"In Sickness and in Mental Health" is a transparent journey through mental illness and the trials and tribulations on the road back to health. Author Diane Mintz shares her initial terrifying experience with bipolar disorder and how a symptom of the disorder itself, coupled with various addictions, impeded her recovery for a decade.
Diane discloses her soul which ultimately leads her to the balanced and abundant life she has enjoyed for over twenty-five years. Early in her recovery she meets her future husband and draws on her experience, strength, and hope to help him recover from an even more complicated illness called schizoaffective disorder. Throughout their marriage, Diane gains insight into what very few people understand.
A story of deep, abiding love, this book reveals powerful lessons about the road to recovery, how to have healthy, meaningful relationships, and especially what it takes to have an extraordinary marriage. Together for over twenty years, this couple has defied the odds. They enjoy each other, their two children and their thriving business.
"In Sickness and in Mental Health" provides genuine hope to those who are affected by mental illness that a healthy, happy life is possible.
Diane Mintz knows mental illness inside and out. Her story is a confessional narrative that takes the reader on a faith journey from addiction to bipolar to a measure of healing. Not only does she walk the road of recovery herself, but she travels it with her partner in marriage. She is practical without sounding preachy and offers hope for those whose minds betray us. This book goes a long way to eradicating stigma with stories.
Very eye opening and informative about what it really can be like to live with a mental illness. Diane is completely transparent about her experiences. A must read especially for anyone with a person with mental illness in their lives. It will give you some insight into what they are dealing with. It's choppy in spots, but read it for the content not the quality of the writing.
Diane spoke to a group of us at work and I was very impressed with her honesty. Now, reading her book, I am enjoying a more in-depth version of her story.
