Kurt Mahr was the pen name of Klaus Mahn (Klaus Otto Mahn), a German science fiction writer famous for his contributions to the Perry Rhodan franchise.
He was known among the writing staff as 'The Physicist', due to his original profession, which also allowed him to give a greater degree of scientific accuracy to his literary work.
He was killed in an accident in Florida in 1993, aged 59.
After reading the Perry Rhodan novel I was figuring on giving this book a three-star rating but I really enjoyed the Atlan story. The Perry Rhodan novel was rather pedestrian, dealing mainly with Rhodan's plan for dealing with an Eastern Bloc government that is proving to be somewhat hostile. After reading it one can see why Ackerman made his initial decision to bypass it he first published the Rhodan series in English. It is a stand alone story really and for the most part doesn't really add anything to the ongoing narrative. A decent enough story but nothing special. The Atlan novel was far more interesting. Atlan and a couple of comrades rescue his foster father and then go on a long trek to escape their enemies. The characters are rather interesting. We also both learn more about the planet they are on, and are presented with some mysteries. Where this story is headed I have no idea, but I am certainly going to along for the ride. If the other three Atlan stories published in English are like this one I am looking forward to them. To my mind the latter story makes this book a decent purchase.
