کنید

عنوان فارسی کتاب "تجزیه و تحلیل موسیقی برای جوانان" هست. کتاب از بخش های مختلفی تشکیل شده و نوسینده در هر بخش سعی کرده مفاهیم اساسی موسیقی را تبیین کنه. به طور کلی خوندن کتاب برای کسایی که آشنایی کمی با موسیقی دارن میتونه جالب باشه. به نظر من پیئستگی مطالب کتاب خیلی خوب نیست. حالا این موضوع ممکنه به دلیل ترجمه کتاب باشه و یا اینکه از اطلاعات کم من در مورد موسیقی نشات بگیره. موضوع مهم دیگه اینه که مسلما مفاهیم کتاب عمدتاً مربوط به فرمهای موسیقی کلاسیک هستند و اگر چه بعضی از مفاهیم در همه انواع موسیقی مشترک هستند ولی نویسنده موسیقی کلاسیک را عمدتاً تجزیه و تحلیل کرده. یکی از نقاط قوت کتاب اینه که بخش ها کاملا ساده نوشته شدن و این فهم مطالب را آسون میکنه. فکر میکنم خیلی خوبه که کتابهای آموزش مفاهیم موسیقی با نوار یا سی دی اگه همراه باشه اثر خیلی بهتری داره و من نمیدونم نسخه اصلی کتاب چنین چیزی داشته یا نه.

اين كتاب در اصل مجموعه اي از سخنراني هاي لئونارد برنستاين رهبر اركستر آمريكايي معاصره. سيستم اين سخنرانيها كه در كارنگي هال نيويورك برگزار ميشده اينطور بوده كه برنستاين يه مبحث رو شروع مي كنه و هر جا مثالي لازم باشه اركستر سمفونيك ( كه به نظرم اركستر سمفونيك نيويورك باشه) اون رو اجرا مي كنند. بعدا اين سخنرانيها كتاب شده و اومدن آهنگهايي رو كه اركستر اجرا مي كنه نوتهاش رو نوشتن. انتشارات ماهور چند تا از اين مجموعه رو بصورت تصويري منتشر كرده يه بخشهايي از اين هم توي سايت يو تيوب موجوده. به نظرم فيلم سخنرانيها خيلي بهتر از كتابه.

This is a great book for young people to develop an appreciation for classical music. It is also a great resource for music teachers to find great examples of various music concepts, such as the development of a theme. Bernstein's voice is charming and fun, perfect for kids. He incorporates various styles of music including rock and pop songs. It is very well rounded and comprehensive!

Read this if you're a musician. As much of it as possible. Or re-read the same essay over and over!
A wonderfully written and thought-provoking collection of lectures. The illustrations are wonderful. I give Bernstein a lot of credit for changing the way that I appreciate music. I expect to come back to this book in the future, either to re-read or to find something new.

So fun to listen to the mini records while reading along. However I can't say that I learned as much as I thought I would from the maestro.
