In an effort to escape tail-chasing males--namely her ex-husband Bob and boyfriend Sam--Melanie Travis opts to track down the elusive owner of Dox, an adorable Dachshund who's about to be put on the block at a charity auction. But the more Melanie discovers about the pup's background, the messier the case gets. It seems Dox is part of a divorced couple's emotional tug-o-wa ...more

Not having ever shown a dog in a dog show and not having ever attended a dog show I found all the discussion of dog shows to be kind of boring and there were a lot of dogs and dog shows were the setting in this novel. Fortunately there was more too, so the time I spent reading it was not a total loss. Melanie Travis is getting spooked when she realizes that she has a stalker and does not know who it is. She is not only being stalked, but she is having petty crimes perpetrated against her. Her wa ...more

Another Championship Read

This cozy series follows Melanie Travis, her son Davey, assorted friends and relatives, and Melanie's standard poodles. Books can be read individually or in order. As a standard poodle owner myself, the dogs are what started me on this series. However, it is the cogent writing, the always intriguing mysteries, and most importantly the character development and relationships that make this series so special. While many cozy series involve a lot of fluff writing and or sim

This book was a bit short on mystery but at this point I'm hooked enough on Melanie and Davey and the rest that I didn't mind. It was kind of a nice change to read a mystery where no one dies!

Enjoyable quick candy read. The plot is not your typical cozy mystery.

good romp for a cozy mystery I have enjoyed learning about dogs, and the dog show mentality

I've read other books in this series and while I found the plot to be lacking in high drama, I remembered the characters and that the book was consistent with the author's writing. Melanie Travis, substitute teacher/single mom/poodle handler/magnet for trouble?, finds herself in possession of a dachshund puppy who was donated to a charity auction held by her uncle, Peter, but his origins are questionable. When Peter's wife, Rose, confesses their lack of canine expertise, Melanie agrees to hold o ...more

In Berenson’s mystery novel, in an effort to put some space between herself and the men in her life, Melanie Travis takes on the responsibility of tracking down the owner of Dox, an adorable Dachshund who’s about to be sold at a charity auction. The more Melanie delves into the dog’s history, the more she discovers that Dox is actually a pawn in a divorced couple’s emotional tug-of-war.

As if navigating the marital woes of others isn’t stressful enough, Melanie has picked up some stalkers—a pesky

This is the only one of the "Melanie Travis Canine Mystery" books I have read. Maybe I would have enjoyed it more if I had read others.

In this book, Melanie (& others) are show-dog people. Her aunt/uncle have received a donation of a dachshund puppy to be auctioned for charity. Melanie & her aunt are appalled that anyone would do this to a puppy and so are on a quest to find out who donated the dog & why.

At the same time, strange & frightening occurrences are happening to Melanie

Since I don't normally write reviews unless I have something specific to say, here's the break down of how I rate my books...

1 star... This book was bad, so bad I may have given up and skipped to the end. I will avoid this author like the plague in the future.

2 stars... This book was not very good, and I won't be reading any more from the author.

3 stars... This book was ok, but I won't go out of my way to read more, But if I find another book by the author for under a dollar I'd pick it up.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It was really interesting to learn about how show dogs are prepped for judging. However, I did find the character of Melanie quite surprising considering she had a young son and was being stalked that she didn't involve the police but had sense enough to have her ex-hubby take care of him. The story would have been more interesting if she had involved her aunts in what was going on, at least her Aunt Peg told her a few things she should be doing when her niece ...more

Dog show owner and teacher Melanie Travis is taking care of a dachshund puppy and trying to figure out who is stalking her. There's the noisy reporter following her for The Next Big Story since Melanie is known for solving murder cases. But when someone breaks into her house and the dog is stolen, Melanie knows there's something more going on. I really like this cozy mystery series. There's a whole of dogs shows so if dogs aren't your thing you may want to skip it. I also enjoy following Melanie ...more

A great book to read.

Had a good time reading this. Only took me a few days. It was great and I had a few laughs and a few cry 's and some excitement. Way to go Laurien.

First time read of this author. It was different and funny but I would class it as a light read. It is not heavy duty mystery but it does keep you guessing.

Not one of the stronger entries in this series. Very weak mystery. Supporting cast all needs to be punched in the nose.

Good light reading with this series. The second in the series that I've read. Kind of along the lines of Janet Evanovich and Sue Grafton, not quite up to their league, but good to read.
