Fazisi

Rate this book
This is the extraordinary story of Fazisi, a Russian boat of revolutionary design entered in the 1989/90 Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race. The American author tells how he became involved with the Fazisi, how his Russian co-skipper mysteriously committed suicide, how the boat was almost lost in a storm in the Southern Ocean and how, having arrived safely at Freemantle, Novak and his crew were told that Pepsi had withdrawn their sponsorship because of bad press in the USA. The book aims to offer a dramatic account of how the "Glasnost" boat managed to complete the toughest ocean race in the world.

A very interesting insight into the logistic and politics of international ocean racing.

Lots of struggles, breakages and financial difficulties along the way but in the end they did rather better than one might have expected!

An absolutely crazy story! Could have done with a bit more info on the actually sailing, but full of enough twists and last minute escapes to make it a hell of a tale
