I had the immense pleasure of meeting Mr. James at a horror convention recently. He is an admirable author, a man who writes for the love of the trade and whom is more than willing to take time to talk to an aspiring young lad such as myself.

Aside from the helpful tips I was given, I picked up a few collections of short stories and a novel, all of which I was supremely excited to read through. And read through them I did; within the week I had finished three collections and the novel Dark Magic.

Russell James has become one of my new favorite authors. Deeply rooted in Stephen King and Edgar Allen Poe, James’ short-story anthology, “Tales From Beyond” is a superb collection of short horror stories steeped in the strange and the macabre. James’ writing is clear, concise, firmly planting the reader within the story and making it impossible to break free.

The book begins with a prologue, which is a short-short in itself. The author details how he came to write horror, walking into the dark o

A great book of short stories. in my opinion, a good short story is harder to write than a full novel, because the author has very little time to set the scene, and to define likable characters. Russell James does an EXCELLENT job of this. I also appreciate that these stories have great twists to the endings, nothing predictable here. I got this book thinking I could read the occasional story between work appointments, looking for something easy to put down anytime. Boy was I ever mistaken! The ...more

The Dark Muse has shared his visions with his latest willing recruit - but will that devotee of horror live to regret it?

This is a great collection of horror stories, each one taking the reader in a different direction, with well-formed characters (both human and animal) set in plots that tantalise and chill. There are some superb endings here - real twists in the tale. I read this collection at one sitting, on a cold November afternoon, with the sky darkening and the temperature plummeting. Pe

Great stories - not scary to me but I have to admit that the elephant one was pretty creepy. Enjoyed the stories and went through them pretty quickly.

Russell R. James was raised on Long Island, New York and spent too much time watching Chiller, Kolchak: The Night Stalker, and Dark Shadows, despite his parents’ warnings. Bookshelves full of Stephen King and Edgar Allan Poe didn’t make things better. He graduated from Cornell University and the University of Central Florida.

After a tour flying helicopters with the U.S. Army, he now spins twisted
