This book is not so much about what you would think, but about the lives of people and what they live for. Freedom!

Tom Lewis writes about where he lives - near the coast of NC in New Bern. Most of his novels relate to the beach areas in and around North and South Carolina. His books always bring warm reminders of growing up in NC. Chains is about the Civil War and the underground railroad. It is well-written and enlightening. I was sad when it ended because now I will need to wait for a new book from him!

I am sad to see that this is probably the last book of this author available to read. There is one more but only available in paperback.
If you are a history buff of the civil war and slavery, you would enjoy this read. While at first it took me a little while to keep all the characters straight and seeming to be a little rushed at the end to tidy everything up, I still enjoyed this book by Tom Lewis. Not his usual mystery type writing but still entertaining.

I enjoyed this story, written from a slave's perspective as well as some of the more mild plantation owners, at the outbreak of the American Civil War. I liked the insight into the plantation owners lives and the treatment of their slaves.

This book was so good. This book was so real to me. I could feel the pain of all of the characters. I loved how the author developed each character. Buy this book. This was the best $1.00 spent. I can't wait to read more of his books.

I would have given it 5 stars if the stories weren't all wrapped up quickly at the end. I enjoyed it because I love the genre

i really enjoyed this book. I love historical fiction and this book did an excellent job of weaving factual details about the civil war into the lives of his very well developed characters.
