The best quote about Obstacles was once quoted by the French playwright and actor, who is considered one of the greatest masters of comedy in Western literature- Jean-Baptiste Poquelin "Molière",
“The greater the obstacle, the more glory in overcoming it.”

Similarly, in the debut book, Obstacles by an American author, named, Christopher Reardon, obstacles are the one thing that keeps the primary character, Alcott, who is a doctor, from saving a nine-year old's life. But his obstacles are painful

I have given this book four stars because the plot is intriguing. Although the writing style is good, it does need some attention and I'm not sure if all rings true with the main character. There are extremes of emotion, to such an extent that I wonder if the stress of which wouldn't put anyone into an early grave.

However, it was a good, interesting read, the idea thought-provoking and clever, delving into the science - or myth - of how to cheat death.

The fantastic adventures in the story take the reader first-hand into the mind of determined but quivering hero. We live each moment of his challenges--each worse than the last when he arrives in an unknown place with sic other contestants--all with the same aim of saving the life of someone they care about. The plot carried me away to a reality where every normal expectation is overturned and only raw courage will suffice.

A review has been long due for this book; I actually read it last year, but unfortunately at that time school got in the way, so I never had the chance to voice my thoughts on Obstacles.

It was a short read, and a fast-paced one. I finished it in a matter of hours.

What a marvelous book to immerse yourself into! I literally finished this book in a matter of hours, because I couldn’t put it down! Chris Reardon you’ve just won yourself a new fan. Those, whom have followed me since the beginning, know that I can never turn down a YA Fantasy. I have read TONS, but by far this is the most refreshing. The plot, the characters, the overall purpose was enthralling. And, is that cover not gorgeous? I was immediately attracted.

Alcott is a doctor that has wrapped himself in fears. When he has to look after a young dying patient, Gari, his fears wrap him even tighter. The more Alcott is around Gari, the more he starts connecting. It is just frustrating that nothing can be done to save Gari, he is not even expected to make it a year.

The Fear of Death Can Sometimes Be Worse Than Death Itself!

“Obstacles” is the story of a 9-year-old boy who is dying. Dr. Alcott monitors his health and creates an environment of support, tranquility, and care for him until the end. Dr. Alcott is terribly afraid of death and the unknown and can't bear the thought of Gari dying. Obstacles is a truly different book. It seems to be part novel, part fantasy, part adventure novel and part parable. It’s this unusual combination of elements together with its very different premise that makes it a compelling read.

Just imagine if you had the power to change someone’s life. But, in order to do so you had to forfeit your own. Would you do it? I’m not sure I would. It is complicated even more by the fact that in order to make the ultimate sacrifice you had to pass a series of tria

I’ve just read Chris Reardon’s debut novel, Obstacles. In this action-filled fantasy, a doctor, Alcott is tasked with the care of a boy named Gari. Gari has just days to live and in order to save his charge, Alcott agrees to exchange his life for the child’s. After summoning a Goddess by using a spell from an ancient book and agreeing to her terms, he is taken to another world where he must compete in the Obstacles. Alcott must pass three of the obstacles if Gari’s life is to be spared.

Dr. Alcott faces the loss of a young patient, a vivacious boy whom he believes shouldn't die. When given the opportunity to change the young man's fate, he embarks on a test of endurance that challenges him on levels he's never achieved before. As a doctor suffering from night terrors, he has no clue just how frightening his decision to beat death really is.

I really enjoyed reading Obstacles, not only was it a novel about a man who would do absolutely anything to help a young boy have his cancer reversed but it was full of adventure, strange beings and lots of action and there was no romance in sight which makes a great change.

By the end of the book you believe that anything is possible if you try hard enough which Alcott did.

The characters were well developed I liked them all, well until things were turned on their head and I started cursing them

It was the story line that led me to this book. I was intrigued by the idea of a doctor trying to cheat death for his patient. It is action packed with the characters experiencing a wide range of challenges that draw you on to the next chapter. One of those 'just a few more pages' books, as your clock tells you it is time to get some sleep! The author's style is rather intense as everything happens to the maximum level, which can be a bit exhausting. It would have benefited from a change of pace ...more

The whole thing was so sweet.
I have got nothing to say, but a guy risking so much (even his life) in a supernatural game to save the life of a little kid, that touched my heart.

And I know this review cannot be really long because I do not have many to say and I do not want to repeat my ideas, but this book is a must-read for those who want a Supernatural Story about Humanity.

Damn, that's sure a rare thing.

When you are given a chance to save a life, how far are you willing to go to prevent death? For Obstacles, Alcott is given a rare opportunity to save the life of a patient, and he takes it willingly.

This fantasy story is interesting as well as exciting. It also shows that there are people who are always choosing to do something good and kind.

Book Review- Obstacles by Christopher Michael Reardon

Dr. Alcott is now a live-in doctor caring for a young boy named Gari. Dr. Alcott is prone to night terrors and fears death. One night when he goes to visit the hospital he has worked at in the past, he stops to talk to a well known patient named Mashilto. I think this was a great first novel for Chris Reardon. He is a talented author with a bright future ahead of him.

Then another patient steps into the picture and offers the doctor an ancient tome. Inside is a possible solution to saving the dying young boy. This imaginative journey began with a doctors exasperation at his inability to save the life of one of his patients, a child named Gari. Throw in an eccentric elderly patient who claims to be able to bring back the dead, and I was hooked. From the minute Dr. Alcott took the mystical book in his possession, Chris Reardon penned and interesting and gripping world that is everything a fantasy should be. We have real characters facing great odd in pursuit of a noble cause. It's the kind of story tha ...more

The story follows Alcott, a live in doctor for the terminally ill Gari, who wishes he could save the young boy's life. Firstly I'd like to say how gorgeous the cover is for this book. I mean really? It's ridiculously beautiful, I love, love, love it!

Secondly, the plot for this novel is astounding and like nothing I've ever came across before. A doctor bonds with his child patient, and is given a book by a dying man that allegedly has the power to save a life. Using this book he summons a goddess, who promises that if he succeeds at dangerous obstacles, the child will live.

Alcott is a doctor providing live-in care for a terminally ill boy to whom he forms a deep attachment. When he is given the opportunity to save the boy's life in exchange for his own, he accepts and is then whisked to a fantasy realm where he and others in his same situation must pass a certain number of challenges to earn the right to perform the life exchange. The plot is more or less what you'd expect, though I was pleasantly surprised by a couple of the twists.
