George and Matilda Mouse get married and start a new life in the city, with some surprises along the way. I love the clever little worlds of books like these (Brambly Hedge and The Tale of Two Bad Mice) and George's carrot-harvesting machine is the stuff dreams are made of. I am quite sure Buchanan raided my imagination for the rock garden at the end. I could stare at that illustration for hours!

Oddly, however, is the lack of dialogue--no one speaks until the end of the book! (And it's not a special reveal, either.) But I liked the gentle narrative all the same. It is slow and calm. Definitely one for winding down at bedtime.

Uit jeugdsentiment dit boekje nog eens uitgelezen... . Ik wist niet meer waarom het me zo aansprak, maar misschien was het de plattegrond van de tuin...? Waarschijnlijk het eerste tuinplan dat ik ooit in m'n handen kreeg en even later wist ik het al: 'ik wil 'tuinen tekenen''. Heerlijke prenten vol herkenbare bloemen en planten. Madeliefje, Hondsdraf, klimop, ooievaarsbek, muur, ereprijs, Marjolein, Boterbloem, vergeet-me-nietje, campanula, klaver, wikke, ... Wie vult aan of corrigeert?

Jori ja Matilda -hiiri menevät avioon ja lähtevät etsimään yhteistä kotia. Molempien yhteinen unelma on asua kaupungissa, joten peltohiiri ja kotihiiri muuttavat maalta kaupunkiin.

Kuvakirjaksi tämä sisältää todella paljon tekstiä, mutta eläydyimme kaikki niin vahvasti tarinaan että se vei mennessään!
