Sous le règne de saint Louis, Caterina exerce la médecine à Paris, à l'Hôtel-Dieu, malgré l'hostilité de ceux qui l'entourent. Libre, devenue enceinte, elle découvre trop tard que son amant est déjà marié, et elle décide alors d'assumer seule son destin. C'est l'époque où la dissection des cadavres, interdite par l'Eglise, se fait en cachette. Mais le groupe auquel elle appartient est dénoncé et ses confrères masculins décident lâchement de lui faire porter l'entière responsabilité du délit. Abandonnée par tous, Caterina parvient à s'enfuir en Italie où, plus passionnée que jamais par son métier qu'elle reprend à l'hôpital, elle lutte jusqu'au bout de ses forces contre la jalousie et la misogynie de ses confrères. C'est une vie extraordinaire qu'évoque ce magnifique roman de Valeria Montaldi qui s'est fondée sur des documents authentiques. Car, contrairement à ce qu'on croit, il y eut bel et bien des femmes médecins au Moyen Age !

She was born in Milan, where she earned a degree in History of Art Criticism. After about twenty years of journalism dedicated to the art, cultural places and people in Milan, in 2001 she published her first novel, "The Wool Merchant", immediately acclaimed by both public and critics, and which received three prizes.
The author lives and works in Milan.

The rebel of the title is the doctor Caterina da Colleaperto and the events unfold in 1254, between Milan and Paris. The book is an intertwining of fiction and reality, as many characters really existed while others are invented by the author. Even the two cities are narrated by the writer as they really were in those years according to historical data, with their differences and their equality. The plot tells the story of this woman, a doctor in a time when women could not practice this profession, especially perform surgery, which instead Caterina, rebellious soul, performs with skill. But it is precisely her swimming against the tide that will make her run many dangers and force her to flee Paris to return to Milan. And if the two protagonist cities of the book are Milan and Paris, could a parallel plot linked to fashion be missing? Of course not. And in fact one of the stories that intertwine with that of Caterina is that of Marco Rainardi, a Milanese tailor of great ambitions, who experiments in Milan the great-great-grandfathers of what will later become showrooms and fashion shows. The book aims to highlight the discrimination to which women of the time were subjected and this theme is very present, but without ever being too heavy or annoying. The plot is in fact very compelling and the book is all in all very pleasant, placing itself halfway between the medical fiction, the love story, the social denunciation and the historical story.

Trama poco coinvolgente, personaggio che non conquista e poco approfondito. Sicuramente buona la ricostruzione storica ma si vede che l'autrice è una giornalista: tutto risulta molto "freddo".

1254. Paris. Une femme habillée en homme se hâte vers un moulin abandonné sur les bords de la Bièvre. Catarina a rendez-vous avec Ronaldo, médecin renommé qui l'a prise comme élève. Enfin elle va assister à sa première dissection !
1254 Milan , un commis , un chirurgien barbier, un tailleur ..

Valeria Montaldi avec la rebelle: femme médecin au moyen-âge, relève un défi de taille. Passionner le lecteur sans qu'à aucun moment il n'y ait de lassitude ou d'ennui. Défi relevé brillamment. Ce roman a toutes les qualités. Ecriture fluide , contexte historique précis et bien documenté, personnages attachants ou à défaut intéressants et le portrait d'une femme exceptionnelle , celui d'une pionnière capable de braver les obstacles de sa condition de femme et de s'imposer comme médecin envers et contre tous.
Un roman passionnant que j'ai vraiment apprécié et qui ne saurait que plaire au plus grand nombre.

Un romanzo storico molto lungo, con una trama a mio parere poco avvincente e ampi passaggi in cui l'autrice si sofferma su elementi, personaggi o vicissitudini non utili ai fini della trama, né interessanti di per sé. Mi è sembrato in generale piuttosto noioso e non l'ho trovato brillante né originale in alcun aspetto specifico. Come romanzo storico non è il massimo.

Uma história bastante envolvente, mas esperava mais aprofundamento da parte histórica, principalmente em relação a política milanesa do século XII, que foi pincelada muito brevemente. Mas foi bastante interessante realizar essa leitura, pois conseguimos sentir o drama e o preconceito sofrido pela personagem ao tentar atuar como médica. Contudo, alguns pontos ficaram sem amarras.

Lu en français. L'histoire de Caterina et de son métier de femme médecin au Moyen Âge. Lecture agréable mais je pensais en apprendre plus sur la condition de la femme médecin en général au Moyen Age que via une histoire particulière peu réaliste.

Un bel romanzo, ben raccontato e appassionante dove la lotta per l'affermazione di se stesse, soprattutto delle donne, è praticamente negata. Un'avventura che presenta la condizione femminile in diverse circostanze, incarnate dai diversi personaggi presenti.

Questo libro mi è stato regalato quindi mi ci sono dedicata con particolare attenzione perché vorrei sempre dare soddisfazione a chi prova a scegliere una lettura al posto mio.

Purtroppo, però, questo genere non mi si addice proprio anche perché, se devo essere sincera, non mi è del tutto chiaro di quale genere stiamo parlando: avventura? un pizzico. Storia romantica? brevi sprazzi con qualche timido e credo anche superfluo risvolto erotico. Storico? si, forse la parte più interessante anche se molto blanda e quasi di contorno (e non sono un’appassionata). E poi il ruolo della donna così ribelle e rivoluzionario descritto in copertina io non l’ho trovato, tutt’altro. Una donna costretta a fuggire, un personaggio quasi marginale, e tanti uomini, buoni o cattivi – poco importa – che riempiono l’intero libro. Nulla di nuovo.

Quasi 500 pagine che, soprattutto nella seconda metà, scorrono via rapidamente, ma che non mi hanno in alcun momento emozionato o incuriosito.

Di positivo? il fatto che quasi metà storia si svolge a Milano, la mia città. Una Milano del 1254 che non conosco ma che mi sono divertita ad immaginare seguendo le descrizioni dell’autrice.

Realmente me identifiquei com a protagonista e seus sentimentos de frustração em relação a sociedade em que estamos vivendo. Sua coragem e perseverança são realmente inspiradoras.
