Stedman's medical dictionary for the health professions and nursing. (2012).
Citation By: Kristie Hofelich Ennis
Type of Resource: Dictionary
Call Number: R121 .S8 2012
Content/Scope: This particular dictionary contains medical terminology used in over 30 health professions. There are 2439 pages with tabs and illustrations throughout. Online can be purchased annually, and one free year is included with a newly purchased edition, but it is as expensive as the book itself. The updates are also included with yearly renewal, however, which would be nice for the most up-to-date information.
Accuracy/Authority/Bias: Stedman's has been publishing medical dictionaries for over 100 years. Now under Lippincott Williams & Wilkins Publishing, the dictionary is thoroughly reviewed and updated by a team of 46 medical professionals.
Arrangement & Presentation: The 100,000+ entries in the dictionary are alphabetically organized with helpful tabs for each letter. The book includes 1,000 images and photographs, a glossy insert with detailed images by Anatomical Chart Company, and 68 appendices.
Relation to Similar Works: While there are a few versions of medical terminology textbooks in the medical classrooms, students often need a more up-to-date reference for other courses as well. All students in the medical program at the high school must complete a course in medical terminology, so this would be an excellent resource to have in the reference section.
Accessibility/Diversity: Students who are visual learners will revel in this text; even though dictionaries are all organized in the same way, this one includes full-color illustrations and diagrams that will make concepts and terminology more accessible to all.
