Esposito Mysteries #5

Season for Murder

Rate this book
When a woman is poisoned to death at a Christmas bake sale that Vinnie’s mother organized, suspicion turns to Mrs. Esposito.

Vinnie is not about to stand by and let her mother get framed for murder, no matter that Vinnie’s dad forbids them from sneaking around. Her boyfriend, sexy State Trooper Marcus Richmond is worried about Vinnie’s safety, not to mention any laws she might be breaking. Her friend and upstairs tenant, FBI Agent Aaron Grant is off on a secret mission, so at least he’s not around to yell at her.

Vinnie is determined to find out who is behind this evil act . . . and why. The trouble is, Vinnie gets her tenaciousness from her mother, and when the two of them start snooping, danger follows.

But nobody messes with the Esposito family.

Not even a cold-blooded killer.

The best yet. I am still a little confused about the set up to trap the bad buy, but I think that is just me. I like Marcus, but I think Aaron is a better match for Vinnie. Of course that my be one of the reasons she doesn't get too involved with him.

When a death at a retirement home results from back goods at a bake sale set up by Vinnie's mother and takes place right in front of both of them, even Vinnie's dad wants her to investigate. She would feel okay about it if her mother would just stay out of it. Maybe she can understand a little bit about why everyone worries about her, but if her mother gets caught in the wrong place, Vin isn't sure she has enough favors to call in to keep her mother out of jail. And what is with her temporary renter? Every time she turns around he is there asking questions.

Good use of the holiday setting.

Very excited to continue and read book 5 in this series about Vinnie Esposito an Italian Rhode Islander who teaches Criminal Justice to the police in this state. She has a lot of friends on the force. Her family grew up very close the mob and her family is more connected than she knows. She has many mishaps and always in danger. The two men in her life are always trying to protect her- Marcus the State Trooper and Aaron the FBI agent renting her apartment. This book threw in a new character Rafael who I didn't really like right from the start. This character is similar to Stephanie Plum by Janet Evanovich which is probably why I enjoyed these 5 books so much. I am sad that I have finished the series and I hope JM Griffin is going to keep writing more about Vinnie.

#5 in the Esposito Series
Vinnie is as the senior center with her mother when one of the other ladies eats some fruitcake and dies suddenly.
It turns out to have been poisoned.
Vinnie's mother becomes a suspect. (But I thought this was a very unlikely suspect)
Then another senior lady is found dead in the bushes.

I really enjoy the Vinnie Esposito series. They are fast-paced and have interesting plots. The story has it all: elements of multiple romantic interests with law enforcement, dangerous escapades, hints of mob connections, loyal friends and family, and the belief that food is the answer for everything. You can't get any more Italian than Vinnie Esposito.

As I said, I love the series and the characters. I only have a couple of hesitations. By the fifth book I find Vinnie's occupation as a criminal justice instructor for law enforcement personnel in stark contrast with her constant lying (albeit by omission), her criminal behavior, and her constant head-chatter about becoming involved with a cop. On the flip side, if the aforementioned things were changed, the story and the funny, daring, and curious attributes that make Vinnie, well, Vinnie, the series wouldn't be what it is. Which is a darn entertaining and fun read.

I really enjoy this series and all the craziness that happens in Vinnie's life. I found this book a little hard to get into at first, but once I was into the story I couldn't stop reading. I did find Vinnie to be a little too trusting of the new guy leaving in the apartment above her especially for someone who is in criminal justice. I was also really hoping that Marcus and Vinnie would commit to each other already. Overall, another great book in the series!

I love Vinnie, sometimes I wished the books were longer. I can't seem to put it down when I start, and finish them quickly. Ready for her next adventure.
