Semi-surprisingly, I found Brillantes' pen piquing and yummy, but his seemingly overly dramatic, latently simplified (disguised in long elaborations of fictional details) is a vital downside. Naalala ko how Edel described one of Bienvenido Santos' stories: ""Isn't the long text in actuality a short narrative? ... a sentiment disguised as objective passion? Thus, we are confronted with the paperback image of a hero groaning in a musty room." Hence, it is hardly surprising that I gather lines like ...more
