description

Great book.

Our protagonist Tyrone Meehan who is based on Denis Donaldson (whom author pesonally knew) narrates his story about his growning up, about how he become member of IRA and how he ultimately become informant for MI5.
It's story of one turbulent period from 60's to 90's from insider perspective but it's also the story about betrayal of childhood ideals and inner struggle that follows. Is he hero or traitor? What of those two is to his people and what to himself?

Writing itself is crisp

It's hard to write a book on the complexities of war and that's what this was, war. The Irish call it The Troubles which I guess is a nice way to make it sound not as bad as it was. To me, this was war. There were bombs and people dying, deprivations, prisons and just plain horror. In other words, war.

Tyrone Meehan was raised in Killybegs, Ireland, and his father was a drunk and the meanest man in town. He beat his children and a donkey. A volunteer in the IRA, the father was consumed by his

Ritorno a Killybegs.

Spara piccole schegge tutto intorno. Con un traditore tutti rimangono feriti. Ed è

Quite an innocuous title for such a powerfully written and emotive story. Tyrone Meehan born and bred in Killybegs to his rise through the ranks of the IRA and his ultimate betrayal on the streets of Belfast.

I don't know a lot about this period in history, Ireland in the 60's through to the 90's, the time of the Hunger Strikes, Bobby Sands up until the Ceasefire This novel does give insight into that fascinating period of history.

I found this a harrowing and disturbing read, the violence and

Return to Killybegs is a mesmerizing story about an IRA warrior who subsequently is labeled a traitor to Belfast's IRA during "The Troubles." The novel provides a poignant, insightful expose of what fighting a guerilla war is really like, as well as the abhorrent conditions IRA soldiers - both men and women - endured in Northern Ireland's prisons.

As an American with Irish parents, I'd heard snippets of conversation in hushed tones while I grew up about the hardships and war-torn strife they and

...more

Do zadku bych nakopala obě strany konfliktu. (A další ukázka toho, jak náboženství kurví životy a mezilidské vztahy a je příčinou násilí.)

I read this book in english, Published by Lilliput Press in Stoneybatter, Dublin 7. This is the book that a really brave Irish author should have written. The story is essential for those of us interested in all the sides of the Troubles. It is a fictional story of an IRA soldier turned informant for the Brittish forces. Although based on a real person, the story is fictional. However, this is a well researched and compasionate rendering of the possibilities and the complexities of this war. I ...more

This is fiction based on the true story of an IRA insider who became an informer for the British Secret Service during the Troubles in Northern Ireland after he was released from internment in Long Kesh. The Long Kesh segment was hard to read because of the horror of the conditions of the Republican (IRA) prisoners during the "blanket protests". Of course, these conditions were self-imposed as the Republican prisoners demanded to be categorized and treated as political prisoners, and refused to ...more

This was a reread for me, the book having recently come to the notice of several GR friends and been chosen as my 'In Person' book club, as well as the story on which it was loosely based, that of the life and murder of Denis Doaldson, returning to the news recently after a BBC documentary on the unsolved murder.

It might seem strange that it is a French novelist who tells the story of Tyrone Meehan, native of Killybegs in Donegal, who moves with his family to North Belfast on the eve of the

Vždyť v Británii by chtěl přeci žít každý. Nechtěl, nechtěl pokud je katolík a bydlí v Belfastu. Například přirovnání k Romům není na místě, protože ty alespoň chrání policie, i když dost nedokonale.
Katolíci, republikáni v Severním Irsku to měli těžké ještě před pár lety.

Příběh, napětí, a hlavně literární styl, způsob vyprávění, přirovnání, a snad i překlad, prostě mi to fakt sedlo.
