September 30, 2022This children's chapter book is about a Boy named Dick and his sister Jane. Dick and Jane are playing around the house, while playing Jane has her teddy bear Tim ride the railing down the stairs. At the bottom of the stairs is their dog Spot that catches Tim and Tim rides Spot. In the next chapter jane is having a tea party with Puff, Tim and another girl named Sally. After that, Sally and Jane are playing with building blocks and Spot barges through the girl's buildings. In Chapter 5 Sally, Jane and Dick are playing in the sand. They all say they can make houses. Jane makes a house for Tim and they all think he looks funny in the house. Then their houses all got ruined, because Puff and Spot were playing in the sand and trampled the sand houses. In chapter 6 Jane and Dick go away with mom, dad, Sally, and Tim. Sally notices Puff and Spot are not with them, but Dick notices something funny while they are stopped at a stop sign. It's Spot! They let spot in the car and away they go.

This book is about Sally and Tim. Tim is Sally's teddy bear. They are playing in the house and they do everything together. They drink from the water fountain and they build a house out of blocks. They are best friends. In the end they see a boat and a plane and they want them both.

This is a good book to teach some beginner reader. It is very repetitive, so they can learn to recognize the words. However, it is quite random and oddly worded at times.

Boy, did this bring back memories of learning to read with Dick and Jane when I was 6 years old. My granddaughter who's 7 read the whole book with me, and it was fun. She felt good and had reading success. I thought sometimes the old ways are good ways especially with those beginning readers.

Notes:
these are the best early readers available
repetitive vocabulary with family-based 'stories'
beautiful illustrations
(maybe not a 5 star book but in this category these books shine!)

August 28, 2018This book would be great for a beginning reader as it features fun stories about the adventures of two young children and the places that they go. From a literary standpoint, this book does a great job introducing prepositional phrases such as "in", "out", "away", "up", "down", among many others. Repetition is a common theme throughout the book, which would be helpful to a young reader as they begin to develop their vocabulary and recognize patterns while they are reading. Additionally, this book uses simple phrases along with illustrations to tell short stories. I would use this book in the classroom with readers who are just beginning to read independently.
