About the author

I am a long-time educator who cares passionately about children, literacy, the thoughtful integration of digital technologies in schools, and closing the achievement gap.

In co-authoring "TechnoTeaching: Taking Practice to the Next Level in a Digital World," I teamed up with Nicole Ponsford, an award-winning teacher and writer from the UK. We met on the Internet and Skyped and emailed our way through several rounds of manuscript. We still have not met!

In writing the "Tug the Pup" series, I was lucky enough to have been approached by HarperCollins to write a series for young readers. I also had the good fortune of working with Sebastien Braun, a terrific children's illustrator.

Beyond writing, I also love Broadway shows, jazz, art, and meeting with my book and writers' groups. Or hanging out at home by the fire with my husband, friends, and shy tiger cat, Cleopatra.

Review by status updates:
Tonight before bed I decided to try these on my daughter. With other beginning readers she'll read one or two. Tonight she finished one, and snatched the next and the next until we had read all Level A books, all Level B books, and started the first of four Level C books.
...This was the first one she started to struggle on. I believe we have three left and it took some convincing for me to get her to agree to wait until tomorrow. Unlike most beginner books sets with 12 books, the 12th book is indeed a parents guide with stickers to use upon completion of reading a book.
...These are perfect at her current level. We have finished phonograms A-Z and long vowels with short as well as some magic e. She automatically got /ch/ in chick and did well with the /th/ we came across in repetition but I did have to explain /ay/ that was new to her. But was then repeated enough that I believe it will stick! I'm impressed and a fan.

We loved these! They are super cute, just the right length, feature the same characters throughout, and don’t have a lot of long crazy words they won’t be able to sound out. My kindergartener read these to me and we both enjoyed them.

Great set of early readers. These area easy enough that my daughter doesn't get discouraged, but the text and story are still cute and engaging.

This series is a cute beginning series for new readers. This is the first boxed set of reading books for levels A-C (the reading levels in this series is A-G ). There are 12 books in this set with the 12th book being a parent guide on how to use the reading system. The books remind me of the Bob books that helped me learn to read but this I Can Read! series is much more colorful and I like the character illustrations. Tug the Pup and his friends are great characters. There is a lot of repeated words in each book to make it easier for kids to learn to read certain sounds/words. There is a fun sticker reward system for parents to encourage their kids to read each book. The books are 12 pages each with simple words on one page and a bright illustration on the facing page.
It looks like a great set for teaching kids how to read.
