Alert the Media
Since the time she was in elementary school, Katie has wanted to be like beautiful, blonde Amanda Exeter, a woman she views with equal amounts of disdain and admiration. After years of hoping and wishing, Katie believes she has finally arrived. She and her husband, Rich, move into he same gated community as Amanda.
But the moving truck has no sooner left their driveway, when Katie decides that something is terribly wrong. The ‘move-in condition’ home now seems obviously void of what the neighbors have -- built-in barbecues, french doors, imported fabrics, not to mention his and hers luxury vehicles in the garage.
Katie’s efforts to remake herself and Rich as the neighborhood’s newest “It” couple backfires as her hair-brained plot to climb the social ladder fails. When it comes to fitting in with the neighborhood women, Katie is out of her league.
Decorating confuses her as she has no concept about what the “right white” means. A prosthetic pouch replaces a bulging tummy as pregnancy has also escaped Katie. In his bid for city council, Rich covers the political spectrum of hot topics, but lands in hot water.
As they devise popularity schemes, they fall victim to repeated cases of mistaken identity and are believed to be drug smugglers, sexy swingers, Internet pornography actors, and even pet kidnappers.
For Katie and Rich Pettigrew, “keeping up” is harder than they ever imagined.

This was a refreshing change in genre for me, classified as "chick lit". I truly believe that this book is right on with the times. The star struck, Hollywood loving crowd would DEFINITELY enjoy this book! It has a lot of humor and, the main character, April, seems so real. The characters in this book are so funny! The author made me feel like I was reading about real people from Hollywood. It's a quick, fun read and ends well for all involved. I really enjoyed reading the book and am looking forward to more!

The first novel in the Hollywood Hotties series, Alert the Media is a fun story with some humor mixed it to give it a fun twist. This is my first read for this author and I enjoyed her overall style. This book was originally published in 2013 and was republished the new edition in 2020. I was lucky enough to receive a review copy of this novel and it proved to be the promising start to an interesting series.
April is an established successful Hollywood publicist. Her number one client, an up and coming Hollywood star, is also her husband Ryan, a client turned romantic partner. Unfortunately, Ryan has a bombshell to drop on April. He is gay and, obviously, no longer wishes to continue his marriage to April. However, he still wishes for her to continue their professional relationship as his publicist! Due to Ryan’s public image as a romantic heartthrob, he also needs to maintain that he is straight. Naturally, April is very apprehensive, as she is in denial that the bombshells that Ryan dropped on her are real! She is torn between separating her life from Ryan’s, but is well aware that he is needed for the PR Company she works for.
The insight into the world of celebrities was enjoyable as you see what some publicists most likely go through with their clients. I have no idea how real any of these scenarios (campaign ads featuring celebrities, public relationships, etc.) are with our celebrities, but I cannot imagine that they are completely fictional. It was entertaining to read what publicists do in order to make their clients happy. The story goes through April’s journey to try to balance her personal life with her professional one while dealing with Ryan, who is a demanding client. Unfortunately, I could not connect to April. Even though she was outgoing and good at her job, I just did not relate to her personality. Her imagination was fun to read as she goes through humorous scenarios in her head with almost every interaction she has. I am not a huge fan of this type of writing as I do not need to read word for word what is going on in your head, especially as she would end up getting lost in thought and would need to be brought back to focusing on a conversation by the person she was talking to.
Ryan had no redeemable qualities and it was difficult to tell if we were meant to sympathize with him overall, even though there are events where the author did try. I rarely truly dislike a character as I can usually find some good in them or some tiny quality I like, but I could not do it for this character. It did not matter how much he attempted to grow and realize any hurt that he caused April, as he just was not a good character (based solely on his personality and actions and not on the actual writing by the author). When he announced to April that he was gay and was divorcing her, it was difficult to understand why April would want to win him back. I understand the shock April must feel, but based on the personality Ryan portrayed, it was difficult to see how April was with him in the first place or why others would want to be with him, unless we count his good looks only.
There are some interesting and amusing secondary characters. Bebe, April’s assistant, and Josh, one of April’s bosses, were all over the place, but they did provide some entertaining background to the story. April’s other boss, Bruce, had potential, but he just did not quite get there for me as he only seemed to be there to hit on April. April’s vet for her two dogs, Dr. Bret Emerson, started okay, but I did not enjoy him at all. The guy April hits when she gets in an accident had tons of potential, but I feel like he was thrown in just to help move parts of the story along, but you feel like you are missing pieces of his story and his connection to April. Her sister, Melissa, was a fun addition as she had an over the top personality that gave some levity to April’s life. She was very outgoing, but it was great to have her featured for most of the story as she was a welcome secondary character.
Overall, this novel was entertaining as it does not take itself too seriously and gives a fun glimpse into the world of celebrities and the people who work hard to maintain their images. It had a lot of potential, but I feel like it was unbalanced. There is a lot of time spent on detailed conversations and, I feel, not enough on expanding certain events. There are characters that get many pages dedicated to them that I feel could have been reduced and others that I felt deserved more. Every reader is different, though, so they might feel that the novel is fine as is. I would recommend for others to read it to form their own opinions, as this is the type of novel that one person may love and another may dislike. It has tons of potential and if I come across the next novel in the series, I would most likely try it.

Title: Alert the Media
Author: Mia Fox
Series or Standalone: Series (Hollywood Hotties #1)
Rating: 3 Stars ***
Review:
**ARC received from the author for a fair and honest review**
Alert the Media is the first story in the Hollywood Hotties series and is a new adult chick-lit, humorous read written in first person point of view from the female main character, April.
Having never come across this author before, I went into this story with no real view of her writing style, what genres she writes in or what to expect at all. As with everything I read, I also didn’t check reviews so that my interpretation of the book wouldn’t be swayed in any way.
I’ve been coming across a lot of books that depict Hollywood as of late and I think that’s what drew me into this book to begin with. Every author takes a different stance and portrays their own take on the way it looks behind the scenes and in that regard, I think the author did very well. A lot of the backroom conversations between April’s co-workers and even the ones she was a part of seemed very real to me. It’s a cutthroat business and considering this author took the PR angle, I think it cast in my estimation a very realistic approach to what happens with actors before they hit the public.
I had issues connecting with April which was actually upsetting to me. At time she seemed to be so all over the place that it was hard to maintain my focus, which I hated because man, I really wanted to connect to her all things considered.
Don’t even get me started on Ryan. He came across in a very bad light and I had no sympathy at all for him, his revelation, or the way acted throughout the book, but I do believe given that this was April’s story, that it was kind of the point.
I will say that I do think that some of April’s reactions in certain situations, all things considered were realistic, but the connection I hoped to have for her with the way she was treated, both by Ryan and others, just didn’t resonate at all.
Who I did seem to connect to where the secondary characters. April’s sister Melissa, her parents, and even her friend Jennifer, they all came across as hilarious to me and made this book enjoyable. Where I couldn’t get into the main character they were there to pick up some of the slack and fill me with more than enough entertainment to keep going.
What else worked for me was the pacing of this story. Even though this was a full length book, it did move surprisingly quickly and not in an irritating way. Though I think a lot of that had to do with the fact that it seemed to be 90% conversation throughout and not a whole lot of anything else.
I did get the one thing I was hoping for with this book by the end, and that was character growth and a happy ending and I don’t mean that in a romantic way, but in an overall way. I did want April to be happy, to be able to move past the bomb that Ryan dropped on her in the beginning and his asinine behavior every second afterward and the author delivered that.
Overall I liked this, but it wasn’t a book that stood out to me. I wanted to like it a whole lot more than I did, but much like every other reviewer, that’s my opinion and reaction and might not be anyone else’s so it should be taken with a grain of salt.
I would recommend this book for anyone that just wants to laugh because it’s got a lot of moments in it that you will laugh, at the absurdity of it all and maybe even the realism of what seemingly goes on behind the scenes in Hollywood. The things that no one really talks about. The author did display that perfectly in my estimation.

First, the book was well written and definitely realistic feeling for how I perceive Hollywood, with some really great parts. However, if I am being completely honest, the main character, April, just did not resonate with me. At times she was humorous and I loved her interactions with her family and best friend. At others, I just could not understand her or relate. Ryan was definitely Hollywood stereotyped and just plain annoying. How she didn't manage to throw her shoes or deadlier items at him is beyond me. And it has nothing to do with being gay, but more his over-inflated opinion / self-centered attitude. Him, I didn't like at all. He wasn't mean to animals or abusive to women or anything, just completely insensitive. Which is why I had the hardest time understanding how she could waste her time and energy trying to get him back. For Christ sake, the man left her because he was gay and already had a male lover? As Jessica said, what don't you get about that and MOVE ON. I did get she needed to keep Ryan due to her job...so it wasn't dealing with him that bothered me so much as it was her inability to get past him and deal with the fallout of their marriage. It was also her inability to be honest with her parents, roping her sister into her problems, not dealing with Bruce, etc. Maybe it is just my inability to deal with celebrity lifestyles.
Now, this isn't to say I hated this book, not at all, I just can't say it was great, because it just didn't sit well with me. I'm planning on reading the author's YA book next and hope that I'll love that one.

April and Ryan were the perfect Hollywood Power Couple, the thing was that the public however didn't realise. They all assumed that Ryan was a hot, single hollywood bachelor and April was his arm candy and the behind the scenes girl. The truth was that they have been married for years and now though at the top of both of their roles with April in PR and Ryan in Films , he has dropped a bombshell on April . He has decided to finally come out of the closet and announce to her that he is gay . Not happy gay, but I like guys gay and also by the way, I want a divorce and have been seeing a guy called Matthew. Unsure how to react, April decides to up her seduction game and try and win him back as she believes this is just a fad he is going through. What will happen though when he announces it to the PR company representing him and of course April being Ryan's account manager - wants her to spin and play on his publicity. Now April must learn to juggle her secret divorce and promote Ryan out in the public's eye by setting him up on dates which she believes should rightfully be hers.We read throughout the novel as April tries to move on with her life - both reality and fantasy as trust me , this girl has alot of sexual and relationship-wise fantasies going on in that pretty head of hers. Alert the Media also gives readers a glimpse of what happens behind the scenes in the Hollywood PR business where bad publicity can also be good publicity.

Yeah, so while I technically finished this book, I skimmed through 90% of it, so I can pretty much classify it as a DNF.
Where to begin? We meet April, whose husband leaves her within the first three sentences because he's gay. She, for whatever reason, can't comprehend that he's actually gay, so she tries to stir up things in their marriage. When that doesn't work, she tries sabotage. And when, THAT doesn't work, she decides to become friends with him.
So, pros and cons.
Pros:
I really liked April's sister and BFF.
I loved how she treated her dogs like children. It was cute.
Cons:
There were a LOT of characters in this story, and some had similar names, so it became confusing.
Her constant daydreams were quite annoying, and took up probably 50% of the book.
Her husband was a major douche! He ran up her credit cards, threatened to take her dogs away, cheated on her, and went behind her back to talk about her and their relationship to her boss! Who does that? And who wants to be with someone who does that?
Sorry, but as you can see, the cons far outweigh the pros. Definitely NOT recommended.

Ladies, we’ve all been there: You’re with a guy for 2 years, 5 years, 10 years, more… and one day he says “I’m outta here!” That’s what happened to April. She was married to, and publicist for, Ryan Monahan, one of the hottest guys in Hollywood, and one day he tells her wants a divorce, oh and he’s decided he’s gay! There is not enough ice cream in the world to soothe that broken heart. Insult to injury, she is still his publicist and has to get his image through this rocky patch without losing her own mind!
An honest and hilarious look into the mind of a woman jilted and scorned. April’s fantasies are over-the-top, but real. When we worry or fantasize, we are all over-the-top! Luckily, April has a support team of parents, sister, best friend, and co-workers who help her through her own brave new world.

This book is a social satire. That said it is perfectly acceptable to both laugh at the characters while completely hating them for their ignorance :)
I had serious issues with this book until that was pointed out to me. If I had known in the beginning I am sure it would have amused me a lot more instead of making me want to beat the characters into submission... who am I kidding? I'd still want to beat them but I'd be laughing at the same time :)
If you can laugh at people for their stupidity this is the book for you! I really did enjoy it when I knew it was meant to be offensive. You will enjoy it too as long as you read it with the right mindset :)
Mia Fox is an awesome writer and everything she does is very well written. I especially like that all of her characters grow personally through the course of her books! So far my favorite by her is Released (a Romani Realm book) but I can't wait to read more of her books!
This is a standalone novel.

I've had this book on my Kindle for awhile and when I received the notice of this tour, I decided what better time to read this book than now.
I have to say, I'm a romance addict, so I wasn't too sure of the story as I began. But, the further I went in and the more situations the leading lady found herself... I couldn't put the book down. It's full of humor and a light-hearted approach to the concept of moving on. All wrapped up in a satire of Hollywood actors and publicists. I love the characters and felt like I could easily picture each and every one of them. And, for those of us that like a bit of romance, it's in there too.
If you are looking for something a bit different that will provide laughs, "Alert the Media" is definitely the book for you.
All writing has errors, even with the best editors, but this book was really well edited. I seriously have nothing negative to say about it, other than maybe a bit more about the hottie from the car accident.

One thing I enjoy reading sometimes are parody type novels. They give you an out and fresh look on your Normal reads along with some laughs that will have you going at their expense. Well Alert the Media is definitely one of those that I needed to read. Poor April, the signs where there and she didn’t see it until it was too late. Yet when thr time came she still had to pretend everything was green and nice to help out Ryan’s career. Because she was his publicist! Hmm yeah I wouldn’t have been that nice lol he would have had to get a new publicist! Ryan wanted to have one last time to make sure his feelings were clear (can someone slap him for me please). April has a time of her life with this one so watch out! I did however want to shake her at times to and tell her to wake up and find someone that deserves you! How will she get over everything and move forward? I enjoyed the authors imagination with this one. This was a fun and humorous novel.

This book is mainly about a woman getting over her divorce, namely the fact her husband is gay and left her for another man. Looking from that point this book is really good and the author has a big imagination.
The snnipets of what she would want to happen in this book were funny compared to what really went down.
All through the book it seemed that April was the only one around who had no one, so that's why I loved the end of this book.
I'm a hopeless romantic so reading a book that had no romance involved until the end was really hard for me.
All in all this was an interesting book that I think many would enjoy.

This isn't the kind of book that would have really piqued my interest from the summary however, I decided to give it a go. I'm glad I did. I won't lie, I've read books that touched my heart more than Alert the Media, but it was a great change of pace. I enjoyed the humor and with a paparazzi fueled entertainment world that we're flooded with, it offered an interesting look into said world that isn't usually tackled with humor. It's not the first time that I've read a book with this kind of scenario but it was the first time I've read one that the author used such well written humor to bring it about.

The fact that this story has hilarious scenes and moments is a good one because that makes it a nice read. The story feels real and all the time I was thinking of the gossip mags and tabloids I don't read. Otherwise the quantity of dialogue is good because it gives the story a fast paced rhythm. Some characters I liked and others I didn't. If you want easy laughs with a nice story this is your book and you will enjoy it, for me it was a funny and nice read.

I received a free copy of Alert the Media by Mia Fox and this review was given freely.
April's husband and client Ryan announces he is gay, runs her credit card up to it's limit and then divorces her but keeps her as his publicist. A series of plots against Ryan and some steamy daytime fantasies occur punctuate by April's sister moving in, an office romance, and sisterly drama. Chaotic with multiple happy endings.

I liked this book because I thought it was different from other chick lit out there right now. The story was driven by April and her thoughts, feelings, and crazy daydreams instead of the typical boy-meets-girl-they-struggle-to-be-together-but-end-up-together-anyway stories that flood this genre. Don't get me wrong, love those too, but this change of pace was refreshing.
