This is really 290 page sales flyer for upgrading to SQL Server 2012. Rather than an Introduction to Microsoft SQL Server 2012 it is an more an introduction to the release of SQL Server 2012 and the changes involved. It describes changes and improvements in the new version and useless cursory information on how to use them. I say it is useless, because nobody would keep this book on their shelf as a reference.
I got this book in order to lay a foundation on which to continue learning about this new version, and for that it was okay.. barely.

This is the release notes that you wished companies published: this is an overview of most of the changes between SQL Server 2008R2 and SQL Server 2012. The book is conveniently divided in to two sections: DBA/Developers and Analysts. Depending on your job, one half is going to be more interesting than the other, but there is definitely enough content here to pique ones interest.

This book fails utterly to introduce SQL Server 2012. This book describes how to use the new features of SQL Server 2012. It does not describe what the new features are or why they are useful, nor does it even mention any feature that isn't new. Do not read this book.

A great basic introduction to the SQL Server platform and its components.
Unfortunately a huge majority of the examples are on the GUI. I would like the examples to be on the GUI and through the API.
I general the book is recommended as a quick introduction to the latest version of SQL Server.

Good stuff in the Administration section with practical examples and scenarios.
Mostly marketing stuff in the BI Section. Introduced features with not much detail on how to actually get them implemented.

This book is only useful if you know everything that the previous version of SQL Server did. I got a basic overview of the changes. But it's not too helpful unless you have mastered the concepts in teh previous versions.
