I read this book as an assignment but was pleasantly surprised by its happy ending.
While reading I was annoyed with some characters but entertained by the misadventures recounted, quite funny and described concisely.
This is not what I expected from a book written during the enlightenment age but Goldoni does a great job illustrating the different characters' incidents with a simple vocabulary.
Having finished reading I'm happy I did so, all is well what ends well.

Oh I loved this one. It was so sweet, funny, and cozy - I can even imagine a community like this existing in this very moment, just with other problems. I just loved the athmosphere of it. I adored the characters. I couldn't even hate the less nice characters, because they were so real and so silly. Ridolfo was a great character, the not too pretentious and flashy coffee shop owner, who may not know as much as others, but from what he knows, he makes great assumptions, and also, in the backgroun ...more

neat, and really rather funny (no doubt outrageously back then). characters a great blend of traditional stock and individuality, in a plot driven by lust, money and marital indignation. good sharp translation.

Carlo Osvaldo Goldoni was an Italian playwright and librettist from the Republic of Venice. His works include some of Italy's most famous and best-loved plays. Audiences have admired the plays of Goldoni for their ingenious mix of wit and honesty. His plays offered his contemporaries images of themselves, often dramatizing the lives, values, and conflicts of the emerging middle classes. Though he ...more
