About the author

William Henry "Bill" Mauldin was a two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist from the United States. He was most famous for his World War II cartoons depicting American soldiers, as represented by the archetypal characters Willie and Joe. These cartoons were broadly published and distributed in the American army abroad and in the United States.

Political cartoons from 1961-1965, before I was even born. What could be more fun!

I'm glad that each cartoon has a paragraph or more explaining what was going on in the 2 or 3 years between when the cartoons were published and when they were assembled here. Though I know many of the issues, I wasn't aware of, or had forgotten, that there was a time when the USA was paying almost as much attention to the Congo as to Vietnam.

honestly, so happy i found this treasure at a used bookstore. Mauldin was one of USA's greatest political catooninsts and journalist. He one many awards including the Pulitzer. This book covers the early 60s including the Kennedy administration, civil rights, the beginnings of the Vietnam War and so much more. If you ever get a chance to explore his work, take it!

Thank heavens Mr. Mauldin included explanations as most of this I had only vague knowledge of. What the book does underscore, from the perspective of 2022, is that our nation has undergone--and survived--tumultuous times in the not-so-distant-past.

Excellent collection of cartoons spanning the end of Kennedy's presidency and the beginning of Johnson's. References to many, many politicians and crises that range from the obscure to the unknown half a century later make it an excellent jumping-off point for those interested in less popular historical figures.
