So, I read this because it is the first English translation of an author I genuinely respect. How do I respect him if this is the first English edition of one of his books? Adaptations. In Japan Morimi’s work is very popular, and has been made into several movies and TV series. In fact, the recent adaptation of his novel “The Night is Short, Walk on Girl” is one of my favorite anime films in recent years As such, I was greatly looking forward to checking out an actual copy of one of his novels… ...more

2.5 stars. The narrator of the story is a 4th grade boy who is sure he is exceedingly smart. He takes notes on everything and loves to research problems. Everything is fine until a group of penguins show up in the middle of town. This started out really cute and then just got too surreal for me. I'm sure there was probably a deeper meaning in here somewhere, but I missed it. I wanted to love this, it has penguins after all -- but in the end it was just okay. ...more

I don't think I am going to leave a rating for this book right now because I don't honestly know how I feel about it. I couldn't tell if it felt surreal because I was reading it in Japanese or because the story dances with insanity. (Probably both)
I would not recommend it to most readers because it is repetitious, tedious, and bizarre.
When it breaks through these tendencies, however, there is a stunning amount of honesty and innocence that went into the smaller interactions between the character

If there's one thing I hate, it's a story about a kid who's too smart for everyone else in the room. Characters like that don't come off as inspirational to me. In real life they're charming — we need all the next-generation smarts we can get! — but on the page or screen they somehow just seem like insufferable little prats. It's not the intelligence I resent, but the smugness.

Penguin Highway is about a kid who is very smart indeed, and oh so very conscious of how smart he is, and the first rema

This feels like a book I have read before. (I haven't and I haven't seen the movie either!) But it feels familiar and like I was going home. However, it didn't start that way. The first few pages I was concerned about the voice of the story (that it would be quite childish) but that quickly passed.

The penguins sound adorable and very placid. And I was quite upset when they go eaten by the Jabberwocks.

"Even though I knew the earth was round, I felt like there was an end of the world that I could

Whew, that took a while.

A very heart whelming book about a young boy who knows a lot about a lot of things....but realizes he knows very little about the world. The characters were all around sweet and the plot was good.

The only thing that irritated me was the constant mention of breasts. It seemed like the author couldn't imagine a way a boy might bond with a girl without constantly thinking about her boobs. I'll admit sometimes it went so over the top it became absurd in a funny way. (Especial

I felt like the concept was there, but was losing me in every corner. I did enjoy the penguin mystery aspect of it. Aoyama is one of those intellectual on a high degree, that I've never read a character like that before. he was almost too smart to grasp onto and too mature for his age. He was however an interesting one.
The words 'breasts' and 'cumulonimbus' we used way too often. A little repetitive.
the last like 30 pages was quite confusing. not gonna lie.
I did enjoy some moments spread

It was cute fantasy. The curiosity and concentration to something kids are interested in are great, lovely and fantastic. What is more I know everyone should have this kind of feelings at least once in a childhood. Kids are lovely and awesome!

Penguins are my favorite animal, so a mystery about them sounded very intriguing to me. Before reading Penguin Highway, I had yet to read a book with a plot like this one. I didn't know what to expect when each new piece of information was revealed. I tried to figure the mystery out for myself but could only figure out a few things. I found the plot to be extremely interesting, especially how the author fit all the pieces together. The author knows how to spin an exciting tale that demands your ...more

Penguin Highway

This is a coming of age novel, a story of children facing reality bending mystery, and lots of talk about boobs.

Akireta Aoyama is a young boy with an analytical mind and an obsession with breasts. Not exactly in a prurient way, but in the confused way of a young boy on the cusp of puberty who knows he's interested, but not exactly why.

One day, his small Japanese town is set abuzz by the sudden appearance of penguins... And that is only the beginning of the weirdness.

I read this no

I love this book!

Aoyoma, a clever -maybe too clever- elementary school child, alongside his friends, makes the scientific discovery of a lifetime.

The film is a really 1 to 1 representation of the this book; however, I do believe there is a ton of great things that only this novel can capture in its entirety. One aspect that only the novel can convey is Aoyoma's exploration near 'the ends of the earth.' I also think the conversations between Aoyoma and Uchida are a bit more rich and detailed. I

This book was a treat.

In very Ghibli esc style, we follow three 4th graders just trying to be kids and figure things out mixed with the other worldly. Ponyo meets Totoro seems like a fitting mashup example. I was extremely skeptical about a 10 year old narrator, and yeah, he does get distracted about breasts a lot but Morimi spot on captures the childlike train of thought without being overbearing or boring.

Halfway through this book, I just could not put it down. It's been a while since I have

There are several things I like about reading Penguin Highway:
- how Aoyama is doing his own research
- the Sea and the alternate world
- the adventures of Aoyama and friends
- Penguin Highway

Unfortunately, I'm not so much fond of the protagonist, Aoyama. Perhaps because of how adult like he is for his age, how he always think of breasts, and how he does not play so much like his friends. Granted he is quite a clever kid and all but for his age there should be a balance. But anyways that is my opini

I was left unsatisfied by the ending.

Which is a shame because I genuinely enjoyed the characters and Morimi's writing style. Also, as a fan of 'The Eccentric Family' show, it was enjoyable to finally get a chance to read one of this author's works.

The novel is more focused on a boy growing up and falling in love rather than the bizarre plot happening around it, so there's that to consider. And I sort of understand the ending, but I just think that it left too many questions unanswered.

I still en

Reading this before watching the animation version is recommended. It elaborated on the background story of where penguins emerged from, including other fantasy side stories that implicitly tangled together.

It's quite hard to interpret the core of the story - minus one for that point. Maybe re-read this after a year might be a good idea to capture what's going on in the author's thought. However, after finished reading, I felt like a little void appeared in my thought. Meaning that I was already

Too much breasts (especially in the second half of the book, sometimes really awkward), but overall a really enjoyable story. I'd probably give it a 3* if I didn't read it in Japanese, hence the rating. It's very easy to read, so I'd recomment it to everyone who wants to start reading in Japanese (I'd say suitable for level N3). ...more
