Destiel Fanfic
Dean Winchester was twenty-six years old when a car accident killed his father and left him paralysed from the waist down. A year and a half later, Dean is in a wheelchair and lives in a care home in Kansas, where he spends his days waiting to die. It's only when Castiel Novak starts volunteering at the care home that Dean starts to wonder if a changed life always equals a ruined one.

I’ve been watching Supernatural since day-dot; just as enamoured with the awesome storylines, as I am with the hunky dudes onscreen; but I can safely say that my favourite aspect of the show (in the later seasons) involves watching Dean and Castiel interact. As such, I ship Destiel. I think these two dudes have a tv bromance for the ages. Their chemistry is through the roof (and you can just tell that their friendship is genuine). So, yeah, I love these two characters and I recently thought to myself, “why aren’t you reading Destiel fanfiction?” – To which I had no decent answer.

So, here we are. My first Destiel fic... It was a success.

This story is set in an AU (no evil afoot), where Dean has been injured in a car crash that killed his father. He’s coping with the fact that he’ll never walk again, and that his hands are of limited use, causing him severe pain 99% for the time. After a suicide attempt, he moves out of his brother’s house and into a care facility, where he spends his days sleeping and generally avoiding all human contact. Mentally, he’s in a really bad way. He’s angry, bitter and despondent, keeping everyone at arm’s length. Until a new volunteer shows up (Cas) who is able to (slowly, but surely) convince Dean to re-join the land of the living.

This story was so far removed from the world created in the show, and yet all the characters were perfectly portrayed. Dean may have been going through a world of hurt and pain, but he was still essentially Dean. His snarky humour and unwaveringly loyal nature (particularly where Sam was concerned) were astoundingly evident, which made this all the more enjoyable to read.

The romance was a major slow-burn , but the sweetness and beauty of the relationship which evolved between Dean and Cas was more than enough to satiate me. There were so many moments in this story. You know the ones I’m referring to – the poignant conversations and meaningful revelations, which make you think; make you tear up; make you swoon – those moments. Like this...

“Some days I think I’m gonna forget what it was like to be real. To be a part of things. The world’s out there, and I’m in here, and sometimes I can’t remember what it was like when here and there were the same place.”

“For what it’s worth,” Cas says, “if you and ‘the world’ were considered separate places, then I would rather have you.”

This story was extremely heart-wrenching and bittersweet. Dean’s emotional and physical journey - from broken and depressed, to determined and hopeful - was a pleasure to behold, and may I say, handled so impressively by the author. I’ll certainly be checking out more of her works (and more Destiel fics).

My first Destiel! And I really liked it.

Dean is depressed. Seriously depressed. He has been in a wheelchair since a car accident 2 years ago, in which his father died. Dean’s hands are in bad shape as well, and most days he even has trouble using them at all.

Just when Dean thinks no one can stand to be around him anymore, since he has become a complete asshole, he meets Castiel. Cas is volunteering at the care centre Dean is in and doesn’t seem to mind Dean’s surliness. He keeps visiting and doesn’t even seem to see the wheelchair…

There is something about fanfiction that I really like. I sometimes feel most of the M/M books are all kind of the same. They have the same concept, the same people. But fanfiction authors don’t write because they want to sell as many books as possible, they write because they want to. And that shows. I know their characters are not original, but I’m always amazed at the writing in most fanfics.

I really liked this fic. Dean was in a pretty dark place and I could totally understand him being an asshole. But I also loved how Cas kept saying the chair was not Dean. And he showed Dean there was more than just his disability.

The romance was sweet and I was happy that there was lots of comfort to balance our Dean’s hurt, because it could be a bit much at times.

I would have loved to read how they eventually got on with the sexy times, but alas, only kissing in this. They do talk about sex and how Dean might not be able to. And Dean mentions a sex life in the epilogue. But that was it. We can’t have it all..

Overall a very enjoyable hurt/comfort Destiel.

Destial - Supernatural fanfic. I've watched some Supernatural at some point, but only enough to be familar with the brothers.

There's a good impression of Dean's character; cocky, protective, messed-up. This is an AU that has Dean in a wheelchair and I was impressed how it was dealt with, his moods; depression, defensiveness were believable especially when coupled with memories.

The story felt well paced, nothing rushed it was a slow recovery and not the smoothest path. More than romance it was a building friendship and story of recovery. I was glad there was no on-page sex because it would have cheapened things.

Unlike other stories in this trope (disabled person - hot carer) Castiel needed Dean as much as he helped him, he was stuck in his own fog of issues and needed that battle of wills just as much as Dean did. I'd have liked there to be a bit more to him but it worked.

Couldn't keep track of all the carers/patients, you'd need to follow the show to recognise the names there wasn't enough description of them for them to mean much to me but it didn't stop me enjoying the fic.

The ending is all schmaltzy. There were feels and several lines that stood out.

I liked a lot about this fic: the writing and characterization were very good. The author, having worked in a care home herself, painted a very believable picture of Dean's recovery and the day-to-day in such an institution.

Unfortunately, my niggles with this story start here as well. At times, this felt too much like a handbook 'Caring for the depressed and disabled' and Cas acted more like a therapist than a love interest. Also, the plot was a tad too simple for the length of the story, especially the 2nd half dragged a lot.

Really good. While the author appears to not know the cost of assistive devices for the handicapped, she seems to have quite a bit of research on how disabilities affect people. I really liked the slow build and the lack of a miraculous ending.

A well written, moving fanfic in which volunteer Castiel helps Dean overcome his deep depression following his paralysis.

Get wrecked like it's 2013 again!

Found this on a random rec list and fell down the rabbit hole again. Absolutely perfect writing and AU-building. Haven't read such long piece in YEARS.

had me floored.

Now excuse me I have to go listen Tom Walker's "Angels" on repeat.

Hard to rate. The first half was definitely 4-star-worthy, but it got a bit drawn out in the second half, and there was an epilogue (for which I have a sometimes enforced policy of brutally taking one star away), so... 3,8 stars, rounded down to 3 because of the epilogue. This is the second Supernatural fanfic I've read without realizing that it's fanfic. Go me.

I really do love reading about cocky, self-confident people who're as in love with themselves as with their boy toys, but I can't help also enjoying the occasional tale of woe. There's something about deeply depressed characters that really appeals to me. And here it's a cocky character gone miserable, so you get a bit of both!

This is also the second story about a handicapped guy that turned out to be rather brilliant. All that bitterness, anger, hopelessness? Love it. Of course, there's more to the story than that, but I really, really liked seeing how Dean developed in this book.

Pacing? Perfect. Humor? YES. Because you need humor in books about people who wish they were dead. Sure, I would have enjoyed Cas a bit more if he'd had more bite to him, but I'm not really complaining. Not really-really. Just... a man who doesn't drink alcohol and who considers an apple the equivalent of pie? Seriously? I would never touch that, myself.

AND ONE MORE THING. At one point, there was this oh-so-obvious occasion for a moron plot twist based upon miscommunication (because everyone loves those). And the author didn't go there. Respect.

Dean’s paralyzed from the waist down and Cas’s a volunteer at the care home he stays. I’d give this fanfic 5 out of 5, but it lacked, for me, the sexual relation, it could perfectly been there, but over all, an awesome fanfic.
