Writer of the 'Norbert the Horse' series, Frogarty the Witch, Ernie, plus a whole host of other silly nonsense!

Here's a bit about him...

James Sutherland was born in Stoke-on-Trent, England, many, many, many years ago. So long ago, in fact, that he can't remember a single thing about it. The son of a musician, he moved around lots as a youngster, attending schools in the Isle of Man and Spain before returning to Stoke where he lurked until the age of 18. After going on to gain a French degree at Bangor University, North Wales, he toiled at a variety of regular office jobs before making a daring escape through a fire exit in order to concentrate on writing silly nonsense full-time. Happily married, James lives with his wife and daughter in a small but perfectly formed market town in Staffordshire. In his spare time, James enjoys playing his guitar, reading history books, and discussing the deep, philosophical mysteries of life with his goldfish, Tiffany.

I enjoy the Norbert books. The characters are well drawn, the humor gentle. It is like a farm version of the Vicar of Dibley. But man Sutherland, why did you have to that comment about women and gossip? C'mon man.

Who's a pretty boy then?

What a laugh! Mrs. Muckleton, the love of Farmer Finbar's life, turns up on his doorstep handing him a cone shaped object covered in a blanket. She is going to visit her sister for the night and having discovered that Finbar's arch-rival has a cat, she has decided that Finbar is the one to look after her precious budgerigar, George. "Who's a pretty boy, then?"

Colin, the cuckoo, who is on his way to visit his Aunt Valerie on the other side of the farmhouse takes a "breather" on the top of the barn roof. (If you have not read the three previous Norbert books, not only are you missing out but you will not know, until reading, that Colin is an old, overweight cuckoo who no longer flies south for the winter.) Colin hears someone telling him "Who's a pretty boy, then?" and is not only flattered but shocked to see a bird trapped in a cage. His thinking has been influenced by the latest book he has been reading, The Man in the Iron Mask.

Instead of flying onto Aunt Valerie's, Colin heads back to Norbert and Delilah, the two horses. After hearing his story, Delilah tells him he has to do something about rescuing George. Colin, having had a couple feather raising episodes in Farmer Finbar's house really does not want to return but Delilah can be very persuasive with fluttering her eyelashes.

In the meantime, Joe Baxter, watching all that had been going on from behind a hedge, sees Finbar going out to get more sausages. (Jasper, the cat ate the first lot when Mrs. Muckleton dropped George off! Yes Finbar has a cat but didn't tell Mrs. Muckleton.) Joe puts his plan into action, creeps into Finbar's house, grabs George and lets him loose outside.

You have got to buy the book to read how this hilarious tale unravels. Colin, once again gets "stuck" in Farmer Finbar's house. How do Norbert and Delilah come to the rescue and how in the world does Finbar find himself knocked unconscious by his front door 'exploding?!' Who brings George back into the house? You gotta read it :)

Our family LOVES these books. We have read all four Norbert books and our preschooler has now got "GARN" down to perfection! (GARN is Farmer Finbar's favorite word.) In order they are:

1. Norbert
2. Norbert's Summer Holiday
3. Christmas with Norbert
4. Norbert to the Rescue

Are there any cons? Depends on you the reader. This book is written by a British author so the spellings are British (Queen's English) - color is spelled colour etc. Certain phrases that you would not hear over here may seem offensive to you. If you are reading aloud, you can leave the "bad" words out. They are few & far between and here is what I mean:
"No power on God's earth would make me revisit that hellish place." Colin is talking about visiting Finbar's farmhouse.
"What the devil do you think you are doing?" (Devil in this context is used four times.)
"Good Lord!" he gasped (Used twice in the book.)

Saying all that this book is highly recommended and a definite 'keeper' in this house:)

Norbert, Colin, and Delilah are back together again.....And, giving Farmer Finbar heartburn once again. It seems that Finbar has been asked by his favorite lady friends to bird-sit. Between the bird "George", Old Joe Baxter (Finbar's competition for Mrs Mulchton), and Colin (not minding his own business), trouble is bound to occur, and it does.
Once again, a well-written story..the fourth in the Norbert series. I highly recommend for children of all ages.
