Not A Love

When I first picked up this book after reading the reviews I thought ok I’ll give it a go. Sadly nothing jumped off the page at me. For me even though it was well written and the characters did have depth it just felt that the first half was going around in circles until something happened. It become frustrating and I was close to giving up. I kept ending but sadly the ending was for me completely predictable. I wish I could have enjoyed it more.

Truth or Dare is a complex novel that spans over the lives of two friends and their journey towards love.

Kate has had it bad for her best friend Rosie's brother, Mickey, since she was 11. Tired of waiting for Mickey to reciprocate his feelings for her, Kate decides it's time to move on. She leads a very controlled life, unlike Rosie who lives for the moment. Kate suffers from anorexia and Rosie takes any opportunity to hook up with a man wherever she can. Upon meeting Declan O’Brien, Kate believ

I had heard about Truth or Dare well before it came out. A few years back, I met Laura who told me that most readers were, apparently, 'stumped' as to how to classify the book. Having read it, I can see what they mean.

Truth of Dare is a dark and intricate novel. The main character Kate is troubled and, frankly, messed up. All the characters have complicated pasts. The only one from a conventional background is Josh, and even he has a nut job sister.

The story is complex and well woven. The charac

I am still wondering how I feel about this book. As I read it I found almost all the characters unsympathetic and seriously flawed. Even the main protagonist, Kate, is deceitful and made moral decisions that I goggled at. Her best friend Rosie is horrendously promiscuous and depicted as very shallow. Declan's sister is unbelievably nasty. The friends' parents and backgrounds are sad and difficult. There are themes of alcoholism and anorexia, rape and deceit. I wondered if I could continue to rea ...more

Truth or Dare? Is a love story spanning several years. However, it's not a soft romance. It deals with darker issues that are not always tackled in this genre. The characters, like every day people, have many layers and these are gradually deconstructed, examined and reconstructed as the story progresses. By the end of the book, you feel as if you really know the characters as their psyches are delved into and their actions and reactions to their circumstances are played out.

There is a twist tow

This was a really unusual story and at first, I found it a bit difficult to settle into because some of the themes are very hard-hitting. It's not a typical romance therefore, although it still revolves around relationships and the mess people often make of them. The characters are strongly drawn and some of them are not likeable. The story is very complex and keeps you guessing right till the very last minute. In the end, I was pleased at the resolution to the story and I thought the author did ...more

Truth or Dare is a complex, well-written story that drew me in from the beginning. It doesn't easily fit into the usual genre definitions which makes it an interesting read. Kate is a troubled woman who's loved her friend Mickey since they were children but realizes it's time she let go although Mickey might not agree. Meeting the charming Declan is the catalyst but he's a man with his own problems which will affect their growing relationship. Nobody comes to the story unencumbered, exactly as i ...more

Moral dilemmas and difficult subject matter dealt with well by the author. Tense and with unforeseen twists, Truth or Dare? is for those who like a hard hitting story. Looking forward to reading the rest of the Chesil Beach series.

Excellent book, an enjoyable read. Engaging yet flawed characters who really draw you in. Not a soft romance by any means. I thoroughly recommend it.

Possessing little in the way of domestic skills, and with an insatiable hunger to write, Laura E. James found a much better use than cooking, for the family kitchen. Tucked neatly in one corner is her very small, but very tidy desk from where she produces issue-driven romantic novels, short stories, and flash fiction. She considers her legendary affair with stationery, the urge to smell new books, ...more
