One of the most sensational crimes of the twentieth century took place when two wealthy young men decided to commit the perfect crime. Travel back in time to learn of how they planned their dastardly deed. From the carefully laid out plans for ransom and the brutal murder of a young boy, these two young men chose path which weaved through the Cook County courtroom with America's most famous attorney who slipped them off the hangman's gallows into prison for life. With all the details of today's modern documentaries the very words of the killers themselves will spellbind the reader and have all parents noting the whereabouts of their children. Danger lurks at all times, often from those who know your child. This true crime story is as relevant today as it was to the family of young Bobby Franks in 1924 when he was murdered by the depravity of Richard Loeb and Nathan Leopold.
Richard Loeb and Nathan Leopold grew up together. Both highly intelligent and both very dangerous.
They set out one day to commit an intentional murder. It is very hard to understand this much evil. Loeb and Leopold made so many plans in order to pull this murder off.
The police and the District Attorney when questioning the two got direct answers as Loeb confessed to his part.
Leopold also just answered questions with no responses that showed any feelings about what they had done at all.
The facts of this case are so stark and chilling. These men did not care what happened to their small kidnapping victim.
Even when being questioned there was no remorse. They believed they were too intelligent to get caught. They believed they had the perfect crime planned out.
Since they were only murderers were only 18 and 19 years old they were treated differently in sentencing. Ken Rossignol and Bruce Caplan did a great job with the research and brought this story to light.
There was a child, a trusting child that was murdered and they never showed any compassion for that little boy.
I am glad I read this book, because I never would have believed it to be true if I had not.
This was an Audible AudioBook and it was well represented. The narrator Stan Jenson was impressive. The characters were clearly different in their speech patterns. He had a clear concise narration voice and the voices were well defined.
True story in 1924, in Cook County two young, wealthy, Boys both from millionaire families, well educated with high above average IQ' s, ages 18 and 19 planned and carried out the murder of Bobby Franks just to commit the perfect crime. These two boys were caught, the police found a pair of glasses as evidence and traced them back to the owner Richard Loeb.
Both boys pleaded guilty and voluntary confessed to the crime, the police had them in different rooms and each described the events in vivid details, there were no blood scenes, mainly details of how it was all planned. The court gave legal punishment to both boys for kidnapping and murder. This crime was a single case, planned and carried out over a period of time. The Judge stated 'No Parole'.
The author Ken Rollsignol and Bruce M. Caplan are the author's, Ken Rollsignol sent me a copy of the audio of this book. This is an excellent story. also the audio is fantastic. I have read several of Ken's books which were true stories and very well written, this one is a must read, I only just touched on the events. Another book by Ken Rossignol is 'Titanic 1912' it is full of true newspaper stories, facts and true events about the people.
On viewing the film Rope directed by Alfred Hitchcock I was curious about the real event that inspired the film. Police discovery of the killers must have been amazing given the small number of clues they had. Was indeed interesting extreme result of the superhuman concept. I think that the degree of introspection and lack of emotion by Leopold in particular shows something of an autistic dysfunction . Book smart but life dumb. Writing style by authors I found to be repetitious.
