This was a really good book. Kevin Zahn is a graduate of the US Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point. His story details how he, as a student cadet, sailed during a summer recess on two different ships. One a cargo ship to Viet Nam (during the war) and one ratty old tanker.

Circumstances interfered with my quest for adventure and to see the world in the Merchant Marine. I attended a Maritime Academy at about the same time as Kevin Zahn, the author of The Bucko Mate. Unlike Kevin, I didn’t graduate so I thoroughly enjoyed reading what my life might have been like.

His fast paced, no nonsense, look at commercial shipping was a real eye opener. Maybe it’s just as well I wasn’t there to witness the romance ebbing out of the career I dreamt about as a kid.

A memoir of a profession and way of life that's all but dead. Reads well and is a good yarn but gets slightly repetitive after several chapters, reminiscent of the wide oceans upon which the author sailed. The author pulls no punches in both his self description or his travels, making for an interesting read.

Having spent seven years at sea in the Merchant Marine myself, I can say Kevin Zane paints a true picture of what life was like back in the day.
