A story that teaches young readers how to deal with trauma and coping with all the resultant issues – the pain of recovery, lowered self-esteem, and relationships is waiting within the pages of Belle and Chloe: Reflections in the Mirror.

Belle and Chloe are twins and also best friends. They play together, go to school together, and even have matching dogs, Muffin and Waffles. Both girls also love helping their mother make dinner, and that’s where our story begins....

One night, while Belle was helping her mother cook dinner, she reached for the hot pot of soup that was on the stove. The stove tipped forward, and the hot soup spilled all over Belle. The heat from the hot soup caused Belle to cry out in pain. Her mother acted swiftly, calling 911 and wrapping her daughter in a sheet. Belle was rushed to the hospital, where she was assessed and found to have third-degree burns over the upper parts of her body. Belle’s parents were told that their daughter would need to stay at the hospital for a few months and would also need numerous surgeries.
Eventually, Belle was able to come home from the hospital. She had gone through countless painful treatments, but the transition back to home life wasn’t easy. Belle needed lots of help from her mother, which made Chloe feel forgotten; Belle was afraid to be alone, she didn't want to go to the bathroom by herself, and she was even hesitant to leave her room; and then there were the nightmares...would they ever stop?

The author of Belle and Chloe: Reflections in the Mirror, Dr. Isabela Sardas, is a licensed clinical psychologist with many years of experience treating psychiatric disorders in youngsters. Her expertise shines through on the pages of this story where the reader sees Belle struggle with the various issues she must deal with - not just as her painful burns are treated, but also after she has returned home. Beyond the pain of the burns, Belle doesn’t want to look at her burns when the bandages are removed, and later, she’s convinced that her scars make her different. These are all real issues that both children and their parents may struggle with and they are discussed in a sensitive way so that readers will better understand what they may face. Through the author's expertise in presenting a relatable story, children who may be struggling with issues surrounding trauma will see themselves in the struggles of Belle and understand that they are not alone. In the story, Belle and her family go to a therapist and through their experience, we can see that it's not a scary thing but rather a very helpful activity to help begin the process of healing. These and so many other things are discussed in Belle and Chloe: Reflections in the Mirror, and it's definitely a book you should consider if a child you know is dealing with similar issues.

Quill says: Belle and Chloe: Reflections in the Mirror is a sensitive, caring story to help both children and their caregivers work through the many challenges that come with trauma. It is an excellent book to read together and is highly recommended to help children work through the many issues they face after a serious injury.

Belle and Chloe: Reflections in the Mirror” by Isabela Sardas, Ph.D. is a beautiful children’s picture book about injury and recovery. But also about the bond of twin sisters that transcends adversity. Twins Belle and Chloe are never far apart. Being twins, they do everything together, but Belle is burned by a pan of boiling hot soup in a tragic accident. This leaves her with third-degree burns on various parts of her body. She must also spend several weeks in the hospital to undergo treatment, and then again later for surgery to minimize her scars.

Sardas has created a loving book about trauma and recovery that should be read by everyone, regardless of if they or their child has suffered an injury. This story doesn’t sugar-coat anything, but neither does it exploit or try to frighten. It’s reality. So many children suffer burns, and the fact that it happens to this family and to these twins puts a unique and emotional slant to the story. Children will read about the accident, the hospital, and the aftermath–meaning how it affects Belle and Chloe, from worry to nightmares, to self-esteem to healing, both psychological and physical.

There is so much poignancy, heart, and realism packed into these 58 pages, it’s amazing. The artwork takes the story to another level and will make you want to cherish this book and share it for years to come. As a former social worker, one of the things I appreciate most about this book is that the wise author shows how the family is affected as a whole, and how it lends support to Belle, Chloe, and the entire situation.

This wonderful little book is encouraging and therapeutic, but also sweet and heartwarming, especially the relationship between the twins. The author has captured the feelings of all family members, from guilt to helplessness. In today’s world, where appearances can mean everything, and so many rely on them for their self-worth and happiness, this children’s book can teach all of us the valuable lesson of accepting ourselves and others regardless of our looks. For a deep, moving story about overcoming trauma and moving on the path of recovery, “Belle and Chloe: Reflections in the Mirror” by Isabela Sardas is a must-read.

Belle and Chloe are twin sisters who are very much alike in many ways. They always play together, they have the same friends, and they look very similar. One day, an accident in the kitchen causes Belle to get burned, and she needs to go to the hospital. After the accident, Belle's entire life changes. She has to stay at the hospital to get better while Chloe continues to go to school. Chloe starts to feel a bit forgotten because their parents are spending most of their time taking care of Belle. When Belle comes home from the hospital, Chloe is happy to see her and is excited for them to start spending time together again. But Belle feels very different from Chloe now, and the sisters start to drift apart. Belle feels very insecure about the scars she has from the accident, and she starts to pull away from everything she loved before, such as hanging out with friends. Will Belle be able to gain confidence again and regain her connection with Chloe?

Opinion:
Overall, I enjoyed reading this book. I think that this book is a great way for readers to gain insight into how it can feel when something big happens in your life that you cannot control. Throughout the story, one can see the different emotions Belle deals with after the accident and how she deals with the changes in her life. For example, we can see how she feels frustrated at how different her life is now but still continues to persevere. The colorful images in the story allowed you to visually see Belle's emotions throughout the story. I also liked how the author started off by showing what Belle and Chloe's life was like before the accident and how they were very happy. Then, at the end of the story the author showed how even though their life was now very different, they were able to gain that happiness back with the help of family support and therapy. This story was very inspiring to read and teaches a message about the importance of staying strong when unfortunate things happen. Overall, I think that this is a great book that readers of all ages will benefit from reading.

A wonderfully written and illustrated book for children. Belle and Chloe are twin sisters. One day, an accident with a pot of boiling hot soup upturns on Belle. Her mother quickly calls for help and Belle lands in the hospital. Belle has several burns on her forehead, arms and legs, and other places that were third-degree. She would to have a three-month stay in the hospital. Dressings were changed, and operations were done.

It was a difficult experience but her relationship with her sister deepened and she was fortunate to have much love, understanding, and support from her family. Belle had to deal with the scars. She withdrew and had counseling which helped her deal with being scarred.

This is a wonderful story, showing a little girl dealing with a big change in her life and the positive approaches that her family took. I love this book! I hope that it is in all children's libraries.

This book is a tale of trauma as told by a child severely burnt by an accidental kitchen mishap. Belle and Chloe are inseparable twins until the accident sets them apart. Not only is Belle disfigured and ostracized from her friends, but the entire family also learns to cope with endless hospital stays, operations and the remaking of Belle's life as well as their own. Drawn from the author's own life experience, the story is straightforward about the emotional and physical aspects of healing. More importantly, it shows the role that every person needs to be aware of to help those who are different to feel accepted and not alone.

I highly recommend this book for everyone.

This story handles a tragic burn accident delicately, sharing feelings from both sisters. I do believe these types of books are so necessarily, both for those who have personally experienced this kind of trauma and for those who come into contact with others who have. I liked the story but felt the illustrations were lacking and basic.

This book invoked relatable feelings, experiences, and memories. After reading, I looked back at my life and reflected on how lucky I am to not be in a scary situation. I loved how Belle embraced her new beauty and was excited when she and Chloe finally reconnected after the accident.
