A tour de force of a book. Without useless extraneous facts, Mr. Brandt chronicles the travails of being black in America, then drills down to New York during the war. By balancing the successes of blacks with the enormous neglect, segregation, insults and obstacles the book describes perfectly the anger and outrage that blacks have against the overarching white machinations which are clearly described and outlined. This is a decently written book on what American blacks faced in World War Two and the social unrest that resulted from it. Recommended social history reading for any student of American history.
