although somewhat unsatisfying, the last chapters of this story are so realistic yet bittersweet. this manga is a beautiful story of friendship and music and i would read it over and over if i could.

Sakamichi no Apollon

*
Có khi bây giờ câu chuyện vẫn còn đang diễn ra ở đâu đó ấy chứ.

I only review books when they are among the best things i have ever read or the worst. I don't waste my time on mediocrity and guess which category Kids on the Slope falls in.

There are many names in anime that are instantly Hayao Miyazaki, Satoshi Kon, Makato Shinkai. Each of them has really taken animation to new heights, and if i had to choose a favorite among the legendary anime directors. Those 3 can suck it cause Shinchiro Watanabe curb stomps all 3 of them, he directed Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo and Space Dandy. 3 vastly different shows each done with distinct tones and animation. I despise Japanese anime fans for not taking him seriously. Miyazaki, Kon and Makato are all masters but none of them know how to make something cool. What do i mean by that..His Masterpiece Cowboy Bebop was a Jazz fueled bounty hunting character study of 4 complex and lovable characters with the greatest soundtrack i have ever heard. His second piece Samurai Champloo was a hip hop samurai fusion that had a break dancing samurai with art that makes Miyazaki's work look tame, and Space Dandy was a sci fi ronchy comedy. The style of these three shows put the rest of shows airing on adult swim to shame. And all his shows are better in English, because of the distinctly western musical influence…as well as the fact that the Japanese aired his masterpiece Cowboy Bebop for 7 episodes while we are still airing the English version show after a decade and a half and it’s popularity is only rising.
If you were to ask me what his best anime was I would immediately say Kids on the Slope. Simply put it was a coming of age story about music. It does what La La Land and Whiplash tried to do but in a way that makes the music a character. Kids on the slope is in a suit ray bans in a jazz club while smoking cigars and watching Charlie Parker perform cool.

So when I saw there was a manga for it, I don’t read much manga but of course I would read this. And man I read all 10 volumes in 1 day. So the question is does Yuki Kodama capture in still art what Satoshi Kon and the magnificent composer Yoko Kano (who did the soundtrack for bebop) did with images and sounds. No…it captures something more that I glanced over in the anime. It gives depth to the characters, because you can contemplate decisions and reflect on them rather than skipping over things. Things that I hated in the Anime, I absolutely loved in the manga like my man Brother June’s arc. I have all the songs used on Kids on the Slope memorized and they just got stuck in my head. I listened to Moanin by the Jazz Messengers no less than 40 times during my read through. That bloody tune is intoxicating and the manga is just a visual representation of jazz. It’s still playing through my head and will continue to do so for years to come. My problem with whiplash was that it never captured the spirit of freedom and rich history of jazz, all they did was bitch about how well that dipshit could play the drums. It never took a look at itself because if it did, Meechum had taken the swing out of Don Ellis’ classic tune and turned it from a free flowing piece to an uptight classical composition.

Kids on the slope is the opposite, there is no pretentious rhetoric, it’s a bunch of kids expressing themselves….that’s more jazz than some bloody asshole who can play a double time 7/6 swing. The appreciation for the cultural history and significance of this genre, is payed it’s due respect and you should definetly watch the anime and read the manga. The series as a whole gets a perfect score of 10/10. I would put it up there with Gin Tama, One Punch Man and Berserk as one of the greatest manga ever written.

Here we have an unusual volume that takes place after school and which covers a lot of time in relatively few pages, with some characters blinking in and out of the narrative pretty swiftly. Still, the glimpses of the student riots, the progression of Kaoru's studies, and the heart-aching long-distance romance with Rikko are pretty engaging.

The eventual rediscovery of Sen and what he has been up to is surprising and... kind of cool. The fact that he became a priest is perhaps not extremely surprising, given his past--and he makes a pretty funny/cool priest! I like that the series treats the Christian/Catholic faith with some degree of respect, which can be kind of rare in manga.

Though I sort of wish the manga would have dealt more with why he so completely cut ties with his friends. When they finally track him down, he doesn't try to hide from them and is really happy to see them and he seems as happy-go-lucky as ever.

Kaoru and Rikko also get a chance to rekindle their relationship at the end. For some reason, I had this vague memory that Rikko had gotten married from watching the anime, but I must have just misunderstood the dialogue.

Just the "bonus track" manga now!

Not that bad if you want a laid-back, casual slice of life story.

The ending was fairly predictable and that's not necessarily the issue here; I think I just expected too much from it and it ended up being a lot simpler than I would've liked

Maravillosa.

I have a lot of favourite manga because I read a lot and I found some unexpectantly good manga every time. I'm glad I re-read this series. It's refreshing and introduced me to Jazz! A manga about jazz that set in the 60s, isn't that sound promising! It might be slow-burning at some point, but it brewed the best friendship and relationship for manga series. The passion towards music, the relationships that built from music and the importance of following our dreams were shown throughout the series. Serious topics like the hardship and consequences of war were brought up too. Each character have their own moments to shine and I love all of them, especially Sen. He is not flawless, but his innocence really touched me. Kaoru was not bad too, I grew to love him and tots ship him with Ritsuko! I like the ending, reunited with Sen was the best feeling ever! I would like to have a closure of what will happen next, and there's volume 10! Hoot hoot! Overall, it was a 4.5 star series, I highly recommend it to anyone!

Binge read this whole thing in about 3 hours and i really didnt expect myself to get so attached, im not sure if it’s because i havent read manga like this in a while but wow. Im so sad. I loved watching them grow. And the music. Everything was just so perfect in my eyes. I do think it was a tad bit messy at times but godhhh. Im so sad. It was so beautiful. Growing up is so scary. Seeing the piano and drums covered up made me so sad. I cant wait to watch the anime and live action. Definitely a new favorite.

i cried so hard.

for me this is probably one of the best slice of life manga ever. first off, i'm a sucker for stories where characters grow and then they're adults and they face decisions, and this was pretty much it. also the end couldn't have been more perfect, everything kind of fitted and not. also the ost of the anime, that i will not watch because the animation sucks, is AMAZING.
