Well they actually did it. Actually they did a lot of stuff differently with this book. 1) They actually jammed a full two hour movie into 24 pages and it shows a little. 2) And they didn't use any stock images, or and images ripped out of the movie. (Cover excluded) I'm impressed they actually put some effort into this book. COVER Obviously each character is stock images for promotional stuff and used in making the characters for the movie. They aren't nearly as cheaply done as other books. It looks like they put more thought into this cover than say Gift on the Night Fury. If there was a part that did annoy me it would be Meatlug. (Somehow he doesn't look right compared to other images of him.) INTERIOR (ART) The images in this book are amazing. I don't know why but Hiccup seems off on some of the drawings. (With that being said I don't know if that's just me or if I'm looking into it too much.) One thing I did notice that might have been a mistake on the artist behalf is that Toothless is flying all by himself during the Alpha war. I also love how they literally captured Gobber's expression from the baby dragon flying moment in this book. A GREAT little detail. Also When Valka is revealed the art is amazing between flames and dragons. (In the movie this part always seemed to creep me out. (I don't know why.))
(STORY) Interestingly enough I can't believe I'm saying this again in such a short amount of time. Where the pictures look better the story itself does falter a little but. (Not extremely but a little.) Keeping in mind that you are cramming an entire movie into 24 pages you have to take away certain parts. (That's a given.(I get why they removed Stoick's death.(It's little too drastic for something so short.))) One detail I would have added is that baby dragons don't listen to Alpha's a couple pages before as well to be seen as a foreshadowing.
This is a short book but it's more than just a 'beginning' book. Made more for in the middle readers those that are beyond beginning but not quite ready for chapter books either. I haven't seen the movie so can't say if it goes hand in hand word for word or not. But my 4 year old granddaughter listened and watched the illustrations as I read it to her.
