Rate this book
The next installment in the bestselling “Selby” series, Fashionable Selby explores the kaleidoscopic world of fashion, featuring profiles of today’s most interesting designers, stylists, haberdashers, models, shoemakers, and more. The subjects include a mix of the avant-garde, the traditional, the must-haves, and the totally unexpected. Chapters on individual artists bring readers inside their studios, workshops, and homes, and include Selby’s signature photographs and watercolors of not only the artists and their environments, but also the things that inspire them, the materials they use, their creative process, the people who work alongside them, and the final pieces. From the showroom of one of the Antwerp Six to the studios of Central St. Martins in London to a punk knitter in Brooklyn, Selby captures some of fashion’s biggest names, rising stars, and best-kept secrets.

Yet another visually stunning volume from Todd Selby, this time with a focus on fashion visionary types ranging from well-known names to young guns on the cusp. Selby captures his subjects in an assortment of environs (their dwellings, workspaces, shops) every image bursting with color and detail that rewards the leisurely gazer with personal insights and creative inspiration galore. The hardcover (versus the ebook) version is certainly the preferred option with rigid, glossed stock that lavishly springs Selby's world-view to life.

This is a glorious book of glimpses into the studios and minds of various people in fashion. Chosen by the author's preference, it therefore has a great spectrum of Important Fashion people and people whose craft is part of bigger houses.
The photography is gorgeous and clear, shifting perspective to shoot the aesthetic of each personality. Each short profile was its own world--sometimes muted, sometimes wild or crude, and often unexpected.

This is a beautiful book. It is very inspiring and I am definitely going to look up some of the people profiled in it.

My only complaint, which is a small but frustrating one is he refers to a picture of a crocheted hat as knit even though on the next page the woman states she crochets. Why!? Why can people not tell the difference? This kills me, man. He should have know better as even she states she crochets!

Other than that gorgeous and inspirational!

It's a treat not just for the eyes, but also for the heart. I love how in this book we can see just how much of the artists personality goes into their art. I love the way Selby portraits these artists living spaces and how every artist handwriting somehow sums up their character. I find it motivating to see that these eccentric beings are alive out there, making me feel less lonely. I hope that I can also live by my heart, as much as these free souls do!

Although the photography is lovely and the format of The Selby's interviews (handwritten) is refreshing, much of the book is merely celebrating people of privilege and fails to be inspired or inspiring. The more up-from-the ground, diy people profiled are few, but those spreads make up for the rest of the book's in-your-face, arrogant, out-of-reach feel.

Do understood this is an artsy book so the choice of publishing handwriting from the artists are used. However, I find that quite a few are very difficult to read and that took away my enjoyment of reading this book.

One of the most beautiful books I have ever seen. I'm not a very visual person, but this completely engaged me. Really great blurbs about the creative processes of diverse artists in the same general medium of fashion.

A feast for the eyes. The imagery and stories told in this book are top-notch. The studio tours, photography, and interviews feel heartfelt and real. I poured over this for days. It's the kind of book I could pick up again and again.

This was an incredible book about fashion designers and artists. It is full of inspiration and it was neat to learn a little bit about each designer/artist. This is a must read for anyone interested in the topic or for anyone that likes art.

Truly inspirational! Just go to a book store and flip it through and you'll see what I mean. I'm willing to skip my 8 hours of sleep just to indulge in this visual explosion.

Ugh. I was so excited for this book, but by the end of it I was so bored. Good to flip through for inspiration, but I wouldn't keep it around for much else -- it's too disorganized!
