Sister Witches Mystery #1

The Mayhem Sisters

Rate this book
Vivi, Honora, and Clover are the Mayhem sisters, and thanks to an old family curse, trouble is never far away.

In the witching world of Everland, magic is everywhere. Growing up all young witches are taught the arts of spellcasting, potions, charms, earth magic, and wandwork, but what really makes a witch special is her persuasion, the magical power she is born with.

Potion master Vivi Mayhem spends her days brewing up magical elixirs for her successful shop, The Potion Garden, in the quiet town of Willow Realm. But the middle Mayhem sister is hiding a dangerous secret. Her troubles begin when her true magical persuasion of prophecy forces her to see a terrible crime—a young witch kidnapped and tortured by an evil practitioner of black magic.

In her desperate quest to save the witch, Vivi must learn to master her burgeoning magical abilities in the face of skepticism from Willow Realm’s handsome sheriff and strong resistance from the Witch Council’s top security force. Hex Division doesn’t want Vivi anywhere near the investigation, especially after her increasingly disturbing visions implicate the most powerful healers in Everland, the mysterious Mender twins.
Events take a turn for the worse when Vivi discovers the involvement of the Darklander, a ruthless fringe wizard who is involved in mysterious dealings in the Dire Woods that surround his mansion. Vivi’s going to need all the help she can get from her sisters to rescue the missing witch and prove she isn’t just seeing things.

Brimming with magic, mayhem, and a trio of cunning sister witches, The Mayhem Sisters is a paranormal mystery that will keep you guessing until the very end.

I went in expecting it to be a bit more humorous than it was, but still a good read.

Vivi has been hiding her magical "persuasion" in an attempt to ignore it, since most seer's went a bit made. But now she's seen something so horrible, she'll do what it takes to prevent it from happening.

The world is interesting in that witches built it for themselves separate from humans. Some magic seems to be doable for all by learning a spell, some requires training and one type you are just born with.

I'll probably check out the next one at some point.

Mayhem as a Quick delight!

This quirky tale of a world of witches is a delight. I, was very intrigued and turned the pages like devouring an ice cream cone. However, this story doesn't melt or disappear. If, you like fantasy witchy stories, read this. I certainly enjoyed it. I look forward to reading the next book in this series. Way to go Lauren Quick.

This was a funny novel with three quirky sisters, a magic stealing murderer and lots of fun magical mishaps. Vivi is stubborn and determined to help the girl she sees in her visions before it is too late, even if it gets her in heaps of trouble in the process. I would recommend this book to others.

FUN OCTOBER READ

I choose this book for the month of October because what is better than a fun witchy mystery before Halloween? I enjoyed the character relationships between Vivi and her sisters. I felt a little bit more back story could have gone into the character development but perhaps that will be corrected in subsequent titles. The book was very clean, only one typo that I saw (in the Kindle version), no language, no sex, minimal violence. Some discussion of death but nothing descriptive. Overall, I enjoyed it enough to venture into book 2 of this series to see if the author sheds a little more light into the characters, but it is not something I will rush out to read right away. Kingdom of Ash just came in the mail and I cannot wait to dive into the epic conclusion of the Throne of Glass adventure. :)

It's an entertaining read. My only nagging annoyance was, if the premise is that this community was once part of the world but separated and isolated itself from the world, then how is it that despite having magical transportation and such, they also have cell phones and computers just like in the world they claim to have not returned to for 200 years?

It is not congruent to follow that both earth and this hidden community would experience the same type of technological growth at the same rate, unless there was a connection to Earth that remained. I suppose that until or unless this detail is explained, one must read on and suspend that notion. The story is certainly entertaining enough to allow for that.

Great tale for the sisterhood of contemporary witches!

I've just discovered this genre and I've read a few different series but this one is the best, so far!! The story is of three sister witches, within their own whimsical magical world. Mystery, fun, flirting and the story of good vs dark magic, all within one sweet tale. It's a light hearted read that leaves you wanting to delve into the next book immediately. I loved it!

A wonderful witchy whodunit.

Ms. Quin kept me guessing right up to the end. I love the sisters and look forward to the rest of the series.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It has the perfect blend of magic, mayhem, and modern day issues when it comes to love, family, and friendships. I'm adding this one to my ongoing 'Will Reread' list.

Cute

If you're interested in a light read, this is a good choice for the genre. I know it's the beginning of a series, however it could be a stand alone. I appreciate that.

The Mayhem Sisters (A Sister Witches Mystery Book 1) by Lauren Quick takes the reader to the witch filled world of Everland. Everland is a safe haven for witches to live out their lives segregated from all of the other types of supernatural creatures and humans. As a result it has its own school system, cities, towns, and problems. Each witch is taught the basics in the arts of spell casting, earth magic, potions and charms along with how to use their wand while at school. (In a similar "Harry Potter" type of way.) However, each witch has a very special and most of the time secret special ability called a persuasion. Some persuasions are common, while others are very rare. As one could imagination this causes a lot of friction among young witches especially if they don't have a very strong magical ability.
The Mayhem Sisters are strong witches with rare persuasions. Vivi has prophesy as her persuasion, but works as a potions master. She keeps her persuasion a secret since it tends to freak people out. Honora is a flyer which makes her stronger and faster than the average witch, she uses her persuasion in her PI business. And Clover is word witch with strong illusion magic. She keeps this a secret due to being a really famous author.
Okay, so that's the background information. I'm not going to repeat that in the reviews of the other books since you should start this series with the first book.
Book 1 is about Vivi. Vivi's fear of her persuasion comes with consequences. She doesn't use it that often and when she does it hits her hard. She fears what people will think about her along with being lost to vision at random times. But when she has a terrible vision about a murder, she can no longer live with keeping it a secret. She goes to the local police to try to prevent the crime from happening. On the plus side of things she knows the local sheriff the negative side is that since she isn't a register seer, the police can't take her seriously.
Will Vivi, learn to control her gift? Will she save the girl from being murdered and figure out who is behind the heinous crime and why?
Overall, I enjoyed reading this series. I actually read it out of order by starting with Book 3. Other than that, Quick creates a fun filled universe filled with complex characters. The mysteries are easy to follow and will keep you guessing. The romance is almost nonexistent, but mentioned here and there. I recommend reading this series if you like the Harry Potter books but are looking for more adult content and fun.

Well-written and richly developed story

I really liked this book. The author clearly thought a lot about the story "world" as everything was richly described and well-developed. The writing was very good and although there were some minor typos, the editing was far better than many books in the fiction genre. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because the pace was a little slow in the beginning and I think it could have moved along a bit faster. I'm definitely going to check out the author's other work.

Three sisters, three witches, three powers. They are the Maythem sisters.

In Everland, a world of witches and more, magic is important. What powers you get determines your path. Honora can levitate, so she can fly. Clover is a writer who has a bestselling witchy series. And Vivi, the middle child, brews potions. Vivi has been hiding a secret from even her own family. She can see visions of what is to come. For years she has suppressed it out of fear that she will go crazy like the other witches with this ability has. Until one day, she can't suppress it anymore because her vision told her about a witch that will be killed. Like a good witch, she wants to help save this poor witch. But she faces quite a few problems.

The Hex Division, an witch government agency, doesn't want her meddling in the investigation. Heck, they don't even believe she can see visions since Vivi has NEVER said or showed that she could before. Not only that, the handsome sheriff of Willow Realm tries to believe her, but doesn't want her to get harmed. Even though the chemistry sizzles between two of them, he can't do much for her. He tries his best to balance his duty by solving this case for her and protecting her from harm or trouble. So, she decides to do it all on her own, asking her sisters for back up as she dives into this strange case to stop the murderer.

This was actually a pretty interesting series. At first, I was wandering, but when I reached the middle of the book, I got pulled in. I loved the relationships between the sisters. I always loved stories that had close witch families in it. Also, I was pretty surprised with the turns in Vivi's investigation. It kept me on the edge of my seat, wondering who is the murderer and WHY? Great book!

Starts off slow but

Finishes with a bang!
An enjoyable witchy adventure/mystery about 3 sisters known as "Mayhem". First because it's their family curse. Second, because if these three are involved...there is bound to be a little mayhem.

Our main character is Vivi. Who has spent her entire life denying her natural witchy talents. But after a life changing vision of a doomed witch, she can no longer stay hidden. if she is to save this witch from certain death, she has to come out of her broom closet and admit the truth of who and what she really is. No matter the consequences she will endure because of it.

The book may start off slow, but it builds nicely. And the characters grew on me the more I read. Over all i rather enjoyed this little gem. And I will be continuing on in this series and reading the next one soon. :-)

This book takes place in an alternate reality created for witches to live in relative safety from the rest of the world. It revolves around 3 Mayhem sisters, but this book focuses on Vivi, a potion maker who is fighting a budding talent of prophecy. Vivi can't keep it to herself when she witnesses the kidnapping and murder of a fellow witch. She goes to the handsome sheriff. The story is a fun, fast read revolving around the Darklander, a mysterious and "evil" wizard who lives in the Dark Wood and the Hex Division who has taken on the case.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I do wish there had been a little more romance splashed in. It was mostly a witchy murder mystery. I'm still not sure if I'll delve into the second book, which is about Vivi's sister.

Since I don't normally write reviews unless I have something specific to say, here's the break down of how I rate my books...

1 star... This book was bad, so bad I may have given up and skipped to the end. I will avoid this author like the plague in the future.

2 stars... This book was not very good, and I won't be reading any more from the author.

3 stars... This book was ok, but I won't go out of my way to read more, But if I find another book by the author for under a dollar I'd pick it up.

4 stars... I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be on the look out to pick up more from the series/author.

5 stars... I loved this book! It has earned a permanent home in my collection and I'll be picking up the rest of the series and other books from the author ASAP.

More a 3.5, but I'll go ahead and star it as 4 on here since it was a pleasant surprise.

I've had this pending in my Books to Read (for Kindle Unlimited) for months now. Although I liked the description of the book, I worried about it due to some of the reviews on it and the fact that I had run into so many duds in other series similar to this.

Although the first 1/3 of the book was a bit slow, a little confusing, and dragged a little...it did pick up fairly quickly after that and just sucked you in. I've read the next two books already, so overall, it is an interesting enough series to get into if you're looking for something easy.

The book surprised me and was better than I expected. To be fair though, you could see what was coming way before it was revealed. And I don't get the potential love interest sheriff. He seemed like a schmuck to me but that's neither here nor there. The resolution was interesting and could be read as an interesting social commentary about the idea of social control for protection. I hope she makes the evil Wizard show up again as a complex figure fighting for change that seems negative but is really not. That plotline would really intrigue me.

What is not to love about this book, Lauren has created a believable magical world with lovable characters and some freaky baddies as well I really enjoyed it.
The Mayhem sisters certainly live up to their name and I can not wait to read more from them they will all be a joy to get to know.
In this first book we meet all 3 sisters but this story focuses mainly on Vivi the quietest of the sisters, what is she hiding? and will the handsome Sheriff Lance ever ask her out? hmmm Its a great story with an awesome mystery to solve with a few suspects.

I really enjoyed this magical tale of three sisters and their dive into a mysterious vision. I enjoyed the relationship between the sisters and the great characters in the book. The story is well written with vivid characters and a griping story line. I was quickly caught up in the story – read it in under a day, and already purchased book two! If you enjoy magical worlds, with a little bit of flirting and a good mystery, than I highly suggest the Mayhem Sisters.

Persuasion?

I tried to read the book. Several times in fact. However I could not get past the overuse of the word persuasion, italicized no less. Perhaps Quick felt that the word talents was too simple. She uses this italicized word multiple times on each page. It became so annoying that I stopped trying to read the book and moved on.

I really loved the premise...

But for me the story didn't deliver. Great idea, though, and will try another just in case I'm being too critical. It just felt odd in places, the language didn't flow naturally - there was one point describing a change of clothes where it read as though a box of adjectives had been sprinkled on the page.

Great storyline. Main sister Vivi, comes off at times as being an immature brat. She gets mad at her sisters and heads straight into danger to prove a point. Then she's guilt them into illegal things. Grow up Vi.
