***Mature YA readers recommended - sexual content, violence, language***
I killed my first victim at thirteen years old – my age, not his. He was going to rape me, him and a couple of his friends. And so, I killed him. And then… I killed again. And again.
At seventeen, I’m killing four to six times a year – maybe more. Don’t stress out. I only go after the pedophiles and rapists. There are more out there than I could cover in a lifetime.
Saying I did this on my own would be selfish. Enforcing justice holds a glory all its own. But now, my lifelong friend and backup, Deegan, has been arrested. I have to decide if I want to give myself up and take his place or leave him with all the damning evidence. I don’t want to stop killing. But if I let him take the fall, I can’t kill anymore. And I need to keep doing that.
USA Today Bestselling author, Bonnie Paulson focuses on the drive of sweet western romances and the heros who ride for justice and the love of their lives. Living with her own cowboy helps keep things real!
Some of her favorite authors are Robyn Carr, Liz Isaacson, and Linda Lael Miller!
The sheriff’s son, Deegan, helps the preacher’s daughter cover up the death of bad boy Bobby. They were friends, but this changed their relationship, brought them closer.
Her instinct was to take his ring for a trophy, but Deegan had a better idea. A tattoo.
The death changed her and now she is on the run. She is fueled by nightmares of Bobby, but determined not to be caught.
Are monster born or raised? That age old question, what creates a monster? I am always curious about what drives people to do some of the most heinous acts to others.
Justice doesn’t always come to the rescue and sometimes taking the matter into your own hand is the only answer. I do believe the world has a lot more grey, than black and white.
I didn’t see the direction Bonnie R Paulson was going to take with Psycho Inside me, but I do love the Bonnie and Clyde vigilante aspect. I can always relate to a vigilante and I guess that says something about me. LOL She is a badass psycho and I love her…and her boyfriend too. I feel her need to take down the bullies and pedophiles that prey on children. They do deserve the worst that can be heaped on them…and her name is Cassie.
She trained. She is only a young teenager, but she becomes a predator, created by those whotreated her as prey. I love how she is changing from her 13 year old innocent ways, forcing herself to become a calculating weapon of justice. Fine by me is she wipes out the perverts. You may feel the same way after reading about the degenerates.
The world is dark, with rays of sun shining through when the clouds lift in her mind.
How will this end? Will she be killed in one of the attacks? I want it to end well for her, regardless of what she has done. I love a characters that can win me over so completely.
Molestation and sexual assault are difficult subjects to face and talk about, but Bonnie R Paulsonwants you to know…YOU ARE NOT ALONE..you can survive.
Psycho Inside Me by Bonnie R Paulson….BLEW MY MIND.
I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of Psycho Inside Me by Bonnie R Paulson.
Another amazing journey with my fabulous Barbara!! xD

Psycho - crazy; insane
We live our lives trying to forget the bad things and we cherish the good ones like there is no tomorrow. Do we? We should do it more... Well, that's what we try to do, and at least that's what I try to think I do. Because what else can I do? Remember that life isn't a sea of roses, that the bad guys don't go to jail? I'm not perfect. Way far from that! And in my imperfection I love to dream that in the world there's people like Cassie! You know why? Because she made a thing that many wish to do and can't... SHE FOUGHT! Can you call me crazy, insane... PSYCHO? because I loved so much a killer? Well I guess so! But not judge me... I'm just one more in this asylum...
This is not a book for everyone! When you think it can't get crazier... well... it gets! When you think Cassie gave everything she had to give... you thought wrong! And when you think it has a happy end... you wake up!
Wow! What a frickin story! I love books base on, people getting justice, revenge and vigilante killings. And if you know me, i hate reading or seeing on the news about children being abused or murdered. Makes me absolutely livid, when the abuser just gets a slap on the wrist. While the child gets a lifetime of physical and mental pain! So, when I stumbled across this book on Amazon and read the blurb, I couldn't hit one-click fast enough.
Without going into too much detail, basically it's about a teenage girl, Cassie Mulligan, taking the law into her own hands (after being an almost victim of sexual assault)
I really like the story line. But I didn't care for this book. I almost DNF but I ain't no quitter and I wanted to see if Cassie would get any better... No, unfortunately she didn't.
I guess, I wanted something darker! I wanted the abusers to suffer. Not some quick sloppy death. ["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
I'm tempted to shelve this as a fantasy, because it is a fantasy, a revenge fantasy. As that, it's rather brilliant. The blurb and other reviewers cover what the book is about, so I won't belabor that here. I will say if you were ever sexually assaulted/molested/abused, if you know anyone who's ever been sexually assaulted/molested/abused, OR if you've ever just been horrified by hearing about sexual assault/molestation/abuse, you might love this book! It's a girl's get even. BIG TIME. What I really loved was how the escalation was handled. The usual suspects were given their due. And by that I mean, the usual suspects were well-represented. Kudos for that bit of psychological profiling. It's a fast read, the pacing is tight. I think I wish it didn't make me smile as much as it did, but I was also a huge fan of Dexter.
Okay with a blurb starting out like this one, talking about killing her first victim at thirteen, how could you not want to pick up this book and see what it is all about and read about this girls story? I know I did!! I love the idea of this book, kind of a Dexter theme to it, though the main character, Cassie, isn't working with police to find these men and kill them. She's doing it on her own, well almost. She has Deegan right by her side.
When you first start this book, you start off right away with the first kill, Rape or potential rape scenes are either done right or it just seem like a big ole mess. This one was done right. I experienced every feeling that Cassie felt. I was scared about what was going to happen but I couldn't turn away because I wanted to find out what happened. It was pretty gruesome, but not holy crap, guts and blood everywhere going to barf gruesome, but pretty life changing for Cassie.
Throughout the story, Cassie marks her killing every year, along with her with crush and uber hottie Deegan, buy another killing. Although their relationship is anything but perfect. Every year they kill, get tattoos to remember the killings and then don't talk until the next year. Not by Cassie's choice tho. Lots of drama between these two, but understandable drama, Deegan is a typical boy trying to do the right thing, thinking the wrong thing type of stuff.
The ending is a BIG ending, but I loved it. Everything Cassie does and ever predator she kills becomes more and more of a danger, but she is hell bent on ridding the world of these sick men and nothing and no one is gonna stop her!! This book is obviously for mature audiences, but it is such a good read, i encourage everyone to BUY THIS BOOK! Awesome!
Definitely not my normal reading, but I was surprised with this story. The beginning was the hardest part for me (not the book, just because it is out of my normal genre and comfort zone lol), but then it took off and I enjoyed it. Well written. I am excited to read the author's zombie romance books now, just to see what happens lol...
This was a bit difficult for me. Being a survivor, it did bring back memories I would rather not think about. Realistically, I think about them anyway. To say I liked the book makes me wonder what kind of person I am. I mean she is 13-17 taking the lives of people, sometimes setting them up. But then I think about the people. They were rapists and pedophiles. Suddenly, I’m good with it. I read these kinds of books because I like examining the minds of the victim and the perpetrator. Cassie is both. I understand the first kill. I couldn’t do it, (I can honestly say that with confidence). But that doesn’t mean I don’t understand it. Nor does it mean I am upset about it. A part of me wishes I could have been Cassie. Part of me is happy I’m not. Part me wonders what is wrong with me that I couldn’t defend myself. Part of me wonders how I would have turned out if I did defend myself. What parts of me would I have lost? Realistically, I was much younger than Cassie. I wouldn’t have survived if I could have managed to fight back. It doesn’t stop me from feeling like a failure for not fighting. Is the book realistic? Yes. No. The abuse happens. The author got that right. Disturbingly so. Cassie and Deegan getting away with so many murders? No. It wouldn’t have happened. There are a number of things wrong with that. Does it bother me? Nope. I am fine with fantasy revenge. I have done it a lot. Not going to lie. I was doing that while listening to this. Cassie and Deegan have a strange relationship. Is it love? I’m no expert on that. Is it love for killing? Again no expert here. Is it a love for saving someone else from being harmed? Could be. Again no expert here but I do tend to rescue others. It has been years that I kept everything locked up. Then I discovered that others took courage from things I experienced. They took hope. They gave sympathy. They felt free to talk about things. I started talking more about things. It is still mainly when necessary though a few times I was just sharing. So I’m not the one to really determine what kind of relationship Cassie and Deegan have. I just understand Cassie feels they need each other and Deegan seems to believe it too. This book brings up the old question are psychopaths born that way or made. I mean Cassie wasn’t murdering anything before the assault on her. So it would seem as though that act made her. Except that you have many survivors who never kill anyone. So was she born that way? What about Deegan. Why did he become Cassie’s partner? Was it hearing about the cases as a child? Hearing his father speaking of how the perpetrators aren’t punished enough? Was it seeing what happened to Cassie and his role in it? I don’t have the answers. I’ll be thinking about it though. Is this book for everyone? Absolutely not. Please be aware of what you are thinking of reading or listening to. This is a book that deals with sexual abuse of a minor. That alone makes it not a book for everyone. It is also a book that deals with some messy murders. Think about that before you decide to get this book. If you can handle that, the book gave me a lot to think about. It may do that for you. If you are looking for realistic punishments are neatly done, dark punishments this might not satisfy you. It is firmly set in fantasy. I listened to this on Audible. I was given a copy for review consideration. I voluntarily reviewed this selection. All opinions are my thoughts while listening to this book and my thoughts afterward. The narrator on the Audible version is Jenifer Krist. I liked her narration. I think she did well as a grown Cassie telling the story of her youth. Good pick in my opinion.
I must say, this was a pretty short read. And it was anything but quick and easy. I mean seriously. there were times I just had to stop and take a breather. There was no way I could have finished this all in one sitting even if I wanted to. Why's that? It was just so difficult to process some of the things these guys did. I mean, seriously. There were also quite a few moral implications that I had to spend some time accepting. I get that these people are bad. And I totally understand why Cassie would feel the need to kill them, especially because she keeps almost getting raped or killed. However... I don't know. I don't want to get into that now.
Characters So, Cassie. This entire books is told from her POV, starting with her first kill at 13 years old. It was totally an accident. From there, it goes from 14 to 15 to 16 to 16 1/2 and then ends with 17. Throughout this short read, I couldn't get a hold of how I felt about her. Okay, let me rephrase. I wish I had known her from a bit before that first kill just so I'd have a better feel of how she changed, you know? That's always fun to see. But in this case, it's straight from one kill to the next, with little in between. So I could only really compare how she reacted to each kill. She's sickened and disgusted for the first few times, and yet, she continues. I admire her for wanting to the right thing. I guess my only hesitation is: Is that really the right thing? What if that first kill had gone a bit differently, you know? Anyways, the only other main character is Deegan. He's there from the very beginning and Cassie had a crush on him back then. I'd consider him a bit of a static character because he's always there when she really needs him. And even though that's true, we don't see him very much. So I only have his words to go by, and they're basically the same over the course of the book. Which leads me to believe that he hasn't changed all that much. But I still liked him, because there needs to be a solid rock somewhere or another, right?
Plot Of course, you're expecting it because you read the summary, right? But somehow, even knowing that she kills people, each kill is a surprise. It never happens the way you (or Cassie) expects. As far as storyline, the summary gives away everything except the last two chapters or so. But even expecting everything, I didn't see some of this coming. How many surprises can there be in such a short book? (It was 528 pages in my ebook) I didn't count them or anything, but there were quite a few, and I didn't see most of them coming. This is a quality I'm starting to appreciate in my reading. So even though it was difficult, it was certainly worthwhile.
Rating: 4 stars
Why: Still have a few mixed feelings about the morality and such. I don't know why this book decided to give me those mixed feelings, but it did. I loved it, but at the same time...
Recommendation: Definitely for mature readers. I can't think of a specific age, but if you can handle pedophiles, rapists, and gruesome murders... Go for it. This is some amazing dark contemporary.

I have to say, I LOVE this cover.
BLURB Preachers daughter, 13 year old Cassie is almost raped by Bobby, a young teen at her school. Deegan is her saviour, but Cassie accidentally kills Bobby. Luckily Deegan saves them both again by getting rid of the body.
Deegan has been Cassie's crush for a while now, 2 years older than her and pretty much neighbours, they grew up together, but drifted apart. The accident brought them together, bonded them. Cassie discovers a taste for vengeance against rapists and paedophiles, she wants to protect others. And Deegan almost agrees with her, he craves justice, being the son of a sheriff, he's seen too many perverts get away with their crimes.
From then on we see Cassie feeling the itch for vengeance every year coming up to the anniversary of Bobby's death. We see her mentality slip and transform. She becomes stronger, more determined, cleverer. But also she suffers from nightmares and she becomes more introverted.
Quite a dark book, I really enjoyed this. But it needed editing and a bit more... It has a LOT of potential.
Minor details knocked it down a notch, one or two sentences didn't make sense... and grammar; 'lie' instead of 'lay'. They also got incomplete tattoos after the first murder, adding to them after another murder, which didn't make any sense because they didn't know they were going to kill again. As for the potential, I would have liked it to play with sexuality a little more, maybe make the lead female a little more kick ass, and it could have been a lot grittier to make it a truly dark book. If these things were corrected/included, I probably would have given it at least 4.5 stars, and definitely recommended it to my friends who love a dark read.
The characters were good, justified in their actions because of their backgrounds. The murders were tense and creepy. The writing was intelligent, spoilt by lack of editing. Though the characters are young, it's not YA because of the issues that it deals with. The book kept me reading, it's good in length and I was happy with the end. Will give this author another go.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review for my stop on the blog tour at Donnie Darko Girl.
If Dexter were female and had a partner...
After reading the synopsis for this book, PSYCHO INSIDE ME, how could I not want to read it? I've never read a book like this before. Once finished, there was so much for me to process I needed time to think about everything that happened and what it all meant to me. I'm still not sure I can explain it all.
Cassie is almost raped right after her thirteenth birthday, and her friend Deegan stops it from happening. He's there when the would-be rapist is accidentally killed by Cassie and hides the body. And so they share this terrible secret. Every year, right after her birthday, Cassie puts herself in more and more danger to catch a rapist and kill him. And Deegan always happens by to help her out. Until he's caught, and Cassie has to decide what she's going to do.
I didn't understand the relationship between Deegan and Cassie. It sounded like they had grown up together but acted more like strangers when they were around each other. Cassie obviously had a crush on Deegan and hoped her feelings would be reciprocated, but Deegan told her they couldn't act like they were "together" or else they would be suspected in the murders. If they knew each other well, wouldn't it look more suspicious if they acted like they DIDN'T know each other? They ran together everyday, so I didn't understand his reasoning.
I understood what happened with the first death, and even the second death, but after that I started thinking about whether they were serving out justice or turning into the very monsters they hated. And although this is what I consider a dark contemporary novel, the science fiction part of me started wondering what if the consequences of their actions rippled into something worse than what they were trying to change? What if another fate had been in store for those rapists? It's a lot to process.
Definitely an interesting story, PSYCHO INSIDE ME will have you on your toes the entire time and will swiftly have you thinking about what constitutes right or wrong and what would you do if you thought you could get away with the very same thing.
I walked into PSYCHO INSIDE ME expecting a simple thriller. I closed the book with a lot of thoughts in my head, from what society views acceptable, to the difference between right and wrong. This book will be divisive – I can imagine mixed reactions on all sides from love to hate. But isn’t a good book supposed to spark emotions?
One moment changes everything for thirteen year old Cassie, the preacher’s daughter, when she is attacked by a group of local thugs. Her first kill. Her first brush with real adrenaline. Her first fall into a dark but sweet relationship. This kill becomes a need, and a reason to continue her twisted relationship of sorts with Deegan.
Cassie becomes more and more bold as the story unravels – and more crass. The way the story is told represents this – which may not to be every reader’s likening. I didn’t agree with all of Cassie’s choices, especially not the way that danger became necessary for her. It’s hard enough to consistently make smart choices at seventeen, much less when there’s constant danger thrown in the mix. I will say I had to suspend belief a little at parts. While I somehow don’t blink at the thought of a teenage serial killer, some of the situations Cassie gets herself into seemed a little over the top. But I’m a small town girl, what do I know?
Is this a young adult book? Oh, hell if I know. I’ve been debating this since I was halfway through the book. The age of the protagonist fits young adult, as the book travels between the ages of thirteen and seventeen. However, I wasn’t entirely sure that the character growth fit the coming-of-age theme that accompanies young adult, despite Cassie’s dabbles in finding herself. I’m not one for book censorship due to age (mind you, I read Stephen King’s IT when I was in seventh grade), but I did find myself questioning if I’d recommend this book to the young. If you want to call this young adult, I’d call it a very mature young adult read.
Well the synopsis was enough to grab my attention “I killed my first victim at thirteen years old – ” Whaaaat??? I was lucky enough to receive an ARC for the blog tour and seriously, what a ride this story was. It’s sad – scary – and at some times very much real. Because there are so many separate stories of abuse that I’m sure can and will hit home for a lot of readers. Cassie is in a bad situation when something happens….. it strikes something inside her – quenching a thirst she never knew she had, one that leaves her with a need to replenish.
Deegan is there – always. Physically and mentally for her. He is her friend, savior and first love… but they have a secret between then that causes him to keep his distance, leaving her feeling lonely and needy. Those needs spill out into her new fascination with murder. Cassie puts herself in some pretty terrifying situations that left my mouth gaping open more than once throughout the book and dying to find out what would happen next. Think a teenage girl/Dexter Morgan. She’s out, expelling the garbage of society to replenish her desires to kill. All the while Deegan showing up at just the right time…. but this relationship can’t keep going. Too many people are missing or found dead and Deegan is afraid that it will all come back to burn them in the end.
He continues to keep his distance – leaving Cassie even more desperate to keep him close, the only way she knows how? Keep searching for more and more perverts, pedophiles and rapists to kill…
This is a YAish book with a serious dark tale that will leave you wondering how safe are your children? There are lessons to be learned in this book, even if it is fiction – these could be REAL tales of abuse in anyone’s life…
*I received this book for review from the author, but this in no way affects my thoughts expressed below* Rating: 4.5 of 5 Stars When starting this book, I thought it sounded amazing. I was a little nervous though, I'd never read anything like it so I was worried about whether or not I would enjoy it.
From the first few pages, I was immediately hooked. I listened almost constantly(I read the audiobook version) and let me tell you this is not a book I recommend for a bedtime story(and i mean that in a good way)!
I loved Cassie's character. Even though I really cannot relate to her as far as experiences, I found myself somehow doing just that. With every kill, every scene really, I was constantly on edge. Scared for her more-so than for her victims. It's almost scary, actually, how much the fact that she was killing people didn't really bother me. She was taking out scum, and yes it's wrong to kill period, but I had a hard time faulting her.
Deegan I also liked. He is always there for Cassie whenever she needs him, from that first kill on. At the same time, though, to keep them both safe outside of killing he keeps his distance. Like Cassie, this character is perfectly crafted by the author and I just couldn't get enough of both of them in this book!
Seeing as I read(well, listened to) the audiobook version of this book, I have to say the narrator did an outstanding job! She really sold the story for me, too. Her voice was the perfect one to represent Cassie and I feel like she just really knew what she was doing. The book itself was already an amazing yet chilling read, but the narrator really magnified it.
So, overall, I have to say I highly recommend this book. Whether you read the book or listen to the audiobook Psycho Inside Me is a wonderful story. Just remember what I said, and maybe try not to read it right before you go to sleep!
Have you read the blurb for this book? It starts talking about killing at age 13... the age of the killer. From there, Cassie is compelled to kill on each anniversary of that first kill. She takes out men who she deems deserve to die, pedophiles and rapists (the sludge of American society). She becomes a vigilante. And she's not alone. Every year after Deegan helps rescue Cassie from her would-be rapist, he is there on the anniversary to help her. That year in between kills is fraught with life, worry, and an almost non-existent relationship between the two of them. But Cassie loves him, so when Deegan is arrested, she will do anything to save him. This book is disturbing in its content and graphic nature. It deals with the things most people don't want to talk about. And it shows how one girl who, once she is deemed a victim, decides to never be a victim again. Becoming a vigilante isn't for everyone, but it works for Cassie. I found that by the end of the book, I was proud of her on some level for taking out these guys who hurt other people. And when the book ended, I wanted to know what would happen next (something I've even asked the author about). I hope Cassie and Deegan's story isn't over yet. The storytelling is compelling and kept me reading even when I wasn't sure my heart could take anymore. I read it in a sitting with hardly a break, unable to stop... kinda like Cassie.
The plausibility of this book is just not there. Cassie's an amateur and she doesn't improve from one kill to the next. She leaves her prints everywhere. There were prints in the cop car. I'm sure there were plenty of hairs left behind at every one of her crime scenes. The cop had bitten her nipple. He had her skin cells. She had blood all over her clothes. It mentions she has scratches and bruises which means her victims would have her skin cells under their nails. There's just no way that she would have been able to keep going as long as she did without being caught. I did like that because Cassie is an amateur, all of her kills are pretty much flukes. i also liked her physical reactions to the kills.
The fact that Cassie killed so many people would have her being tried as an adult, not a minor. Regardless of who she was killing.
I'm not sure how I feel about the relationship between her and Deegan. There really wasn't one. They spent most of their time apart.
This book didn't exactly go the way I was expecting. I was expecting a much darker read than what I got. Cassie was just too innocent. She wasn't jaded the way she should have been considering her moonlighting escapades.
Then. Than. Paulson needs to work on these. Then--is like next. Than--is to compare. Really simple.
I wouldn't say this was the worst book. But it wasn't enough for me.
Cassie was just 13 years old when she killed her victim...but that one is going to rape her so that's self defense, right?
Her Second victim wasn't planned neither. Her friends Kari's Uncle. The Uncle is a pervert. He touched Cassie's best friend, her niece inappropriate.
What am I doing? I can’t do this. I’m not strong enough. I clenched the knife handle, moved now to the pocket of my sweatshirt. Sweat gathered under my bra and at the small of my back. I opened my eyes. I couldn’t help it at that point. Sheldon had moved himself above me, his eyes bright with lust – similar to how Bobby’s had been. He grabbed my pants, pulling me onto my back and straightening my hips.
So that's enough to kill him. Well thinking that this one can be count as a plan but he's just like Bobby who his first victim. They all like young girls. They look them lusty eyes. They all have to be killed!!
GOD!! I don't know how to say somethings! I'm so speechless! First I could say I never read thriller genres. Also there's a few things that I love about main Character Cassie. I feel her...literally. Honestly I never enjoy a book like this. Cassie and Deegan so much unique. Maybe they started the killing criminals too young but seems like they just fit so good thought. So many people can see this book inappropriate so something but for me it was AWESOME!
I wanted to read this book because the synopsis sounded interesting, and the cover looked good too. Because, in my opinion, the synopsis gives away so many details from the plot and the action of the book, I won't talk about it myself.
This book is good if you want to read something different, kind of original, fast paced, and not so long. It's a good novel because of the idea and especialy how the author put it in practice. Because of the writing makes you turn pages and makes you want know more about the characters and why she killed those people. Really if you are not a fan of killing or blood I don't think you would enjoy it, because is kind of a dark read and without feelings, like mercy or shame.
I liked this book especialy for the idea, for the writing style and the girl character. But if I should choose between her and Deegan, he is more calculated and calm. And many times he helped her a lot and... kind of saved her. If you'll read the book, or you read it, then you know what I mean.
So, if you like thriller, YA, not so happy novels, you can read this. Is nice, fast, short and interesting.
As the blurb suggests, this book is about a girl named Cassie, a preachers daughter, who was the victim of an attempted rape at the young age of thirteen. Her attacker, a young neighbourhood creep, meets his demise when Cassie's friend-turned-accomplice, Deegan, shows up to rescue her and they accidentally kill him. Keeping the secret of their first kill, there is no denying that it has changed Cassie and Deegan permanently. Over the years the pair embark on a number of vigilante-style attacks on pedophiles and rapists, despite their complicated and distant relationship. At times Cassie's increasing desire to kill is disturbing...but certainly not as disturbing as the thoughts and intentions of the men she targets. That being said, I found the most disturbing factor to be the positions of power and public trust some of the rapists were in - a policeman, a teacher...even a counselor for sexual abuse victims.
I particularly loved the ending of this book. It gets under your skin and leaves you questioning the boundaries of right, wrong and justice. An interesting, thought provoking and quick read that is not for the fainthearted.
if you like psychotic then this is a book for you! great kill scenes lots of actions. I love how the main character goes from almost getting raped at thirteen and killing accidentally her would be rapist and gets away with it. how she has help from her friend to keep killing pedophiles and rapist once a year for years until the friend and her find romance with each other but can't be together while still killing. no spoiler from me on the ending just love this book
3.75 stars it was really good story to read ... I read a lot of dark story where the heroine get raped and no one could protect her ... it was really nice to see the victum became the predetor
but I hate the title of this book because it did not refect the story of it ... because the heroine was no pscho she was good and did good ...
Intense, but I made it through. Reality is rough. I liked the main character, Cassie and her psycho-ness. It brought out emotions I could not handle at times, so I put it down and came back later. I am an emotional reader.
First, I would like to thank the author Bonnie R. Paulson for giving me this book for an honest review. This book is most definitely different and not for everyone, but I enjoyed it to the very last page. Great book Bonnie.
Cassie is a 13 year old preacher's daughter. Minding her own business and enjoying a peaceful day, she is confronted by a group of popular older boys. A group of boys that have very bad intentions when it comes to the innocent Cassie.
When their confrontation turns dangerous, Cassie fights for herself and accidentally kills her attacker.
Not only is killing him putting Cassie into a very bad situation, but it also puts her friend and crush Deagan in a very bad situation when he chooses to help Cassie dispose of the body.
Cassie knows what she has done is wrong and she should feel horrible but she doesn't.
What she has done was to protect herself. Her attackers may not have deserved to be murdered but he should never have been attacking her.
As she and Deagan move on and cover their tracks, her internal push to make other sexual predators pay for their sins she starts going on the prowl to make all the evil pay for their actions.
"Thou shalt not lie. Oh, man. Commandments dropped like flies when i was around."
There was no other to get away with her justified vigilante actions besides lying to her parents day in and day out. By lying never stops her or Deagan who becomes her faithful sidekick when the need to end a dark soul arises.
This book is NOTHING of what I expected in a very good way. I loved this book and the characters. They never once lied to themselves. They know what their were doing at every turn and I am pretty sure there was no Psycho inside Cassie.
What a wild ride! I love books that are from the point of view of the killer, it's so fascinating to see their side of the story and to read the things that could easily go through a real killers mind! I love Cassie she was a very likeable character, having a partner in crime definitely made things more exciting(is there a URL to where i can order one of those?!) .. If only guys were that helpful in real life! ha
Great writing and character details. Loved the story line. Looking forward to reading the next book to follow to fin out what happens with Cassie and Deegan.
I received a free copy and that in no way has changed my option on the book.
I wouldn’t’ recommend Psycho Inside Me to anyone under the age of 15, even 16. I didn't really know what to expect from this book but wow, I was expecting what I read. It was an amazing read full of raw emotions.
The book starts off with a bang, my heart jumped in my chest. I just could not believe what was happening, yes I know somewhat what the books is about but it is so much more. We first get introduced into our main character Cassie in this horrible situation, and my heart is already broken for her.
Reading Psycho Inside Me was weird and interesting all at the same time. We are in the mind of someone who kills. Kills people who are not the best people, but she still kills and it's quite interesting to be in her mind. How one incident changed our main character or anyone in her situation forever, maybe not for the better in a way. The way that Bonnie R. Paulson writes is very intriguing, it pulled me straight in.
Other than killing people, Cassie is a really interesting character, she is so damn strong but witty at the same time. The way that Cassie speaks and acts, seem like she is so much older than she is
Deegan, let’s talk about our main male protagonist. I love him and hate him. He cares so much for Cassie but has a funny way of showing it most of time. He ignores her for so long, only talks to her when he wants to, only sees her when he wants to. I think that is the an attribute that annoyed me the most of his, also I think a lot at the start Deegan treated Cassie as a kid, yes she was 13 but he was treating her like she was 7. Other than that I really liked him. You could tell that he liked and cared so much for Cassie.
The whole thing they do, with killing these men is all wrong and horrible but so right at the same time. The first few times it was self defence but after time Cassie and even Deegan find they feel some power doing it, they feel good. Psycho Inside Me is very confronting and not for the faint hearted at all. Pyscho Inside Me is full of very raw emotions from all the characters. It’s hard to describe how you feel when reading but you feel everything the characters feel.
There is rarely a time in a YA book or any that I like the mum of our main character. But I loved Cassie’s mum, she was just so nice. She didn’t annoy me at all, she was kind, understanding but still acted like a mum. What happens to her, broke everyone apart. I disliked Cassie’s dad a lot, and when I say a lot, I mean a lot. He just got on my nerves.
I really liked the way that Bonnie R.Paulson set out the novel, how it skipped years and only lasted a few days at a certain age. It was original and different and I really liked it. Except with this it lacked a little in characterisation of both Cassie and Deegan.
I also liked that the author added that Deegan and Cassie getting tattoo's everytime they 'kill' someone. I am a tattoo person all the way so it was really interesting.
The way things end before the epilogue was intense. It was full of action, creepiness. It was epic and my heart broke for nearly everyone. The epilogue was just, my heart, it made me smile a lot even though I wanted to hit Cassie’s dad. But the Deegan and Cassie moments. Just *sigh*
Psycho Inside Me was very short but very original sometimes creepy novel with a bittersweet ending that made me smile.
At A Glance Not what I expected. The plot and concept just didn’t come together for me.
The Good I do love me a good vigilante book. I love when people get to get revenge or justice on the bad people of the world, and that’s what Psycho Inside Me provided.
I did enjoy some of the story. It was nerve-wracking and exciting.
The Bad In the end, I think this book was written more for the author than the readers. If you read the acknowledgments at the end, you find out why Bonnie wrote this story. I am happy that the author found a way to deal with her past, good for her. But I do feel like you can tell that Psycho Inside Me was not written with an audience in mind. There was not much of a plot. There was not much of a romance. The story was not well thought out. It just fell flat in almost every aspect.
I was most disappointed with Cassie. I thought I was going to meet this strong heroine that took out justice on the asses of rapists and child molesters. Yeah, no. She was too impatient, which made her sloppy with every kill. If not for Deegan, Cassie would have been raped and/or killed from the get-go and with every target afterward. Deegan is the one who did most the work. Cassie was just the bait. Cassie wasn’t the organized, meticulous killer I was hoping for.
The Snuggly Deegan was too bipolar when it came to Cassie and him. They never really had a relationship even though they obviously liked each other all because of stupid reasons. I found it more frustrating than tantalizing. Even at the end, I was not satisfied with their relationship.
Warning, this book contains uncomfortable topics like rape and child molestation. Some scenes are graphic.
Final Thoughts This was not my cup of tea. Psycho Inside Me had a rough but interesting concept but the execution was lacking in a lot of areas. I would not recommend this book to anyone but I can say people on Goodreads seem to love it, so it might just be me. No recommended.
Quotes “You, doll. You’re the someone else. I can’t feel like this about you and really be with anyone else. Having a girlfriend holds the other chicks at bay. Plus, she doesn’t ask questions. She doesn’t care. I can’t have you like I want, so I make it seem like I have what I want.”
I smiled at Deegan, who watched me with a territorial glint in his eyes. The thought that he considered me his, if only for the night, lightened me even more. I had no guilt, not for a few minutes. Not then. Not when we’d succeeded – again.
He pushed me forward on the swing. “You’re so pretty. I just thought you should know that.”
“Every time I’ve met with you and one of these guys has gone down, a small piece of me feels avenged. We can’t stop, not yet. I just don’t want you getting hurt. I can’t handle that you’re touched and injured every time and I don’t know about it until afterwards.”
This book follows around Cassie, a preacher’s daughter. She hasn’t really done anything wrong in her life and she follows the Ten Commandments that have been drilled in her head. This all changes on the day that a group of kids show up at Cassie’s little getaway spot with not so good intentions. Her life takes a drastic turn when one of the boys in the group, Bobby, decides that he is going to take Cassie’s virginity and Cassie is too scared to do anything. Then Deegan comes to the rescue. This is where Cassie’s sick obsession of killing rapists and pedophiles comes into play.
The book goes through a few years of Cassie’s life. Starting at her first murder when she is 13 and ending at 21. I like books that jump ahead like that. It usually keeps the book going a little quicker. There wasn’t a bunch of filler stuff just to make the book longer. The fact that Cassie’s dad is a preacher only comes into play a couple times during the book. This is more to play on the stereotype that preacher’s daughters do no wrong.
Deegan and Cassie have a sick relationship that starts on the day of her first murder. Deegan is two years old that Cassie and I believe that she being 13 and he 15 makes a big difference. If you are a feminist you might not like this book because he is continually there to save her. Every time she puts herself in a bad situation she says that she wishes he would come rescue her. I think it would have been a little more exciting if she would have done a few more murders by herself. She does however become a little bolder, and psycho, as the story progresses.
The more she kills, the more she feels that she has too. She would do it every year on the anniversary of the first one and she also wanted a prize so she could remember them. These are like the perfect examples of a serial killer. Deegan fuels this inside of her because he urges her to get the things to remember her victims and helps her get into shape. She falls for him very quickly even though he stays away from as much as he can.
The fact that this book has a lot of talk about rape, and obviously murder, I would say it is definitely for more mature audiences even though the age of the characters fit in perfectly for young adult. I also feel that this book falls victim to the synopsis that gives away too much. It is however different than anything I have read, it seems pretty original with the vigilante take, and it is definitely fast paced because of the length.
I recommend it if you are into these types of books!
*I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review
I wish to thank the author for providing me a copy of her book in exchange for an honest review.
I've never read anything quite like this. Was it good? Yes. Was it shocking? Yes. Was it offensive? No. Did I like it? Yes. I was surprised with the subject matter and how the characters went about their killings, but the way the author presents the story you get away from the shock and start to really understand the persons in a different way.
Vigilante fiction. Original in many ways. A story that could have been like any other teen killer story was given reasoning and a sense of purpose. Do I recommend that people do what Cassie and Deegan did, absolutely not, but how many of us have heard about a sexual assault on the radio, read about it in the news or saw it on the tv and thought that these sick people should die? Yeah, that's what I thought.
The author brings to the forefront the effects of sexual assault. The fact that even those that report it to a parent are turned away by the very person(s) that should be doing everything they can to keep their children safe at all times. The fact that there are people out there ready to exploit others sexually. The fact that there are people that take advantage of their leadership position to victimize those younger than them sexually. The fact that there are people who place themselves in positions of trust and time and time again victimize the victims until they just give up on life altogether. Sexual assault is running rampant through our world, no place is safe but the best thing you can do is to educate friends and family about how to keep themselves from being victims and to be strong enough to report it if it does happen to them.
The story follows Cassie through several years, from her first accidental killing to her last purposeful one before she stops for certain reasons. Cassie and Deegan are mentally dysfunctional and I don't think that Cassie would have gone the route she did if he wasn't in the picture. Deegan guided her in the beginning and from there a monster was created. This was a great read and I understand the reason why the author wrote it after reading her notes at the end of the book. I hope that she was able to calm at least some of the demons that keep her awake at night.
I recommend this to anyone looking for a contemporary, original read. I do not recommend this for teens under seventeen though because I would not want them to get the wrong idea of how to take care of a bad situation. Not everyone out in the world is bad, there are resources, but the biggest thing is to educate your loved ones.
