Truly a step by step guide, first few pages are pictures of gardens, the rest is how to build the ideas presented. Not much for inspiration, but great reference.

Excellent instructions for Japanese garden elements, including basic techniques for creating bamboo fences, designing the garden, and understanding tsuboniwa (creating a garden/"courtyard planted with..."), from the history of the Japanese garden to the final product. Any backyard or section of a backyard can be elevated into a "zen garden" for a special, peaceful place to reflect (or have tea!) with these exceptional step-by-step methods. The directions are clear and the photos depict "how to" very well. This is the definitive Japanese garden book!
