Rate this book
He's a vampire who has been locked away for a thousand years in a coffin, finally freed. But the world has changed drastically during that time, and there are so many things that he's not ready for. He hated being a vampire when it first happened, and he hates it now.

She's barely 18, a young girl with terminal cancer, once the height of popularity. Chosen by another vampire clan to keep them "updated" in the world, her blood infected and not tempting to them, she is brought into his household to teach him, page by page, the modern world and how to live despite her inevitable death. With the Christmas season approaching, she teaches him that there is more to life than just living. There's generosity and goodwill.

Although she has a boyfriend back home and he has no interest in living, slowly, a love and understanding blossoms between them that no one else can penetrate. A secret pact enfolds as her life force begins to fade.

I picked this one up for free the other day.

I can't believe that no one has mentioned that it's a thinly veiled Twilight Fanfic. (with a little Underworld to-boot)

The story was a bit ridiculous; A bunch of vamps hire a teenager to help them learn how to use Facebook? Yeah....that happened.

There was lots of fast-fowarding with no real relationship development.
One minute she's teaching him how to shop at the mall and the next she's in loooove.

Did I cry? No
Did I root for the h/h to become an item? Not really
Did I laugh? Definitely. (Probably for all of the wrong reasons)

The following review was originally posted on my book blog The Book Challengers.

Colour me surprised. If anyone had ever told me that I might actually somewhat enjoy a Twilight fanfic like this, I don't think I would have ever believed them. But lo and behold, it has now happened. I read a Twilight fanfic and even managed to enjoy parts of it.

I liked how Arthur had been in Torpor for so long and now actually needed help with understanding the contemporary world. I liked how it didn't come automatically. I liked that the actually had a happy ending (even if it somewhat miracle-like). I liked Arthur and Annalise, I liked to see them together and I liked seeing them become friends. I liked the thought behind all of this and thought that the premise was actually pretty great, the execution only needs a bit work as there were also a few things that I didn't quite like.

So, the things I didn't appreciate as much? Well, they include such things as basically every vampire in existence needs lessons on technology, on Facebook, on whatever from a dying 17-year-old girl. Facebook of all things! I didn't like the Twilight fanfic part where Annalise is living with a family of vampires where all of the "children" are actually married to one another. I didn't like the part where Annalise was in a relationship, in a romantical relationship with one of those married family members I just mentioned. And while I said that I liked seeing Arthur and Annalise become friends, I think a lot more page room would have been appreciated as the relationship progressed really fast and maybe the authors should have stuck with them being just friends...

Although the sequel is also freely available I don't think I actually want to give it a shot... First, because I think this story worked pretty well as a standalone and I don't need to read more about Annalise and Arthur and their kind of a relationship. Also, the second book's blurb kind of angered me already by saying that Arthur eradicated some bloodline 400 years ago when he was actually supposed to be out cold in that vampire coma of his. Either change the name or the timeline...

Anyway... kind of a feel-good YA holiday romance that you may give a shot if you're looking for something like that?

This is a really sweet tale of what can happen when two people let their guards down and take help offered by others. Arthur is a vampire who has been in Torpor, a deep coma-like sleep, for a thousand years. He is not just any vampire, however. He’s one of the Initials – part of the first vampire family, and he hates the fact that he is a vampire. He awakens to a world he doesn’t understand, and in which almost no one speaks his ancient language.

Annalise is fighting leukemia. During one hospitalization, while getting treatment she couldn’t afford, a doctor who happens to also be a vampire offered to hire her to keep his family up-to-date with current trends and society. He offered to pay for her cancer treatment and give her a place to live. She was perfect for his family because her “tainted” blood would not appeal to them. After getting over the initial shock that vampires actually do exist, she took them up on their offer and settled into a nice life. Her one stipulation was that she would not agree to be turned vampire when it was her time to die.

Gregory, Arthur’s brother, decides he wants Annalise to become Author’s culture teacher. Because Gregory is an Initial, Annalise’s adopted family cannot refuse (as much as they would like to). Their only concession was that Annalise would be returned to her family if her health required the care of her doctor/adoptive father. So, Annalise is whisked off to parts unfamiliar to a house with four powerful vampire brothers, and the one she is supposed to help cannot communicate with her. After 3 weeks of Arthur having a language teacher, Annalise is left on her own to teach him about modern society. Good thing he picked up on English quickly! Things begin slowly, but eventually they begin to enjoy each other’s company. Unfortunately Annalise’s health is failing, so she is on borrowed time.

The growth of Annalise and Arthur’s relationship is a slow progression from wariness to trust, from strangers to friends and perhaps something more. Arthur is confused by her refusal to heal herself by becoming a vampire, though, and worries that she’ll be gone from his life much too soon. The complicated relationship between Annalise and one of the vampires in her adopted family adds an interesting twist, as well. I really enjoyed this story. Arthur’s confusion about modern society felt genuine, and his reactions to situations aren’t always appropriate because he just doesn’t understand. Annalise’s enjoyment of his discomfort is good-natured and fun. My only complaint is that the ending seemed really abrupt. Things were wrapped up really quickly, with help coming from an unexpected source. I liked the rest of the story enough that this didn’t deter much from it and I definitely recommend it.

This was a very moving story that brought together two people who would seem to have nothing in common. I felt for Annalise from the beginning because she was such a fighter who never let her situation get her down. Her character was so clear from the beginning and once I started reading it was hard to stop. The other characters were also well defined and easy to know and like as individuals from the first one introduced to the last. The narrative flowed naturally from beginning to end and kept the story moving.

Arthur Bugresson has been asleep for 1000 years while his brothers have been conducting the business of the family. Only Brock, the youngest also went to sleep, and then only for 100 years. His family are Initials, the line from which all vampires have come to be and so he and his brothers are the King and princes of the vampire empire. When Arthur awakens suddenly he will need to be brought p to speed on the modern world and so his brother finds him a cultural tutor.

Annalise had been a popular girl who her friends did not realize was poor and mostly lived on her own when her parents went away on business. When she became ill with leukemia and was unable to pay for her treatment she was saved by an unlikely source, a vampire doctor. The doctor made a deal to treat her and pay her a salary for helping to bring his family into the 21st century. It was working well for them all. Then the King decided to take her away to help with his brother. Was she going to be able to help or would she die.

This was so much better than I had anticipated. I thought it was going to be some drivel about a teenager who is self centered or something. This was a sweet, sentimental, moving story about two people who seem to have nothing in common that find each other even in the face of tragedy. So worth the time!

Christmas Healing is a great vampire story. A different vampire story, romantic but sad also. I had some tears reading about Annalise and her battling cancer. Arthur was such a sweet vampire, waking after 1000 years to a modern society. But Annalise was able to help him learn so much and also to learn to love. A great love story.

What a endearing romance

This is not the typical paranormal romance I'm used to reading. Usually the ones I read have plenty of urban fantasy thrown in the mix. But, it was so good I couldn't let it go. The characters are interesting, the romance is heart-warming and the story is quite unique. I really enjoyed this book.

This is a touching story. There is a great love and tragedy. The will to go on through the depression pressing on the heart, and overcoming that depression. Seeing the light that is in life.

Christmas Healing Indeed!

I am not always fond of Christmas stories, since a good many of the ones I have read have been mawkish at best. The ending to this thrilled my heart, not entirely unexpected, of course, but the story is a gentle and sweet ( NOT saccharine) reminder that healing is a part of what Christmas is all about, and that healing comes in many forms, and many time frames...and that love, in and of itself, is itself a great healing. I LOVED this story!

A very interesting modern take on a vampire in the world. Everything is new to him and it's a sweet story as well. It did take awhile to get going but once there it took off. Read during the Corona Virus Pandemic of 2020.

Christmas Healing - the story of a human trying to save the life of a 3000 year old vampire (weird) - and shorter works.
Jenna and Trey (good love story)

The premise of this short reads like a soap opera. Dark Shadows, specifically.

Well, okay. Only kind of. It certainly takes off running with the whole "ancient vampire wakes and up and has no idea how the modern world works" idea.

The romance aspect is sweet - both of the main characters find a reason to continue living in each other. Watching Arthur try to make his way to see Annalise for Christmas is sad. It's like...it's like watching a puppy get rained on.

But here's the problem. It's incredibly difficult to take the book seriously when our first glimpse of Annalise involves her giving lessons in Facebook etiquette to a bunch of Twilight-esque vampires.

I'd also like to point out that, in the synopsis, it says, "Although she has a boyfriend back home...", which is a total lie. Unless it's referring to the overprotective vampire that she has a crush on. Did I mention that said overprotective vampire is married?

Nobody in the book seems to mind the fact that this married vampire is creeping on the main character. I've made it my job to care. Someone should.

The entire Christmas premise felt a bit forced - the story starts a few months before Christmas, but it's all Annalise can talk about. She uses it as a conversation starter with a vampire who's 1,000 years old. She has him write Christmas lists. There's the expected discussion about how Christmas is all commercialized now, and misses the point of the holiday.

It seems like there are more pressing matters for Arthur to learn about. We don't really see them talk about anything else modern, aside from cell phones and Skype. Who needs to know about the current political landscape, or civil rights? Look at the Christmas lights!

Eh. It's not a bad short. It's cute, and wonderfully cheesy. Just try not to think about it too much.

Annalise is barley 18 and she’s sick, really sick. She has fought Leukemia before but after going into remission three times it’s highly unlikely that she will beat the battle again. When she finds herself alone with no family and no way to pay for doctor or hospital bills she believes that her time is up and her battle is finally lost. When she’s approached by a vampire and asked to become a teacher for his “children” to help them become updated on the changes in the world it’s more than she could ever hope for. She finds herself in the company of people that she never knew existed but that she’s come to see as family.

Arthur has been asleep for a thousand years and when he finally awakes he’s lost, confused and very depressed. He didn’t want to be a vampire when he went to sleep and now that he’s awake again with all of the changes, he really isn’t happy. Everything has changed, nothing is the same, even the way that his family talks is different. His family hires Annalise to help Arthur understand the changes that have happened in the world. Both now in a place that don’t want to be, it’s the one thing that they have in common and the newfound friendship wasn’t something that they ever expected. But Annalise is running out of time, can she teach Arthur that today’s world isn’t all that bad before her time runs out?

This is a different spin on the vampire way of life. The can eat, drink, and be out in the sun so vampires blend right in with the world today with the exception of when they are behind on the current technology and ways of today’s life which is where Annalise came in. I found the actual story itself good however because it is only a novella some of it seems a little rushed at times but you still get enough of the main characters to fall in love with them.

I really enjoyed this book. The characters are well drawn without being sugar coated. Number one for me is that it is a complete book with a proper ending although part of an engaging series. I am so fed up with amazon saying that something is a complete book and then leaving me at a cliffhanger ending trying for force me to purchase the next instalment of a part-book.

I thought that the gradual trust and friendship between Arthur and Annalise was gently handled with no toe curling sex scenes . The hierarchy of the vampire world looked interesting and how it interacts with humans according to the rules, so I can imagine more details of that being explored in further books in the series. Given that the vampires were so organised, it didn't ring true that a dying teenager would be employed to teach one of the Initials (oldest vampires) to learn modern languages and culture. It would've been more expected for them to have a programme place to update vampires periodically. Then in the extreme case of Arthur, some of those qualified teachers would've been employed.

So apart from the obvious plot flaw, I enjoyed seeing Christmas through the eyes of a person who hadn't seen the commercialism now associated with it. I enjoyed the innocence of their friendship knowing that it could only be for a limited time, but suspecting from the title of the books that there would be a happy ending.

A bittersweet holiday novella that combines elements of paranormal, horror and romance within a holiday setting. Eighteen year old Annalise led a carefree life as a pretty, popular teen until she was diagnosed with leukemia. Unable to pay her mounting medical bills, she assumes the unusual post of teaching modern technology and cultural customs to a family of vampires. Dr. Hever, the head of the Hever clan becomes her physician. Her life is turned upside down once more when she is summoned by the King of the Vampires to teach his brother Arthur, who has just awakened from a 1000 year sleep. Annalise is terrified. She slowly falls in love with Arthur, but her illness proceeds rapidly to Stage IV cancer. When she is whisked away to the hospital, both she and Arthur are devastated.

The plot sounds far fetched, but the authors succeed in making it palatable, for the most part. Reader's emotions rise and fall as the conflict tears the two families apart. Annalise thought she was in love with Tony Hever; her fleeting life has been turned upside down by her deep feelings for Arthur. The ending is a surprise. Wonder what will happen in the second book of the series.

Recommended for young adult and adult audiences looking for an unusual but entertaining short holiday read.

This is a quick but very interesting read.
He's a vampire that has been in a deep sleep, of his choosing, for 1000 years. He is not happy about being a vampire or being awakened.
She's an 18 year old terminally ill young lady. So her blood is not a temptation to the vampires. So
when she is asked to "update" and help the newly awakened vampire fit into the modern world she is fearful and doesn't want to do it. But this is not a family she can say no to. As her health fades and he is learning to fit in other feelings and things grow stronger. When she becomes weak and more ill she has to return to her original host for treatment.
She teaches him the beauty in life, no matter what the life consists of. Will he be able to reach her in time? And will their love survive?

Very Nice...

This was a very nice short story for a Paranormal Christmas. The start was a little too "Twilighty" (can you say Cullens Clan?) & I almost didn't read it, but I am glad I did. Nice characters & storyline. The writing was very well done, as to evoke emotions from the reader. Okay, I got ferklumped a couple of times! I like books that do that. The ending was a bit short & I feel it could have been smoother, but I was okay with it. As stated before, a very nice little story.

This is a sweet story about a vampire waking up after hundreds of years of torpor to a world that he can not understand. Arthur's family hires Annaliese, a terminally ill teenager, to teach him about the modern world and culture.
Can two such different being fall in love? What about her illness? These questions are answered in this quick, easy read.
I think I liked the underlying feeling of hope best about this book.

A Christmas tearjerker

I wasn't sure what to expect from a vampire romance with a dying mortal at its core who had clearly made the decision not to become immortal...the end was incredibly sweet and appropriate and makes me want to read more from this author, especially if the stories deal with many of the same characters. These families have endeared themselves to me.

Christmas with vampires

Wasn't a bad little Christmas/vampire story. But as usual, we get the treat of the "Bella Swan phenomenon" --- every vampire is in love with main character. I'd still recommend it as a nice holiday read.
