A guide to vampirism. The nightmare of the dead rising to suck the blood of the living has haunted us since prehistory. Legends, literature and case histories trace vampires from antiquity to gaslit London. Today they are kept alive through fiction and the cinema.

It's been a lot of years since I read this little book all the way through. But as a starter introduction to the subject, it is very good, covering most aspects, starting in the ancient and to the middle ages with the folklore and superstition (with nods to some of the infamous historical characters who were then inspiration for later fictional depictions), up through to Victorian gothic literature, art and eventually film portrayals.

A good pocket book for finding the most important historical events of the subject. Doesn't have much extra information but doesn't need it, either. It just introduces the main topics.
