All Better by Lisa Thiesing is a very short story for beginning readers. It is about a pig who goes about her day and keeps getting hurt. Every time she gets hurt she puts on a band aide and then feels all better (hence the title). She pricked her nose with a rose, fell in a hole, fell off her tricycle, fell out of a tree, and bumped her head going to bed. By the end of the day she has numerous band aides all over her body and she finally goes to sleep. In the morning she wakes up and checks to see if her boo boos went away. They did so she took off her band aides and jumped up and down on her bed. But of course this led to her newest boo boo at the beginning of the day. This book was made as the first step in children trying to read by themselves.

The text in this book is very limited. There is only about 5 words per page and they are in large print. The words are very short and easy to sound out if you know your basic sounds of letters. Since this book is made for beginner readers, the words are easy and rhyme to help guide the child to figure out the next sentence. A lot of the words used in this book also repeat, which is another good way to help kids learn how to read. About half of the sentences use explanation marks. If you are an adult reading this aloud, you would know to put extra power and emphasis on those sentences. They are always the sentences where the pig gets hurt so children might raise there voice to it out of fear or panic. Although the words are limited and simple, it is a great book for a child to start reading.

The pictures in this book help tell most of the story. As previously stated, the sentences are short and the words are repetitive. If someone was not able to read the words, they could glance at the picture to help them figure out what the sentence on that page stated. The pictures are very understandable. They do not hint at what is happening in the book, they directly are what is happening in the book. The pictures also have common day to day items that young children could recognize. For example there are pictures of a hill, tree, bathroom sink, and bed. All of these things young children usually see everyday so they can easily make the connection of the written word to saying it out loud. This book could have been all pictures and understood just as well without any words. The pictures did a very successful job narrating this short story.

My kids loved this book. "How can she be so clumsy?" they asked. They thought this was a very funny story. This is a golden books getting started Road to Reading, it uses easy words, fun rhymes, and big print.
