Out of Hollow Water

Out of Hollow Water is an exercise in the fantastical and intensely personal, plumbing hidden depths both real and imagined. “... a shadow smeared dream-cycle rife with haunting symbolism...” — The AV Club “An unsettling and haunting debut.”— Publishers Weekly “Smart, chilling, viscerally disturbing, but never showy or cruel.” — Julia Gfrörer, author of Black is the Color and Laid Waste Out of Hollow Water , the debut book by Anna Bongiovanni, is an exercise in the fantastical and intensely personal, plumbing hidden depths both real and imagined. It is a work that wanders into the dark recesses of the female experience, where the only escape is through cathartic release, taking myriad forms. Anna Bongiovanni is a cartoonist who spends most of their time drawing comics about two best friends on Autostraddle.com, a queer lifestyle website. Their comics tend to center around queer themes, ideas, and characters and can be either silly, educational, or honest and emotional, sometimes all at once.

An utterly fascinating book. Through three vague, disturbing vignettes, Bongiovanni details the experience and aftermath of sexual assault. The stories are incredibly dark and unsettling, whilst the beautifully sketchy artwork makes the experience feel almost intimate--adding to the effect. This book is slim, but contains an incredible amount of power between its pages.

Like I wrote in my blurb, this book is haunting, disturbing, breathtaking and beautiful. It's a book that will stay with you.
