Lovers of cats and historical advertising will want to pounce on a copy of this out-of-print gem. Here’s a collection of beautiful color advertisements for the products of yore, all featuring images of felines.

Captions detail the history of the companies whose products are being advertised; as of the book’s printing, many were still in business in one form or another. Sadly, I’m sure that has changed significantly since 1984.

This is "A Collection of Cats Who Sold Yesterday's
Products". Cats always seem to garner a lot of attention from people, so what a better way to draw attention to the product you're selling than to put a cat in it? This occurred primarily between the late 1800's and the 1950's. This is before computers and televisions and video games. Advertisers depended on the printed word; just before the "modern way" of advertising.
Many of the products featuring cats are no longer in business, but many are. One advertisement with a cat (actually a very big cat) that I recognized immediately was the "Chessie" cat, "probably the most famous cat in American advertising history", who first promoted the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway in 1933 in an advertisement in "Fortune" magazine.
The illustrations were wonderful to look at, and very different than what we see today. A great book to read about things you never thought of before.

I feel like I was born in wrong century while I am reading this book. Cats + vintage ads + victorian era is such a perfect combination for me. I have to buy it on Amazon!

this book starts a person on a journey.
i was given this early, and I am still on that journey.
I think of this book a lot, and how the book might be able to judged by the cover.

I picked this book up because the early advertising illustrations of cats are really striking. Turns out this was also a great read about advertising and the information about each of the illustrations in the book. Great retro cat eye candy!
