Famously referred to by US president Woodrow Wilson as “the war to end all wars,” the first world war eclipsed all previous wars with its scale of destruction. With over twenty-seven nations involved, the battle-field horrors and political outcomes of the first truly global military conflict had repercussions that are still felt today.

The library has several of these NPR American Chronicles series but this was the first one I've heard. Basically these are a compilation of stories from NPR related to a particular theme. I was impressed with this one and enjoyed it.

(Note: I'm stingy with stars. For me 2 stars means a good book. 3 = Very good; 4 = Outstanding {only about 5% of the books I read merit this}; 5 = All time favorites {one of these may come along every 400-500 books})

American Chronicles: World War I. 3 CDs. 3.5 hrs. High Bridge Audio. 2014. ISBN 9781622313853. $24.95.

NPR compiled this wonderful assortment of World War I stories to mark the 100th anniversary of "The War to End All Wars." Included in this three disc set are: first hand accounts from veterans, author talks with noted war historians, poetry, broadcasts from that era, and many often overlooked stories and battles. From the last of the dough-boys to the Christmas Truce of 1914, this compilation i

National Public Radio (NPR) has gone through its archives and pulled out almost thirty stories about World War I in honor of the 100th anniversary of the start of the war. The stories range from interviews with soldiers to interviews with historians and authors.

Topics include a look at pre-World War I Europe, a look at the creator of the Sopwith Camel, discussions of several battles, hand-created masks for men whose faces were damaged in the war, a mini-biography of America's famed flying ace E

This collection epitomizes the two things I most like and dislike about NPR. On the one hand, the stories told here about World War I highlight a lot of nooks and crannies that don't generally get explored in the general cultural discourse (records of a black soldier serving in France, recollections of everyday people who went off to war, etcetera). On the other, it's all done in a superficial fashion designed to fit into four- to ten-minute blocks on shows like All Things Considered or Here and Now, failing ...more

This book is a compilation of World War I stories that were originally aired on NPR. Various announcers talk to authors of new books on World War I, World War I veterans, and the biographers of Thomas Sopwith and Eddie Rickenbacker. The interviews put a human face on the most famous names from the first global war as well as bringing to light unknown names and incidents. The most unsettling interview is the one that compares global conditions in 1914 with today's world as they are eerily similar ...more

I wish this book was longer and that more personal accounts had been documented before all the WWI veterans passed away.

This is an excellent way to find out more about WW I. Only 3 discs and you come away with a greater understanding of the "big picture" of WW I, as well as the very human side. Highly recommended.
