A realistic view of the 1870’s and the race between two companies to be the first to get the railway from Oklahoma to Texas. You wouldn’t think an education in American History would work in a romance book but the author does a great job of balancing the two and keeping your attention without an overload on information.

The heroine Amy Langford was ahead of her time in what today would be called fighting for women’s rights. She was also business woman who was investing in making sure the right c

This story was full of exciting twist and turns. Amy and Buck have so much tension and passion for each other in them or is it more? When in the same room with each other the heat seems to rise. Tempers seem to flair. Amy is a strong outspoken woman for the times, outspoken, wanting things her way in a man's world. She seems to have a lot of bad incidents come her way ,but to her rescue, comes her bodyguard, Buck, who is torn between duty to his blood kin or duty to his heart. He has secrets he ...more

Buck O'Connor is a rascally drifter unapologetically attracted to prairie princess Amy Langford. He enters the beginning of the book as a sort of knight in shining armor and never relinquishes the role. Their early flirtation is filled with humorous moments, where he proves he hides sharp intelligence behind his salacious quips and hot looks, while she impresses as a woman on a mission working successfully in a man's world. The book is told from dual points of view, but for some reason it seemed ...more

The construction of the railroad through Kansas causes emotions to run high. The settlers and the railroad investors square off against each other. It wouldn't take much for deadly violence to erupt. Amy Langford is working to advance the railroad by importing wives for the settlers. She feels that this would encourage men to put down roots, start families and settle here. However, someone doesn't want this to happen. She has several "accidents". The Sheriff won't protect her so she hires a body ...more

Her Bodyguard is a gripping romantic suspense into a little known period of American history. Be prepared to fall in love and be taken on an adventure that will stick with you long past the last pages of this novel.

I really enjoyed the bit of history in this western romance! Having been to the area many, many times, it was so easy to picture Ft. Scott in the good old days! The story took off from the first page and I fell in love with Buck and Amy. Buck is on his way to Ft. Scott, Kansas (via Girard) to help his cousin keep his land claim. Two railroad companies are in a race to reach the border of Indian Territory and are selling the property the settlers have improved upon at ridiculous prices. Buck's jo ...more

I have just finished reading Her Body Guard by E E Burke. I must say I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was very well written. The story flowed very smoothly. I was captivated throughout the book. When I had to put it aside to do other things I could hardly wait to get back to it. Amy, the heroine, was very intelligent and resourceful. She used her intelligence instead of her beauty to compete in a man's world. Buck, the hero, was equally intelligent. He overcame personal obstacles and risked h ...more

E. E. Burke captures the spirit of a strong woman. Amy Langford as she battles her own misgivings and the very real misgivings of the men around her, demonstrates her business acumen. Because of her leadership position she is attacked and threatened and found in need of a bodyguard. Her bodyguard, Buck, proves to be more than a bodyguard.
Burke teaches us about the railroad, women's issues and the very real need for love and understanding from those close to you. I can't wait for the next instal

I loved this book. I loved the hard-edged characters and the feisty flirting. The descriptive way E.E. writes pulls you right through the pages and into the story. The only reason it didn't get five stars is because I didn't want it to end.

My typical reads fall into regency, Scottish, and a little bit of sci-fi romance. It has been quite a while since I've travelled the old west let alone never having touched this history-rich piece specifying Kansas railway hot buttons.

The whole of the story had me already wondering if there was any way around the massive obstacles that were thrown in the path of our hero and his Venus by page 67. I just could not figure a simple way around it. I'll say, it wasn't simple and yet it was. Like ever

Her Bodyguard is a rip-roaring read where romance, history and suspense intertwine to produce a story I could not put down. Amy Langford is a smart and feisty widow who goes head-to-head with both snooty investors and disgruntled settlers in an 1870 Kansas railroad race. Buck O'Connor is a seriously sexy hero driven to atone for the violent sins of his past via a misguided promise to assist his last remaining family member. Only problem is Buck’s mission puts him in direct opposition with Amy--a ...more

Western Historical romance!I have just finished reading this novel Her Bodyguard, of the Steam, Romance and Rails series, written by E.E. Burke. I enjoyed very much this western historical novel. I loved her characters Amy Langford, a head-strong business woman and Buck O’Connor, her handsome hero. She is an intelligent woman who is engaged in a war between men from the railway and settlers. I really enjoyed this story. I am always looking for a great western romance and this one delivered. I really liked how Buck's character had to work through helping his cousin and still help Amy as well. I liked how Amy was independent and able to be herself in a male dominated railroad business. I look forward to reading more in this series.

I loved this story. I really love history and there is enough history and romance in this book. Amy is such a strong character and very progressive for the time, but she still had her soft side. Buck is also very strong with a soft side. If you like American historical romance, you will love this.

Exciting , Enticing and Exhilarating

Where do I start? This book has it all! I started reading this because it was a continuation of a town I had been reading about in another series of books about the American Mail Order Brides. This book was so much more exciting than I thought it would be! Loved it!

This book was just okay for me. I feel bad because it had some decent reviews, but for some reason neither character connected with me. The writing style and plot was good, but the characters fell short and I wasn't very invested in how their story ended. Hit and miss sometimes with electronic reads.

4 and 1/2 stars - Adventure and Love Building the Railroad

Set in Kansas in 1870, this is the story of Buck O'Connor, who fought in the Civil War on the Confederate side, and Amy Langford, who is working with the railroad to import brides to Kansas to help settle the former Indian lands. Unbeknownst to Amy, Buck is in Kansas at the bidding of his cousin, who is fighting the railroad that is threatening to take his land. When Amy, who is being stalked by a killer, asks Buck to be her bodyguard, Bu

I'm really glad I was lucky enough to win a copy of Her Bodyguard in a drawing, because I'm not sure it would have been on my radar otherwise and that truly would have been a loss. Set in post-Civil War Kansas during the railroad boom years, Burke picks a moment in Kansas history that doesn't show up often in historical fiction, much less historical romance, and yet the late 1860s and early 1870s and the coming of the railroad were crucial in defining which towns would thrive and which towns wou ...more

A lot of history, a little intrigue, and a walloping shower of sparks make for a great story! Amy & Buck started at odds, and after his past & her present clash, it's pretty unlikely that they'll ever see eye to eye. It isn't until a common solution presents itself that they realize there's hope...if only they can forgive themselves for the mistakes they've made. Page turner & fabulous story!

So I was hesitant to read HER BODYGUARD Because again I am not a big fan of the historical- THEN BAM!- I got so invested in these characters. I wanted to know more about AMY and BUCK - I thought there story was good and the conflict and trials that surrounded them had me wondering if they could make it work t all-

The added bonus to this was the chapter after the happily ever after- The author told us of how she came about some of her facts and research. That just made the story all the more rea

I read this book awhile back and apparently never reviewed it. Does that happen to you?

What I love about this and all other books by this author, is her seamless blend of immaculate research and storytelling.

The story of Buck O’Connor sounds and feels very real and tangible. It brings to life what men were made of back then and why they fought so hard to protect it.

Amy Langford, was a woman that had worked just as hard to achieve not just her goals in life but to help women and men of her commun

You will love this book by a talented new voice in Historical American Fiction.

I really enjoyed this story about the visionary men and women who helped settle Kansas in the 1880's. I love historical fiction and recommend this book that takes place during the race to build the railroads that would connect our country from East to West. Buck was an officer in the Civil War and he is still fighting his demons when he finds Amy stranded in the wilderness during a snow storm. She's certain someone is

I thought I had found a sexy, but not sex-filled book. WRONG. Seventy percent in (by then, I'm totally committed to the characters!) there is a way drawn-out and descriptive sex scene, and another about eighty-three percent in.

Fantastic! Although this was a departure from the historical romances I normally read, I absolutely loved this book. It was complex, rich, fascinating, and thrilling. I loved the way the hero and heroine slowly learned to overcome their fears and pasts to find not only lust, but mutual respect and love. The heroine was strong, smart, and capable, and the hero was a perfect match for her. The story moved quickly, with so many well-drawn scenes and scenarios to keep me turning the pages. Unexpected

This was an unexpected surprise take on a western romance. For a woman to have had voice in business at all was almost unheard of let alone the position and powerful railroad that Amy had. This book is a terrific story with lots of exciting twist and turns around every corner. Definitely a good clean read for just about everyone
