Join Ashlynn Ella, daughter of Cinderella, as her woodland friends help her get ready for her Legacy Year at school, where she will train for her destiny to marry a prince. But what if she meets the woodsman of her dreams instead? Read all about it in this exclusive Ever After High short story by Newbery Honor author Shannon Hale.
Shannon Hale is the New York Times best-selling author of six young adult novels: the Newbery Honor book Princess Academy, multiple award winner Book of a Thousand Days, and the highly acclaimed Books of Bayern series. She has written three books for adults, including the upcoming Midnight in Austenland (Jan. 2012), companion book to Austenland. She co-wrote the hit graphic novel Rapunzel's Revenge and its sequel Calamity Jack with husband Dean Hale. They live near Salt Lake City, Utah with their four small children, and their pet, a small, plastic pig.
This was a 5 page little story to explain some about Ashlynn Ella. I have issues with the main theme of these stories. Let me explain. So there are several character's who will all be attending Ever After High. All of these characters are daughters, or sons of characters from well known fairy tales. So this particular 5 page book was about Ashlynn the daughter of Cinderella. So Ashlynn will one day live her mother's fairytale. Her mother Cinderella will meet an untimely demise and her father will remarry and so forth into the same story that we all know well. But my problem is who wants to live a life like that. Who wants to have everything dictated or foretold for them. What does poor Cinderella think about this knowing that soon she will die just so her daughter can live this fairytale again. So that is the premise for each of these stories. That I am assuming will be a main point is these characters will discover they don't want to live these stories over again. But I guess we will wait and see.
In this little chapter about how Ashlynn Ella lives her life we also learn about some of the special gifts she has that are only touched on a little bit in the Ever After High books. She can talk to animals, and they can talk to her, so she is a vegan. It is explained and not pushed in our faces that she is. If she is late anywhere her clothes change into rags. This is a little silly, and I’m not sure if they will eventually turn back, but honestly this is a silly little series so I’ll allow it haha. This little short brings up the question-if Cinderella’s mother died in the original story, and her father also dies after marrying a terrible woman with terrible daughters, how does Ashlynn feel about her fate? She has lived her whole life knowing that she will take up her mother’s story, and her story starts off very dark. She also mentions briefly what happened to Cinderella’s stepsisters, though I forget how Hale handled it, I do know that in the original story their fates were not happy ones at all.
This is the third of 6 short stories that are a new take on an old fairy tale. Great intro into what I am sure will be just as great a series. As I read each story it makes me want to read the series that much more. Would recommend them for the any age who likes a happy ever after type story or at least the beginning of one.
I don't know if my son was extra tired or if we have not watched Cinderella enough, but this book brought on many questions. I love the fact that she refers to her aunt as "Auntie Step". It is a good thing that her mother's step sister is visiting because it will give her good practice for the day that Cinderella dies and Ashlynn has to have her own wicked step sisters. This series is just hilarious. I love every single book. Then again I love every episode that I have ever seen. Whomever came up with this idea needs congratulated.
I'm not a fan of female characters in fairy tales who await princes and destinies to change their lives like Cinderella (and apparently her daughter Ashlynn).
I like those who shape their own lives, being the strong women they are and not relying on a "Prince Charming" to have their Happily-Ever-After. And if a guy was encountered in their journey; well, a bit of romance hurts no body.
This is what I mostly hated about this girl.
Story line is not bad. It's a bit funny.
Quote: "After all, one day Ashlynn would have her own unkind stepsisters to put up with in the story"
Read Ashlynn Ella´s story. Except for her passion for shoes of all kind there is no sign that Ashlyn is a royal princess. She works from dawn till dusk doing chores, working in a shoe shop & helping animals. She can understand what animals say, doesn´t care what clothes she wears (only what shoes ^-^)and she´s vegan. She also rather wants to marry a boy with a golden heart, not with golden looks. Thumbs up, sis!

“ Ashlynn knew she shouldn’t be looking at lumberjack calendars any more than she should be making friends with birdhouse-making guys. As the next Cinderella, she would have to marry whichever fairytale prince ended up in her story. But she couldn’t help making a small, secret wish that her assigned prince might be the kind who would grab her hand and run off into the woods—build a tree house with her or lie back and watch the stars come out through the canopy. The kind of person who would make a birdhouse for a family of robins. She didn’t care about a fancy palace and loads of dresses. Just a cozy cottage somewhere—perhaps with an attached two-story, fully stocked shoe shed. And a guy with dirt under his fingernails and goodness in his heart. ”
Interestingly, this book offers a few more details than Apple White's own. Although by itself, it is not something impressive. It's a light and enjoyable read to some extent. The touch that Ashlynn is a hippie with a special connection to nature I find it very good. It is noticeable that it was written with less laziness than that of the Briar Beauty's Story. It's a decent introduction as far as it goes.
However, the detail of the Ecologist Lumberjack Calendar was a rather curious thing. In fact, it's even funny and a little embarrassing. Especially when she goes into describing that. Wow, it's not something you'd expect from a series of this type. It made me laugh and cry for cringe.
Up until now I've felt kinda ridiculous for my unexplainable need to read the entire series of Ever After High books, a children's book series based on a children's tv show primarily meant to sell dolls to children, but there is shame no more. This story, in all its 12 glorious pages, had the best thing ever.
Ashlynn Ella has, hidden under her bed, a calendar of hot (fully clothed, this is still for kids) lumberjacks.
“Oh dear! I’ll come help, of course,” Ashlynn replied. Those bunnies. Always so much drama!” I would lay my life down on the line for you, Ashlynn.
“She didn’t care about a fancy palace and loads of dresses. Just a cozy cottage somewhere—perhaps with an attached two-story, fully stocked shoe shed. And a guy with dirt under his fingernails and goodness in his heart.” I love how it seems like she’s materialistic but deep down she just wants happiness.
Another cute story. This one was an introduction to Cinderella's daughter, who also happens to be the next in line to be Cinderella. I'm not sure why history has to repeat itself there, but in the story, that is Ashlynn Ella's destiny. It didn't really tell us anything else, except she is going away to school. Short but sweet, I look forward to the next one.

Fantasy: Ashlynn Ella, daughter of Cinderella is going through her day before leaving for boarding school. She keeps getting distracted by her animal friends and even realizes that their is a mysterious boy in the woods. She also expresses that she does not want to marry a prince like her mother did.
It was good but it was so short. I like how she is trying to keep the tradition of marriage going but she just can't help but to find out who's that nice boy that made the birdhouse.
