Alt h ...more

The hardest book I've ever had to get through. I spent so much time on it, because I couldn't find the strength to continue reading. I would have given it a 4/5 had it not been for three things:

1) the morally despicable and horribly disgusting part (pedophilia)
2) the way too self-deprecating narrator; 700 pages and I never felt for him once. He's so obsessed with shame, it's too much, sucks the energy right out of me, just reading it. I do enough self-shaming on my own, I don't need to read ab

The plot:
We follow the narrator, Henrik Vankel, through different stages of his life. The story gravitates towards an eventful period in which Henrik, while working as a teacher, faces both temptation and shame as he gets acquainted with Miriam, a 13 year old girl in his class.

Knausgårdin esikoisteos on kyllä aikamoinen järkäle.

Like some reviews stated before, a terrible read. No more Knausgard for me. I like long sentences and stories within stories but not like he likes to tell them. It's like a drunk is looking for something and tossing drawers around randomly. I should have stopped reading after the first hundred pages, it didn't get better. Despite keeping my Norwegian alive, wasted time.

Joulun pyhiksi on pakko valita paksu kirja, ettei tarvi koko ajan vaihtaa tarinaa.

This is my first attempt at reading Knausgård, and while I gave up this book after less than 50 pages (jeez, this man never gets to the point!!), I have to say I quite like his style of writing. What put me off wasn't so much the digressions - I kind of like that - but rather the pointlessness of them, how he kept rambling on and on and on...A shame really, and I might just try another of his books.

In which Knausgård gets bored of having a straight-forward narrative in his book and abandons the Lolita-esque main story after the first 250 pages of this 750 page doorstopper to instead write about whatever seems to come to mind.

And I wouldn't have it any other way.

I got this as a Christmas present from my mother. I was so happy – returning to the comforting, real and hypnotic world of Knausgård.
This was my 11th Knausgård, having read My Struggle 1-6 and the seasons. I loved every single one of them and still think that they are the best piece of literature I have ever laid my hands on, easily.
Somehow, I wasn't really interested in this one. I knew this involved an older man falling in love with a teenage girl. That is something I am not interested in as i

26-vuotias Henrik saa opetuspestin pohjoisnorjalaisen pikkukylän peruskouluun. Edessä on pako etelään, vanhaan kotikaupunkiin Kristiansandiin. Siellä hän on turvassa. Turvassa kaikelta muulta paitsi omilta ajatuksiltaan, omalta menneisyydeltään.

Likevel endte jeg opp med å like veldig god ...more

If 50% of this novel had been cut/left out I would have given it a top rating. It's a very well written novel, and the first part where the main character is a teacher in the north of Norway is great, but then starts the endless digressions. Some of these are interesting enough, others are not, but the main problem is that there are way too many of them. Often the digressions seem to have no other function than for the author to show his vast knowledge of all kinds of things, and his ability to ...more

I hated it. Story could have been capturing but the narrating was horrible after the start. I’ve got no interest whatsoever to read about these ramblings that offer nothing new or refreshing. Almost gave up the book complete but managed to finish it after all, with heavy skimming in the latter fifth.

(Having read a third)

Should be cut by 50%, then it would be good. Now it has way to many digressions. Read the part of the Min Kamp series on the same topic instead. Same basic material (obviously in there Knausgård does not actually fall in love and there is no sex, but he feels an attraction that he fins scary)
