Rate this book
This “Poppy” activity guide is set up so it can be used as a unit plan for the teacher, or used by students in literature circles. It is broken up into a 17 day plan, and includes chapter questions, vocabulary, writing prompts, reading comprehension questions, and projects. Students will love using this as a guide to use with the great book written by Avi, and it would be an excellent resource for a home schooler reading this book!

This is definitely a juvenile book, but fun to read. I came across it by happy accident.
A large family of deer mice live in Gray House. Their 'protector' is a great horned owl named Mr. Ocax and he sets their range and demands they ask permission to do anything else. Little Poppy runs afoul of him and is a target of revenge.
The family has outgrown Gray House and needs to move to someplace with more food. Poppy sets out to check out New House both to find out why Mr. Ocax is disturbed by its mention and why he forbids them moving there. The result is eye opening for her.
The book is a fun, fast, easy one to read. The creatures may talk, but are what they are, not humans in animal form.

This was a “read aloud with the family” book assigned to the kids from school. And it read like one too. I don’t mean to sound snobby, but all this successfully did was make me want to go read Redwall again.

I read this book in middle school and decided at 30 years old I would reread it just for fun. I can honestly say in school I HATED to read. We always had summer reading to do and I preferred the cliffnotes version to actually taking away from my summer by reading. Things have definitely changed for the better, since now I can't hardly wait to curl up with a book. I think this book was short and to the point but overall a great read. It had moments that were funny and moments that make you hang on to the edge of your seat. My favorite character of course was Ereth! If you are looking for a light read this is one I recommend. I didn't find out until after I read the book that it is part of a series so if you really enjoy it, then luckily enough there is more to the story!

Read with my second grade class along with our reading program. It was a story full of adventure and deep meanings that my students begged me to keep reading. I wouldn’t recommend it typically for second graders without heavy help from an adult, but the lessons learned are wonderful. It teaches to ask questions of authority and to not trust what everyone tells you in a kid friendly way.

This "food chain" and survival story presents the trajectory of Poppy and finding out Mr. Ocax's secret! The vivid language makes this adventure very exciting! Well done Avi!

I like this book so much because it is about a lot of fun adventures and risks that happen in the forest because the owl is really mean that killed ragweed. Ragweed was poppy's boyfriend who was eaten by Mr. Ocax the owl.
