THE JOB: PROTECT A RAGTAG CREW OF GORGEOUS ROLLER DERBY GIRLS FROM A STALKER. WHAT COULD GO WRONG?
"Dev is at it again. Put the coffee on, and plan to stay up late, this is a real page turner." -The Irish Gazette
Dysfunctional, bumbling, crazy babe-magnet Dev Haskell, Private Investigator, has just landed the job of a lifetime. He'll be the envy of every guy with a heartbeat: Dev is hired to provide security for a team of beautiful English roller derby stars (with stage names like Harlotte Davidson and Helen Killer). Though he'd rather be standing guard in the shower room, he finds himself in a world of trouble when he's mistaken for the stalker-turned-killer he's been tracking.
With an attorney who drinks too much and a team of females ready to kill him, Dev must prove his innocence, all the while finding the real killer and protecting himself against the wiles of yet another irresistible and dangerous woman.
I was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, I still live there as well as in Dublin, Ireland. I've been a soldier, freelance journalist, tended bar, sold designer cakes, owned a painting and decorating company along with a number of other schemes and scams. If that doesn't offend you I also play bagpipes with the Brian Boru Irish Pipe Band. All my books stand alone, read them in whatever order you wish. They are filled with the sort of oddballs we are all curious about, but wisely, prefer to keep at a distance. None of my characters will be saving the world from terrorism, international banking conspiracies or coups to take over the government. Rather, they inhabit a world just below the surface of polite society, characters with one foot on either side of the law. The circumstances they find themselves in are usually due to bad decisions, but bad decisions lead to interesting stories. They serve not so much as an example but as a warning to us all. Thanks for taking the time, happy reading.
I was gifted on e-copy in exchange for my honest review.
This is one, of several, Dev Haskell novels. Dev is a private investigator that has a way with the ladies and getting into crazy situations. He is a guy you will either love, or love to hate. In this novel, he is hired to watch over a Roller Derby team, but mainly the star, Harlotte Davidson. She has received several strange, threatening, gifts. While trying to put a finger on who could be doing this, Dev finds himself becoming the suspect. This situation may be even too hard for Dev to talk himself out of. Will Dev be able to free himself and find the real suspect, or go down for the crime that he was hired to take care of? Another great suspense thriller by this author.
I guess I downloaded this Kindle book back in the day when I (and most of America) was really into Roller Derby. Wanted to be supportive of a new author, wanted to read about Roller Girls...ya know. But I finally got to it this past week and was sorely disappointed. It's only a little about Derby. It's mostly about an ass of a PI who is just as much misogynist as he is alcoholic. Also the plot is super predictable. Ah well. Trying to support lesser-known authors, but sometimes it doesn't work out.
I received this book in exchange for a honest review. Bombshell by Mike Faricy
This is the second book I have read by this author. Both of the books are humorous mysteries to a T. I love both the books by this author. They are hilarious and the character Dev never ceases to amaze me with his wrong place at the wrong time. I love Dev and the author Mike did another wonderful job delivering another hit!! I just adore his detective books. Devlin Haskel is a man with a great heart that has trouble with women and a penchant for trouble. It just happens to land on him in a big heap. Dev always manages to get out by the skin of his nails. I am definitely going to buy the ones I haven't read and see what other weird scenarios Dev lands in. I look forward to more by this author and this series is one I will surely recommend to my friends.
Dev takes his date Carol to a bar and while getting a drink meets Justine who inquires about his Detective Service. He is then trust into the world of female roller derby. Justine just so happens to be "Spankie" and is intrigued by the information. He takes the job and learns that the England team the Hustlers famous player is being stalked by weirdo that puts middle fingers in weird places like on the outside of a door. He and Jimmy work together try to figure the best course of action regarding the stalker. While on the job, an incident happens leaving Dev in cuffs and accused of something that was a misunderstanding. After that the stalker is bound and determined to blame Dev for the incidents against the famous player. Will Dev figure out the stalker? Will he be put in jail for good? Find out in the amazing and delightful tale!! I give this book a 5 star review. I couldn't put it down once I started. I laughed at loud at Dev went through and some of the things he says.
Not for me Inept writing. Loaded with every type of editing error possible. Does have sex scenes and reviews say it's 'Man Porn' So a man would probably enjoy this if they can get around all the bad editing. I would probably have read it if it wasn't so badly written.
As usual Dev is in the wrong place at the wrong time and finds himself accused of some pretty heinous crimes against the visiting English roller derby team. But as usual he and the local police are able to straighten everything out in the end.
Not a terrible plot (predictable, but not terrible), but REALLY terrible writing. Grammatical, punctuation, and spelling errors made this really hard to finish.
It's been three years since I've dipped my toe in the Devlin Haskell universe. There are currently 25+ books in this series, and I found it easy to slip back into the 21st century tech noir that are so much a part of the appeal. It has been suggested that fans of Stephanie Plum will enjoy these books… I concur.
The recurring theme in the life of Dev Haskell is 'wrong time, wrong place.' He is a private investigator with a fondness for beer and women… lots of women. Heidi Bauer seems to be his go to squeeze when all else fails. Detective Manning and Haskell seem to have a double-sided relationship where Manning alternately arrests Dev and asks for his help. Let's not forget his disheveled lawyer Louie Laufen.
In BOMBSHELL, our hero gets picked up in a noisy bar by a sassy girl and winds up as security for an upcoming roller derby match between the Bombshells the local St. Paul team, and the Hasting Hustlers imported from the UK. As always, the big question is 'what could go wrong' watching over a bevy of gorgeous derby girls? The answer is, of course, everything!
Mike Faricy is very good at describing the characters throughout the book… everyone except Devlin Haskell. He leaves the looks of the lothario PI to your imagination. His success with women, albeit usually short lived, seems to indicate he is far from being a toad, yet we know nothing about his height, weight, hair or eye color. An interesting portrayal to be sure.
BOMBSHELL, like the first three books in the series, is a very fast read. The action keeps you turning the pages, and the mayhem that is the life of Devlin Haskell will make you shake your head and laugh aloud.
About the time we moved away from the Texas City, Tx., area, a group of young women started up a roller derby rink and games in the old K-Mart building in town. I don't know if they are still operating, but I thought I'd learn a little more about the sport. The emphasis is on 'little.'
Dev Haskell is a promiscuous private eye in St. Paul. He has a love/hate relationship with Detective Manning. The author took poetic license with his depiction of the police. My husband and I are COPS (Citizens on Patrol) with the police, and the scenes depicted would get them fired. Just sayin'.
The story moved fast and kept the reader's attention. Period. Otherwise, the depiction of a testosterone-infused PI was ho-hum. Overall score = 3.5 stars.
Definitely the perfect name for this book and the action in it!
What is going on for Dev Haskell Private Investigator and his life in this book? Will he find a another love interest or 2? Will he stay out of trouble with the law or will his new friend Louie the former public defender once again be getting more business? Who or what is a Bombshell and why do they want anything to do with Dev? All this questions are answered when you read this next book in the series and maybe the next book we will see if anything continues happens with some of those new friendships he has been making with the police, like Detective Manning, Officer Trang, and others including SWATT and Captain Elkers.
Dev’s date ditches him for a French guy but he meets a girl who is into roller derby. Dev gets a security deal for the British team’s star that someone is harassing her with cut off fingers. The next thing he knows he’s charged with assault on the roller derby player Emma who assaulted him first. Everyone in the city hates him because of this. He just keeps getting into trouble but it is fun trying to figure out what stupid thing he will do next.
I have never read any books in this series. However, it can definitely be read as a stand alone. The story covers a roller derby team from London. Dev Haskell is a private investigator asked to help with some mysterious things that are happening to one of the ladies on the team from London. However, he becomes a prime suspect. Can Dev help solve the crime before he is found guilty of the crimes?
Mike Faricy has captured the true essence of the ' Dime Store Detective Novel.' His character Dev Haskell may be a little to irreverent for some, and his treatment of the opposite sex will offend many. His plot lines are good and I love his character descriptions. This is my first Dev Haskell novel, but I definitely plan of reading more. Nice job Mike...
It had been a while since I’d read my last Dev Haskell story. I’d forgotten how much fun they are. A genial main character surrounded by a cast of people who could be interesting enough to be in their own stories. I’m sure I have more of these in my KU library. BTW, the title refers to Rollerderby. A group of crazies all on their own.
Bleh. Don't waste your time (or money). Not funny. Not interesting. Very formulaic. Boring. Forced myself to finish it for the sake of my Reading Challenge. I would have quit long before the half way point, otherwise.
This is the 4th book in the Dev Haskell series that i have read. Perhaps not the best one but still good. You may not have to read these in order, but I would, and will continue. It's fast, fun reading.
Once again, Dev gets involved in a caper. He provided security for roller rink ladies. Unfortunately, one of the ladies is murdered. Cops think Dev is involved. More jail time, and sexual escapades.
I purchased Bombshell after reading the first three Dev Haskell books. The problem is that the digital version of book four is actually one of the stores from the first three books. Help me out here will you. Either tell me how to actually get book 4 of refund me my money.
I wish you would just read this book yourselves and write your own review on this novel yourself and I really enjoyed reading this book very much so . Shelley MA
This book was a little crazy but funny and I enjoyed reading it. I think Dev Haskell has a black cloud over his head, but he is good at dealing with it.
These books are entertaining, nothing too serious or tragic, which I enjoy reading before bed. I have read this author before and reading another one now
