FINAL REVIEW: Some books really are life-changing. Searching for and Maintaining Peace is one of them. There really aren’t enough accolades I can give this book. If you happen to already be a calm peaceful person who takes whatever happens to you in stride, you may never need this book. As for me, I am still working toward that with the help of God’s Grace and this book. I have found it to be invaluable in that endeavor and have recommended it to many and given it away as a gift more than any ot ...more

It is really interesting to see how God works. I have been a Catholic actively trying to live my faith for more than two decades. This book has helped me more profoundly than any book I've read in the last ten years.

What is a mystery to me is why the message of this book has not sunk into me sooner than it did. It is not as though it is presenting something that is new or alien to the Gospel. But it must have taken all this time for me to get to a point where I could hear and receive it.

One thing that I like about this book is its constant reference to the Bible. It reminds us again of the spiritual warfare that is ours and which battles to choose and which battles are placed in our way by the devil to drain our resources and sap our energy and divert us from the main battle that the Lord promises us certain victory in. We have to fight on the real battlefield and by God's grace we are certain of victory.

The first goal of spiritual combat is not to always obtain a victory (over

Some books are truly life-changing! This is one of them. If you are trying to look for real peace, then this book is definitely for you! It shows us how to find peace when we are hurt, suffering, anxious, unhappy, unpleased, or annoyed by others. Jacques Philippe shows us what true peace is and how we can maintain it in the midst of difficulties! I learned a lot from this book and am so grateful that I have read it! You will be satisfied with this book! ...more

This book was a gift from a friend at a time when I really needed to read it. It is a collection of insights on faith that I think any Catholic would enjoy. It's Biblical references led me to want to read more and study my faith more in depth. Very happy I read this book at this time. ...more

I recommend this without hesitation. It was simple, lovely, insightful. I'm going to return to this one in a few years. It is a remarkable thing when a book can bring insight and hope into the daily human experience.

One of the best spiritual books I've ever read, if not THE best. I highlighted something on every page. I will keep this to read again. I can't recommend it enough. What a gift to have this book during this time, sure to remain one of the best spiritual classics ever. Loved it!! ...more

If this book sticks with me for a while, I'll come back and give it five stars. I took my time with it, as it's only 110 pages. This book presumes a solid foundation of Christian Faith, which is probably why it's so short. Books on achieving inner peace can probably fill whole libraries, and as long as they keep ignoring the truths in this skinny little book (and they will), there will always be more. The proposition is simple, Christ came to give us peace. The catch is that Christ can't do much ...more

I want to buy this book for everyone I know. Beautifully profound yet simple. Love love!

Just re-read yet again. So much beauty here I highlighted practically the entire book. Interior peace has much to do with humility, trust in God, and abandonment. We should strive to have a confidence in God that, despite what difficulties come, knows God can and will bring good out of our trials. 💙

Wow, this was a perfect read. By far, my favorite religious book I have ever read. It was eye opening. It was peacefully convicting, which was a beautiful experience since I am used to the shaming conviction strategies that never do any good. Even for being a hundred and ten pages, it gave me so much practical and very needed infromation. It was such an intelligent read, which I found refreshing. It was one of those books that if I highlighted, almost the entirety of the book would have been yel ...more

A wonderful little book on how to maintain peace in your spiritual life in the midst of trials and stresses. A very quick read too, which is helpful. Very highly recommended for Catholics (probably other Christians too, though some might have theological differences with Fr. Philippe.

I really enjoyed the way Father Philippe explains his ideas in this short but powerful book. There were lots of great insights in this book about the things that disturb our peace and how to keep them at bay. Philippe makes great use of scripture in each section and he challenges his readers to relinquish control and rely more heavily on God - a tall order, but one which feels possible after reading Philippe's words. I read this book as part of a Lenten book study with the Abiding Together podca ...more

I have learned so much from this book. Fr Jacques Philippe touches on a profound evangelical wisdom about peace of soul. It has to do with an unshakeable trust in God and profound humility that allows you not to be disturbed by anything. I want to read this book again and again.

So so good. I may just turn around and read it again. At a little over 100 pages, Father Philippe packs a lot of punch. Each section is under 2 pages so you can take it slowly and meditate on each one, or read several a day. I would consider this book a beautiful "pep talk" on allowing the Lord's peace to resonate and take hold. It certainly isn't an overnight fix for contrary habits, but will set anyone looking again to Christ for fulfillment, and give hope and guidance to someone struggling.

For me, the constant noise of this world, noisy clamoring voices, a thousand opinions on everything and everyone, of course, is "right," busy-ness, programs, and then the disappointments we feel about ourselves and others and the sorrows in our own and others' lives, all of which we know about because we're so plugged in to the whole world - it all makes an interior peace nearly impossible to keep. This little book has such a brilliant perspective and though I've just finished it, I'm going to r ...more

One of my all-time favorites: it may be the only book I choose to read every year. Excellent spiritual read on the common temptation to allow our souls to become anxious and disturbed, when in fact, we are asked to remain in Christ's Peace, where God can do His work within our hearts. Would recommend to people of all or no faith (though keep in mind this book is written with and for a Catholic Christian context). ...more

Jacques Philippe was born into a Christian family on March 12, 1947 in Lorraine, France. After studying mathematics in college, he spent several years teaching and doing scientific research. In 1976, he met the then recently-founded Community of the Beatitudes and answered the Lord’s call to follow Him through this vocation (see below for more information on the Community of the Beatitudes).
