Inside Seka - The Platinum Princess of Porn

Rate this book
“The Mount Rushmore of Adult Entertainment has four heads: John Holmes, Marilyn Chambers, Jenna Jameson, and Seka. That’s it; there ain’t no more.”
– Bill Margold, famed adult film actor, agent, producer, director, and activist

Seka—The Platinum Princess, the Marilyn Monroe of Porn, the queen of XXX cinema’s Golden Age, and John Holmes’ favorite leading lady. Seka is a legendary performer in the annals of adult cinema, and many would say the greatest. Seka’s name was so big in XXX that her name above the title was not enough—her name had to be in the title!

Seka’s real life story, though, is as enigmatic as her screen persona. She was never a victim—on-screen or off. This is no tale of remorse, abuse, or self-destructive behavior. Seka was post-feminist before the term was born. Inside Seka is the story of a survivor, a trailblazer, and an icon—still one of the most popular and famous porn stars ever; the last of the natural beauties.

“Before the Jennas, the Bree Olsons, or the Savannas, the undisputed blonde bombshell of XXX movies was Seka, which makes her story so important in the history of adult entertainment.”
– Ron Jeremy, porn legend, holder of the Guinness Book of World Records for “Most Appearances in Adult Films”

“From calling the shots in a film genre in the days when it was completely controlled by men, to standing and being heard at the infamous Meese Commission, Seka shatters the myth of the poor little victim who lost her way. Don’t expect excuses and apologies. This is one blonde bombshell who lives by her own rules.”
– Candida Royalle, author, entrepreneur, and erotic film pioneer

“She was one of the hottest girls in the XXX business, able to seduce any man she wanted. So it should come as no surprise that her story is riveting.”
– Larry Flynt, Hustler magazine

Kerry Zukus is the author, co-author, or ghostwriter of over 40 books, including From Harvard to Hell and Back, the upcoming Inside the Hotel Rwanda, and Book of the Month Club Feature Selection The Fourth House.

If the measurement of art has anything to do with the response it elicits, then Dorothea Hundley Patton’s body of work belongs in a museum. Arousal, anger, resentment, jealousy – Inside Seka documents Hundley Patton’s highest pedestals as the Marilyn Monroe of porn’s golden era as much as her unbearable moments of shame and exploitation. Few, it would seem, felt indifferently about Seka, and that’s exactly what makes her autobiography such a compelling read.

Love her or love her not, Hundley Patton’s recurring Seka character had a global impact on the culture of the ’70s and ’80s that probably eclipsed your favorite band. Frustratingly, the same culture sought to bottle her there forever (much like your favorite band), which is actually kind of cruel, and probably why the odd idiot is still trying to cop a feel at trade shows. The good part is she’s a toughie who can largely deal with the odd idiot. More importantly, it seems she is forever aware that Seka was basically her Ziggy Stardust, her alter ego, keeping her feet on the ground long enough to live and tell.

While her relatively flattering portrayals of John Holmes and Ron Jeremy are aging poorly, I trust that her take on each is an honest reflection of her considerable experience, something she generously shares for better or worse. Certainly, it’s not all glam, particularly near the end of her film career. And pay close attention to her work as a free-speech activist, for that is inside Seka, too. It’s one of the many things that makes our narrator a three-dimensional character in a silicone world populated by the likes of Christy Canyon, Sam Kinison, Billy Idol, Mötley Crüe, Nina Hartley, Captain Lou Albano, Val Kilmer, Gary Busey, and both Lynns (Ginger and Amber), keeping Seka’s story, for the most part, on the good side of a naughty beach read.

Some of the inside photos could have been of better quality, but you’re here to read the article, as it were, right? Relax, the accompanying art is largely g-rated. Some of it just could have been crisper.

Also, I’m tempted to deduct a point for the forward by Jim Norton and afterword by Bobby Slayton, neither of whom entirely dignify this excellent book or the impact of Seka’s career on pop culture. But you can just skip those parts. Seka and her memoir need no introduction.

I highly recommend Inside Seka to anyone lucky enough to have been able to watch dirty movies shot on film in proper theaters, or people curious about that time and place.

We recently had an internet outage, exactly at the time I'd finished my last book. Though I have some unread hardback/paper books I somehow decided I needed to read something on my Kindle - which meant the only titles I could read were ones I'd previously downloaded. I don't know WHEN I acquired this book, but it must have been years and years ago. I think I'm just out on biography-memoirs in general. This feels like a way for the author to insist she did porn just because it was well paying and to insist she had a normal childhood and life. Then she mentions how her family literally abandoned her for weeks when she was in elementary school, and how her first husband tried to pimp her out. These are not normal things.

That said, if her story is to be believed, she was one of the first female actors in this industry to gain any agency for herself and likely paved the way for more of the same for the women that followed her. And she seems nice and smart and as a Gen X'er, I certainly knew who she was. (In my mind she was actually Swedish. The real ones will understand why I thought that.)

I can't recommend this book to anyone, but it is certainly written just fine and for folks of a certain age it may resonate well with them.

Plain spoken talk of a life which sometimes resembled complete insanity. After starting out naïve and innocent, this is a story of a survivor who wised up. Given the lifestyle, being a porn star while AIDS raged, she pushed the limits in more ways than one.
It was the era. There was lots of coke, lots of partying, and lots of drinking. When we would get ready to go out for the evening, we’d do a big line of cocaine, half a Quaalude, and a vodka on the rocks. Sam Kinison called that a rocktail and I kept up the name in his honor and eventually his memory. But I always felt I could stop if I wanted to. Seka, Kery Zukus, Inside Seka.
Refusing Stevie Ray Vaughan's offer of a ride meant she dodged the helicopter crash that killed him. The book ends on a happy note with her finding 'true love.'

Classy, open, and totally honest.

Seka is open and brutally honest about her entire life. She is no holds barred and takes no prisoners. She does everything with class and substance. I highly appreciate and respect her.

Not my "normal" reading, but I wanted to know how/why she entered the Adult industry. Simple answer - She picked the wrong guys in her life.
