This was a very refreshing and unique read for me. I literally read it in one sitting. I just couldn’t put it down.
It is kind of paranormal, that can be interpreted as the life of a girl in two parallel dimensions.
Sabine has two lives. She describes her situation as follows:
“I am two people. Neither better than the other, no superpowers, no mystical destinies, no two-places-in-one-time mechanism – but two people. Different in ways fundamental, even though at the most basic level I look the same. My physical attributes, my memory and my name follow me. For the past eighteen years, everything else, everything , about me is different. Twenty-four hours as the first of me. And in the blink of an eye, twenty-four hours as the second of me. Every day, without fail, it goes on …”
She says, “Every night, I Cinderella myself from one life to the next” ... “my body clock is different from everyone else’s. There is no loophole. Until now, that is.”
Every day at midnight, she shifts lives. When she shifts from one life to another, there is no time lapse in the other one. It happens in the blink of an eye. She just goes there, and while she is living 24 hours in the other life, not even one second passes here. So, when she shifts back to the other life, it is like no time has passed, no lapse at all. So noone can realize it.

She lives one of her lives in Roxbury and the other in Wellesley. In one life, she has a little sister and in the other she has two brothers. Her parents are different, her friends are different. Her homes are different. Her financial situation and future promises are different in two lives.
Her body, and anything inherent to her body, which is her mind and memories go to the other life through the Shift. But material things such as clothes or jewellery cannot. Only her name is the same in both lives: Sabine. Nothing else.
Until the age of 18, physical qualites also went through the Shift. Her injuries, her illnesses and even haircut went through the Shift.

At the age of 18, a glitch occured. The rules had changed.
Her arm was broken in one life but it didn’t go through the Shift to the other life and she was surprised to see her arm was not broken in the other life.
This led her to do some tests to be sure if no physical crossed over any more. Because if it didn’t, she thought there could be a chance to make sure there was only one of her, by killing the other.

Sabine wasn’t happy with leading two lives. Think of it like this. You have one boyfriend here in one life. But you have another boyfriend in another life. But your heart is one and the same and it couldn’t normally belong to two people. That is only one of the complications. Everything was so difficult. She had to finish schools twice in each life. It seems that she has lived 18 years but she felt it as if she lived for 18x2=36 years, doing similar things twice with different people. That is why, she wants a normal life and she knows which life she prefers.
She only needs to test to make sure if it is possible...
However, as the saying goes, “Life is what happens when you are busy making other plans” and life brings her unexpected choices and opportunities.
She has to reconsider everything...

Oh Ethan, my poor beautiful boy Ethan... He will engrave himself in your heart for sure...

Without thinking, I lifted my arm towards him, my handcupping his face. His eyes widened, but he didn’t move away. ‘Need someone to know me,’ I murmured. Begged. Because we both knew he still hadn’t answered my question.
‘Why?’ he asked, his voice breaking.
‘Cause no one ever has... Want a chance … to really live,’ I murmured.

This book was a roller coaster of emotions. Even a very simple dialogue like the one below, given the circumstances, made a big impact and caused me to burst into bloody tears:
I shot a look at the clock. So did he. One minute till midnight.
‘What?’
‘Don’t.’
‘Don’t what?’
‘Don’t do it tonight...’
The first half of the book is mostly about how Sabine lives and what things have changed at the age of 18.
The second half deals with her choice and this second half includes romance and deeper emotions.

This is a book in which emotions rise gradually with each page you turn. But as I said, you will feel diverse emotions.
You will be angry, you will get scared, you will get confused, you will feel doubtful, you will be sad, you will be happy, you will shed tears, sad tears, happy tears...
The book will give you all.

Whatever I feared, it happened.

Only.. Only, I wished there would be an epilogue, but there wasn’t. So, I would really appreciate a Book 2 or a novella... something... something more... But, that doesn’t mean that the book doesn’t have a good ending. It does have a very good ending (At least for me, it was good. But if you need a HEA with marriage and kids, maybe you will be disappointed as there is none).
Still, although I loved how it ended, it just wasn’t enough, I needed more... more time with them...
Therefore, it is 5 points out of 4,5 for me...
All in all, this is one of these books you must read, it should’t be missed.

Thought provoking and compelling, Between the Lives is a story about a girl with two lives. One is seemingly perfect, but the other has him…
At first this novel reminded me quite a bit of Lucid by Adrienne Stoltz and Ron Bass which I loved, but it ended up standing on its own. While Lucid was more about the mystery, this one is more about big choices and love and life. Often throughout this book I would stop and think about what I would do if I had two lives. Imagine the possibilities! Being able to basically get an extra 24 hours every day to be a different person, yet the same. I just loved this idea, although I could also understand her wanting to give one up, to be able to fully live in one life instead of having to live a lie twice.
The double life aspect is built with fantastic attention to detail - though it isn't at all difficult to understand like some sci-fi novels can be. It just has many layers to avoid plot holes or endless questions. Like, what happens with injuries and memories and how both worlds work in terms of each other (if she goes to her "other" home, or tries to find people from the other life, for instance). I also loved how different she was in each life. In one, she seems to have it all. A wealthy family, a future at Harvard, tons of friends, popularity, and the perfect relationship - on the outside (I don't get why she stayed with him if he made her so queasy - I know that he's a constant to her but bleh). In the other, she's kind of a delinquent with nothing much going for her in comparison. But then she meets Ethan just when she decides she's done with this life. Sabine is an 18 year old girl, and teenage girl priorities she has. Her outlook on life is superficial and she can be selfish at times. She may not be the most likeable protagonist, but she's certainly realistically constructed.
While in one life the romance makes you kind of uneasy, in the other, we've got a wonderful love interest: Ethan who is full of charm and larger-than-life questions. I loved how he gave her a reason to stay, but he didn't make it about himself. He made her think of her double-life as a gift instead of a curse. He also comes with baggage of his own that gives the book some emotional depth as well as a sense of realism that you don't always find in YA romance. Other than romance we have family and parental presence which I appreciated, but what I enjoyed most was the sibling relationships in both lives. One is a young sister who's adorable, the other is the older brother with whom she finally forms a bond. With a smaller role but just as well developed, her friend Capri bring a lot of life to the book and quickly became a favourite of mine.
Romance, family, life, and second chances; Between the Lives is a wonderfully crafted contemporary story with a sci-fi twist. I would recommend it to those who like stories with a meaning.

Bu okuduğum neydi böyle? Devamı yok mu? En azından 1 bölümcük? ??
Kitabı okumaya başladığımda yorumlara göre bu kitabın ne kadar güzel olduğunu tahmin edebiliyordum ama bu kadar seveceğimi tahmin etmemiştim. Kitabı okuduğum sırada spoiler gördüm maalesef bu durumdan nefret ediyorum :(( neyse işte ama bu kitaptan soğutmadı beni neyse ki ve okumaya devam ettim. Sonunu bilsem bile sonunda ters köşe oldum yani :D
Bu kitap çok duygu yüklü, anlamlı bir kitaptı. Konusu çok ilginçti ve kitabı bitirdiğimde iyi ki okumuşum dedim. Çok çok çok güzeldi. kesinlikle tavsiye ederim...

“Bu imkansız, Sabine. Eğer aklının yarattığı biri olsaydım beni bu şekilde yaratmazdın, inan bana. Ayrıca bazı şeyler o kadar gerçek ki onları iliklerine kadar hissedersin. Nereye gittiğinin bir önemi yoktur, seninle gelirler. Her yere.”
Maratonda sırf isminde rakam var diye seçtiğim kitap yine dram çıktı. Ben kaçsam o beni buluyor sanırım.
Kapağını açmamla kitabı bitirmem bir oldu. O kadar akıcı yazılmış ki son sayfalara geldiğimde ancak bitmek üzere olduğunun farkına vardım. İki dünya arasında gidip gelmek, Sabine’nin karakteri ve çevresi çok farklı olduğundan beni hiç zorlamadı. Geçişlere çok kolay uyum sağladım. Roxbury’deki ailesine inanılmaz sinir oldum. O baba bozuntusu adamın kemiklerini kırmak istedim. Bunun yanında özellikle sonlara doğru Wellesley’deki ailesini çok sevdim. Her ne kadar Sabine kendini iki dünyada da yalnız hissetse de Wellesley’deki ailesi kötü gününde yanında oldu. Zor zamanlarında ailelerin tavırları çok farklıydı.
Sabine’e bayıldım. Kafa karışıklıklarına, çelişkilerine, yaşadığı hayattan yorulmasına, kendini yalnız hissetmesine ve üstüne Ethan’ın sahneye çıkmasına rağmen kusurlu ama güçlü bir karakterdi. Roxbury’de yaşadıklarına çok üzüldüm ama bütün kitap boyunca ben de Sabine gibi iki hayat arasında bir seçim yapamadım.
Tabi bir de Ethan var. Eczaneden içeri girdiği anda kitabın havası değişti. Sabine’e yaptığı küçük oyun dışında sevdiğim bir karakter oldu. Özellikle mektubunu okumak bana kırmızı ve şiş gözler kazandırdı. Klinikteki ilk geceden son geceye kadar Sabine’nin yanından ayrılmaması, ilaçla uyutulmuşken bile elini bırakmaması, ona inanmaya çalışması, yalnız olmadığını hissettirmesi, hem güçlü hem naif sevgisi çok etkiledi. Ben biraz daha fazla Ethan okumak isterdim.
Kitabın sonu... Kaçınılmaz olarak yine canımı çıkardı. Yine bir dram ve yine gözyaşı. Tahmin etsem de duvara çarpmış gibi oluyorum böyle sonları okurken. Yazar, o son 5 sayfayı yazmasaydı kitabı camdan atabilirdim. Olaylardan sonra tek dileğim sonunun böyle bitmesiydi, o yüzden son 5 sayfa beni inanılmaz tatmin etti. Bununla birlikte bir 30-40 sayfa daha devamında olacakları okumak çok güzel olurdu.

Yoğun çocuksu bir korkuyu hissederken, bundan uzaklaştırılıp, sonra aynı dehşet haline geri döneceğinin bütün farkındalığıyla önündeki yirmi dört saat boyunca başka bir gerçekliğe sokulmanın nasıl olduğunu bilmiyordu. Sürekli ne dediğimi düşünmenin, hiçbir şeyi ele vermediğimden emin olmak için iki kere kontrol etmenin, sonunda birinin beni yakalayacağı, deli diyeceği korkusuyla yaşamanın nasıl olduğunu bilmiyordu. Ve asla gerçekten bir yere ait olmamanın nasıl olduğunu da bilmiyordu.
📚”Birinin seni tanımasını istediğini söyledin. Belki de ben de sadece birinin beni tanımasını istiyorumdur. Bu dünyada sen olmazsan paylaştığımız her anın hatırası kaybolacak. Sadece başkaları bizi gördüğü için varız. Varlığımın bir parçası...” yutkundu, “... önemli bir parçası, sadece sen burada onu gördüğün için var.”

Really interesting idea you have here, right? One girl. Two lives.
Verrry cool.
I think I would have rated it higher If I hadn't seen the ending coming from a mile away. Not that it's a bad ending! Far from it, but I just...knew it would happen. Exactly like it happened.
So I'm thinking that maybe I've just read too many books? Is that possible?
Nonsense! Sacrilege!
Hear me out before you burn me at the stake, though. I mean, we've pretty much determined that I'm not smarter than the average bear, so it's not like I puzzled it out with my Sherlock-like deduction skills. The only possible explanation is that I've seen this plot in action before.
So. The 'shocker' would work out well for any readers who are younger, haven't read a million books, or frequently have the wool pulled over their eyes while reading stuff. Otherwise, go into this knowing that you'll probably not get a GASP! moment out of it, and you'll be fine.
I also felt a little let down by the lack of explanation for Sabine's condition. I know that not everything has a nice and tidy answer, but I was hoping for something. Even an educated guess would have made me happy.
Alas, no. The reason she lives two lives is because...she lives two lives.
The story revolves around Sabine, and whether or not she can (or should) pick one life to live. Which basically boils down to whether or not she should kill herself. The whole broken arm thing (see the blurb) leads her to believe that she can end it in one life, and still live happily ever after in the other.
Ooooooh. Tricky.
See, in both lives she has some reason to want to stay, but it's unbearably hard for her to keep switching back and forth. And for this reason alone, you kinda want her to be able kill herself in one life. Which was weird, 'cause I don't actually think suicide is a good idea. But at the same time, that whole switching back and forth thing sounded awful.
Don't worry, though, the author doesn't seem to condone killing yourself either. Which is nice, considering this is a young adult title.
Ok. So if she can make it so she only has one life, then the question naturally turns into which life she should choose.
At first it seems pretty easy. Go with the life where your folks haven't stuffed you into a psyche ward, right?
Ehhhh.
Naturally, she meets and falls in love with Mr. Wonderful while she's stuck in the loony bin. And, of course, Mr. Wonderful is the only person who actually believes her about the whole Two-Life thing. But Mr. Wonderful has a SECRET! He repeatedly tells Sabine he doesn't want her to chose not to kill herself because of him, even though it's obvious they have feelings for each other.
I'm pretty sure you'll figure out the SECRET if I give you any more information about the book, so I'm just going to shut up now...
Anyhoo, he wants her to choose to keep both lives because it's a special opportunity.
I have to say, I was satisfied with the ending, even though I saw it coming. Also, this is a stand-alone novel, which made it quite a breath of fresh air for me. It was nice to be able to close a book and just be finished with it.
All in all, not a bad way to pass the time.

So. The 'shocker' would work out well for any readers who are younger, haven't read a million books, or frequently have the wool pulled over their eyes while reading stuff. Otherwise, go into this knowing that you'll probably not get a GASP! moment out of it, and you'll be fine.
I also felt a little let down by the lack of explanation for Sabine's condition. I know that not everything has a nice and tidy answer, but I was hoping for something. Even an educated guess would have made me happy.
Alas, no. The reason she lives two lives is because...she lives two lives.
The story revolves around Sabine, and whether or not she can (or should) pick one life to live. Which basically boils down to whether or not she should kill herself. The whole broken arm thing (see the blurb) leads her to believe that she can end it in one life, and still live happily ever after in the other.
Ooooooh. Tricky.
See, in both lives she has some reason to want to stay, but it's unbearably hard for her to keep switching back and forth. And for this reason alone, you kinda want her to be able kill herself in one life. Which was weird, 'cause I don't actually think suicide is a good idea. But at the same time, that whole switching back and forth thing sounded awful.
Don't worry, though, the author doesn't seem to condone killing yourself either. Which is nice, considering this is a young adult title.
Ok. So if she can make it so she only has one life, then the question naturally turns into which life she should choose.
At first it seems pretty easy. Go with the life where your folks haven't stuffed you into a psyche ward, right?
Ehhhh.
Naturally, she meets and falls in love with Mr. Wonderful while she's stuck in the loony bin. And, of course, Mr. Wonderful is the only person who actually believes her about the whole Two-Life thing. But Mr. Wonderful has a SECRET! He repeatedly tells Sabine he doesn't want her to chose not to kill herself because of him, even though it's obvious they have feelings for each other.
I'm pretty sure you'll figure out the SECRET if I give you any more information about the book, so I'm just going to shut up now...
Anyhoo, he wants her to choose to keep both lives because it's a special opportunity.
I have to say, I was satisfied with the ending, even though I saw it coming. Also, this is a stand-alone novel, which made it quite a breath of fresh air for me. It was nice to be able to close a book and just be finished with it.
All in all, not a bad way to pass the time.

Sometimes, just sometimes, I randomly pick a book off the shelf at the library. Sometimes I haven't even heard of the book - or the author. And sometimes, it turns out to be a 5 star read! This is one of those times.
Classed as YA, but I found it in the general fiction section. It certainly feels like a YA - but I enjoy YA every now and again, it definitely doesn't distract from the story. It's page-turning, gripping ..not in a thriller type way, but a "what choice is she going to make" way.
A young girl is living two lives. Literally. At the stroke of midnight, she swaps lives to her other "self" and lives that day again - as herself, but with another family, in another house, with different friends. Sounds confusing, but it's not.
I loved every page and glad I was on holidays so I could read without too many distractions :)

A powerful book about love or life, Jessica Shirvington introduces readers once again to an intriguing and heart breaking world. While I felt there were somethings I wanted more depth in and for the characters to be more likeable, Between The Lives was a great success that was extremely addictive. One word to describe this book would be; beautiful.
Sabine lives two worlds. In one life (Wellesley) she is rich, has a perfect boyfriend and respected; in the other(Roxbury), she is low on money and her life is rather glum. She lives each day twice, once in each of her words, shifting back at 12:00 am every 24 hours. But when Sabine realises that there has been a glitch, her secret becomes exposed and Sabine must choose between life or death, perfect love or life. Sometimes, the smallest things matter greatly.
The characters, on majority were rather loveable and relatable. The only flaw I with Sabine was that she never seemed to shut up. She constantly talked for an entire page and I just felt overloaded and confused as she was the main source of info dumping. Other than that, Sabine was pretty close to perfect for someone who managed to change her personality and image in her completely opposite lives. She was sensitive but it was honest and comprehendible in Sabine's circumstances.
Ethan was my absolute favourite character. Not only was he creepishly dark and interesting to read about, but also he was easy to relate and admire. He was smart about the way he accomplished things and wasn't naive, but not irritating for being too stubbornly obstinate simultaneously. Jess created such a fascinating supporting character that I simply just fell in love with. One tiny complaint could only be that his way of sharing emotions was rather poor but in the end, and I repeat, in the end, Jess assures us that we will have some sort of satisfaction in one form of another.
I was completely blown away with the romance, it was heart-wrenchingly exquisite. Sabine and Ethan are one of the best literary couples I've come across in some time (meaning 3 months) and I simply relished those ravishing scenes. It not only broke my heart, but also opened my eyes that not everything will always go as planned, but in somehow,there is always light in every dark situation. *dies of feels*
'"I'm ready, Ethan. You were right. I WAS lost. But you found me, between the lives."' This quote would have to be my star. It is just another example of how beautiful this book is and the prose- oh the prose is magnificent. I cannot press how much the writing skills Jess showed off impacted me. I seriously cannot get over it.
Two major flaws:
1) The plot. I enjoyed about, 75% of the plot. Jess caught me into this skilfully crafted world gorgeously but what I thought afterwards, in my own smarminess of a summary. A girl who lives in two worlds and tries to kill herself with these unnecessary experiments. In brief, that is pretty much what happened, but Jess just managed to steer slightly away from that problem.
2) The unanswered questions. I am constantly annoyed when I am left with unanswered questions from books. What I really wanted to I so was Why does only Sabine have two lives?How did it happen? Quite frankly, this was not answered properly.
All in all, Between The Lives was an earth shattering book that really threw my emotions onto the line. I adore Jess' work and will be eager to see more books like these getting written. A story about perfect love or life, this explores hidden emotions and really makes readers think. I recommend to staplers of Jess' The Violet Eden Chapters' as this will cure the thirst and other books with alternate worlds because this, was just as good as any of them. Of course, if you were not a fan of Jess' previous novels, I can still assure you that this may change your decision with large velocity.

Şu an inanılmaz derecede mutsuzum. AĞLAMAMI DURDURAMADIM YA. GELECEĞİNİ BİLDİĞİM HALDE O SAHNELERDE KENDİMİ KAYBETTİM. Bu kitaba ne zaman böyle bağlandım bilmiyorum. Güzel kitap, okuması zevkli çabuk okunuyor diye düşünüyordum ama beni böyle etkileyeceği aklımın ucundan bile geçmemişti. Çok kötüyüm dostlar. :(

İkinci okuma
Kendime ikinci kez bu yıkımı yaşatmamın sebebini gerçekten bilmiyorum.
İlk kez okuduğum zaman da yıkılmıştım, şimdi de yıkıldım.
Belki de şimdi daha fazlaydı.
Kitabı ilk kez okuduğum anı o kadar net hatırlıyorum ki... Kalbime bu kadar dokunan bir kitap okuduğumda, o kitabı okuduğum zamanı da tüm detaylarıyla hatırlıyorum. Sanırım o zamanlar sadece okumuyorum, bir şekilde yaşıyorum da.
Okuyalı inanmakta güçlük çektiğim kadar uzun bir süre olduğunu fark ettikten sonra, aklımda sürekli yeniden okuma fikri vardı. Ve daha fazla karşı koymak istemedim, hemen başladım. Yine çok kısa bir sürede bitirdim. Böyle tüm ilgimle kitaba yoğunlaşıp kısa sürede bitirince daha fazla hissedilir oluyor benim için. Haliyle kalp kırıklığım da daha fazla oldu.
Bu kez başından beri her şeyi biliyor olmak, bile bile o sona yürümek daha zordu. Çok canımı yaktı, gerçekten. Hele o mektubu okuduğumda... tam anlamıyla kendimi kaybettim, yine! Ama ne olursa olsun sevmekten vazgeçemiyorum. Bir daha ne zaman cesaret ederim bilmiyorum ama kendime okumama sözü veremiyorum. Yine bir şekilde kendimi okurken bulacağımı biliyorum.
Daha önce her şeyi detaylıca anlattığım için bu kez oralara hiç girmeyeceğim. Her şeyiyle çok güzeldi.
Ethan’ı da Sabine’i de tüm kalbimle seviyorum. İkisinin de içinde bulunduğu zorlukları, verdikleri kararları anlıyorum.
Ama yine de, birkaç bölüm daha okumalıydık, ufacık da olsa bir devam görmeyi hak etmiştik bence.💔

Kitabı bitirmiş olmanın korkunç bir ağırlığı var üzerimde. Bitmiş olmasını kabul etmek istemiyorum. Buna nasıl dayanacağımı bilemiyorum.
Şunu söylemeliyim ki, okuduğum zaman beni fazlaca etkileyeceğini, sarsılmamın kaçınılmaz olduğunu biliyordum. Fakat inanın bana, bu kadar 'çok' olacağını tahmin edememiştim. Bu kadar çok seveceğimi, delice etkileneceğimi, bu denli paramparça olacağımı kestirememiştim. Verdiğim karardan asla pişman değilim, yıkılmış, nasıl toparlanacağını bilemez bir halde olabilirim, fakat bununla mutluyum. İYİ Kİ hayatıma girdi bu kitap.

Fakat onun tek isteği, tamamen ait olabileceği tek bir hayatının olması...
Bir anda bir şeylerin değiştiğinin farkına varan Sabine, bu hayalinin gerçekleşebileceğine inanmaya başlar ve düşüncelereni destekleyebilmek için kendine bir dizi ve çok tehlikeli testler hazırlar. Şayet testler yolunda giderse, geriye yapacak tek bir şey kalıyor: Bir seçim yapmak!
Fakat bu testler öyle kolay olmuyor ve gerçekler gün yüzüne çıkmak zorunda kalıyor ve Roxbury'de zaten zor olan hayat dayanılmaz bir hal alıyor. Tüm bu berbatlığın arasında ise tutunacak dalımız Ethan oluyor. ❤
Sabine,katlandığı zorlukları düşündükçe kararlarına hak vermekten kendimi alamadığım bir karakterdi. Ve eklemeliyim ki gerçekten ama gerçekten okuduğum en güçlü karakterlerden biri. Düşünsenize, küçüklüğünüzden beri saat gece yarısını vurduğunda bambaşka bir hayata geçiş yapıyorsunuz, hafızanızdan başka hiçbir şeyi beraberinizde götüremiyorsunuz. Gittiğiniz yerde farklı bir aileniz, döndüğünüz yerde farklı bir aileniz var ve birbirleriyle yakından uzaktan alakaları yok, hiçbir anlamda. Tüm bu ikiliği idare etmek çok, çok zor.
Ethan... Kitaba dahil olduğu andan beri bende nasıl bir yer edeceğini az çok biliyordum fakat nasıl oldu da bu kadar kalbime girdi, bilmiyorum. Okurken gözlerimin içini güldürecek kadar güzel ifade ediyordu duygular��nı. Hem de öyle büyük hareketlere ihtiyaç duymadan, doğallıkla... Minicik bir şey yapıyor ya da öyle bir şey söylüyordu ki, ritmi bozulmuş kalbimi düzeltmeye çalışmakla uğraşıyordum. Sadece sırlarını ondan duymayı isterdim, bu durumu daha katlanır kılmazdı o ayrı ,ama ne bileyim, ben ondan öğrenmeyi, böyle bir anda gerçeklerle yüzleşmek zorunda kalmamayı isterdim.
O an geldiğinde ise... tek kelimeyle paramparçaydım. Kitaplar beni kolaylıkla bu hale getirmez, ve uzun süredir beni böyle dağıtan bir kitap da çıkmamıştı karşıma. Anlayacağınız ne kadar hazırlıklı başlamış olsam da kestiremediğim etkiler kaçınılmazdı. Paramparça olmuş halimde devam etmeye çalışırken gelen o son bölüm... Ahh... Beni asla yanıltmadığı için bir kez daha Ethan'ı ne kadar çok sevdiğimi fark ettim. ❤ Keşke bir epilog bölümümüz daha olsaydı bence bunu hak etmiştik. Bu kitabı okuyun, mutlaka!

Anlayacağınız ne kadar hazırlıklı başlamış olsam da kestiremediğim etkiler kaçınılmazdı. Paramparça olmuş halimde devam etmeye çalışırken gelen o son bölüm... Ahh... Beni asla yanıltmadığı için bir kez daha Ethan'ı ne kadar çok sevdiğimi fark ettim. ❤ Keşke bir epilog bölümümüz daha olsaydı bence bunu hak etmiştik. Bu kitabı okuyun, mutlaka!

Sabine iki hayatı arasında mükemmel bir denge oluşturmuş fakat hala o değişimin korkusunu üzerinden atamamıştır. Bir gün kaza sonucunda kolunu kırıp, alçıyla dolaşmak zorunda kaldığındaysa büsbütün dehşete kapılır. Ya değişim sonrası öbür hayatında da kolu kırık olursa? Yataktan kırık bir kolla kalkışını kime, nasıl izah eder?
Fakat işler Sabine'in beklediği gibi olmaz. Yıllarca deneyimlediği şeyler artık değişmeye başlamıştır. Ve bu Sabine'i daha da çok korkutur. Ailesine durumu açıklamaya çalıştığındaysa işler çirkinleşir ve onu psikoloji kliniğine kapatırlar.

Kızın gerçekten iki hayat arasında değişim geçirdiğine inanmakta zorlansa da ona bunu kanıtlaması için bir şans verir. Sabine, Ethan'a yaşadığı değişimi kanıtlamaya çalışırken bir şeylerin farkına varır; artık hayatları arasında bir seçim yapma zamanı gelmiştir.
Bu kitap, hayat sürprizlerle doludur sözünün karşılığı gibi bir şey. Çok etkileyici ve kalp kırıcı bir hikaye. Kusurları olsa da başarılı bir kurgu ve iyi yazılmış karakterlerden oluşuyor. Ana karakteri ele aldığınızda yer yer Sabine'in isyanları sızlanma ve şımarıklık gibi gelebiliyor ama empati kurulduğunda aslında ne denli zor bir şey yaşadığı daha iyi anlaşılıyor.
Bittikten sonra yazara mail atıp, neden böyle bir şey yaptın, neden tam ümitlerimizi kesmişken bizi tekrar ümitlendirip sonra perdeyi kapattın, diye sormak istedim!
Son olarak da çeviriye değinmek istiyorum. Aslı Tümerkan çevirilerinde genel olarak yaşadığım sorun bu kitapta da vardı; üzülerek söylüyorum ki basılı kitabın bile redaksiyona ihtiyacı var. En basit hatadan bahsedeceğim; liseli bir kızın kimseyle çıkmama durumunu "bekâr" kelimesiyle çeviremezsiniz. Her "single" bekâr diye çevrilmez. Çevirmenlik zor bir iş, farkındayım. Gözünden kaçmış da olabilir, o anın dalgınlığıyla da böyle çevirmiş olabilir, peki ama yayınevi neden bunu okumadan (!) basıyor? Burada kimseye ders vermek gibi bir kabalığa girmek istemiyorum ama bunu belirtme ihtiyacı hissettim :)

Kitabı bana öneren Dilek ablaya çok çok teşekkür ediyorum. Şayet önerisi olmasaydı bir yıldan fazla bir süredir kütüphanemin okunacaklar köşesinde sağlam bir yer edinmiş kitaba ne zaman başlardım hiç bilmiyorum. :'( Ve bu kadar zaman beklettiğime köpek gibi pişman olduğum nadir kitaplardan biri!

Aglamak yok, yok derken yine yikildim. Acikcasi kitabin sonunu tahmin ettim, hatta bayagi baslarda.. yine de o son sayfalarda acayip heyecanlandim. Kurgu muthis, anlatim, karakterler muthis.. Sonunu okudum, aglarken guldum filan, kitap dengemi bozdu. Iyi ki okumusum :)

Sabine, zaman zindanında oynanan, akrebin ve gece yarısını simgeleyen on ikinin rutin haline getirdikleri oyunda kullanılan bir piyondu. Akrep ne zaman on ikiyi yakaladığında oyunun kuralları gereği diğer hayatını yaşamak üzere, işkencesinin onu ele geçirmesini sağlayacak dokunuşla ileri oynatılıyordur. On sekiz senedir iki yaşamında da değişmeyen bu kurala istisnasız her gün, sebebini bilmediği bir şekilde uymak zorunda bırakılmıştır ve uzun yıllar boyunca biriktirdiği, yazılsa kağıttan bir deste haline gelebilecek tecrübeleri sonucu, bu ''yeteneğini'' ele verebilecek olan her türlü açıklığa rastlamaktan nasıl kaçabileceğini ve oyunu acımasız ellerin lehine döndürmeden nasıl yaşayabileceğini öğrenmiştir. Kimi zaman belirsizlik yüzünden daha çok karışan, kimi zaman da birkaç olayın aydınlatılması ile çözülmeye bir adım daha yaklaşılan bir düğüm var kitapta. Bu düğüm kitabın sonunda çözüldü mü diye sorsanız eğer; bazı mantıklı yanıtların geçebileceği kadar gevşetilse de, cevaplanmayı bekleyen birçok soru belirsizliğin iplerine takılmış halde kurtarılmayı bekliyor.
Saine çok beğendiğim bir kız karakter oldu. Akla gelebilecek olan her açıdan iki farklı yollara ayrılıp hiç çakışmayan bu iki hayatı dengelerken öyle bir ayar eklemiş ki, bir kefedeki hayat çökmemiş ya da diğer kefedeki hayat üstünlük sağlamamış. On sekiz sene boyunca bir yerden açık vermeyecek kadar ne yaptığını biliyor olması, bunu yaparken geçmek zorunda kaldığı yolda tökezlese bile düşmemesi, üstüne üstelik hepsini yalnız başına yapması tüm sempatimi alıp üzerine yağma hissi uyandırdı. Since this one was my first Jessica Shirvington novel, I really didn't know what to expect from this one. I was hoping for some intriguing, attention-grabbing mystery that would make me question the world and how it works... One Past Midnight gave me exactly what I wanted.
Sabine lived two lives. I was expecting to be a little confused, or maybe bored with at least one of her lives, but Shirvington definitely knows how to keep things exciting. Every little detail, ever scene from either of Sabine's lives kept me hooked. Okay, I'll admit--I do have a "favorite" from her two lives, or one that I preferred to read about more, but I really wanted to know more about both of Sabine's lives. One of them did have a bit more action and happenings, but it was good to take a break from those with the calmness and normality of her other life. There was really a good balance here, I'd say.
Now, Sabine's definitely no perfect character. In fact, she made a lot of really stupid choices and decisions throughout the novel. Really, I wanted to shake some sense into this girl some time in the middle of the book. The thing is, I totally saw her growth by the end of the novel. She finally learned to accept things and to be content with how her life (well, lives) is going to work out.
“Life’s too short. If Ethan taught me anything, that would be it. I want to get on with living mine.”
I didn't think this one would have romance in it, but it did. And boy, was Ethan a sweet guy. Well, at first, I was kind of indifferent to him and wanted him to just walk out and leave, but once I got to know more about him, the more I wanted him to be part of Sabine's life (and mine). He was the only person who believed in Sabine, even more than her own parents did.
The main idea of the book was just so intriguing. I needed to know about why Sabine was the way she was. I needed to know why suddenly things were changing. If these are also the questions in your head, you'll be disappointed. These weren't explained in the book at all. You could call this an "air of mystery" or a lack of information. Maybe some things were meant to be left alone and not dwell on any further.
This "air of mystery" did give way to some unexpected twists. Like I said, I think the book had two major twists. One was pretty much expected for me--hints were dropped everywhere, so I wasn't all that shocked. But the book's ending? Shit, I did not see that coming. I thought my eyeballs were going to bulge out of my eyes when a certain something happened... Let's just say the ending left me really satisfied, and leave it at that.
Pacing was perfect during the beginning and the end of the novel. There were a few rushed scenes toward the middle, but most of the time, my reading experience was pretty smooth with this one. Shirvington also had this easy-to-get-into writing style that made the entire reading process so much easier to go through. I was flipping pages like a pro.
In conclusion, One Past Midnight will poke at your brain and will make you question how the universe really works. You'll stay up past midnight since you'll want to know how everything wraps up. And trust me, you'll really want to know how this ends.

As soon as Between the Lives turned up on my doorstep, I started reading it straight away. With such a unique and interesting premise, it captivated me from the moment I read the blurb and saw the cover.
Sabine is a teenager who lives two lives, each completely different to the other. In one life, she’s a rebel who has a less than perfect family, one who is poor and never impressed with her. In the other, she lives a dream life as one of the most popular girls in the school who lives in a wealthy family. Every 24 hours at midnight, she shifts between one life to the next, retaining her memories of each life while she is expected to retain a completely different personality.
From describing the challenges in her Roxbury life, to her lack of passion with her ‘perfect’ boyfriend in Wellesley, I was captivated. Sabine has been going through this all of her life (or more appropriate, lives) and she’s clearly learnt how to survive by lying and being what people want her to be. As she nears her 18th birthday, never has she felt so lost. With her constant fear of letting something slip about her other identity and undergoing the traumatic shift at midnight, Sabine has never felt so alone.
That is, until she discovers a loophole when she breaks her arm and for the first time, it doesn’t carry over to her next life. She begins a series of terrifying experiments to see whether she can finally choose the life she wants to live. And that’s where everything spirals out of control and she meets the only person who will ever believe her – Ethan.
I found Between the Lives to be compelling, intelligent, and thrilling. The author describes the fear and uncertainty that Sabine feels with such clarity that it feels like you’re experiencing it along with her. From her perfect Wellesley life to growing closer to Ethan under less than ideal circumstances, Sabine’s life is fascinating. She’s constantly torn between terrifying circumstances, kind of lost between the two.
Ethan and Sabine are a couple that I found myself rooting for, hoping that they would get a happy ever after ending. With a powerful ending that pulled at the heart strings, Between the Lives packed a punch with it’s compelling story and beautiful characters that will leave you with a lasting impression. My only complaint, and it is a small one, is that we never really get answers about why Sabine lives two lives. I wish there was a sequel to this but alas, that’s not the case.

As soon as Between the Lives turned up on my doorstep, I started reading it straight away. With such a unique and interesting premise, it captivated me from the moment I read the blurb and saw the cover.
Sabine is a teenager who lives two lives, each completely different to the other. In one life, she’s a rebel who has a less than perfect family, one who is poor and never impressed with her. In the other, she lives a dream life as one of the most popular girls in the school who lives in a wealthy family. Every 24 hours at midnight, she shifts between one life to the next, retaining her memories of each life while she is expected to retain a completely different personality.
From describing the challenges in her Roxbury life, to her lack of passion with her ‘perfect’ boyfriend in Wellesley, I was captivated. Sabine has been going through this all of her life (or more appropriate, lives) and she’s clearly learnt how to survive by lying and being what people want her to be. As she nears her 18th birthday, never has she felt so lost. With her constant fear of letting something slip about her other identity and undergoing the traumatic shift at midnight, Sabine has never felt so alone.
That is, until she discovers a loophole when she breaks her arm and for the first time, it doesn’t carry over to her next life. She begins a series of terrifying experiments to see whether she can finally choose the life she wants to live. And that’s where everything spirals out of control and she meets the only person who will ever believe her – Ethan.
I found Between the Lives to be compelling, intelligent, and thrilling. The author describes the fear and uncertainty that Sabine feels with such clarity that it feels like you’re experiencing it along with her. From her perfect Wellesley life to growing closer to Ethan under less than ideal circumstances, Sabine’s life is fascinating. She’s constantly torn between terrifying circumstances, kind of lost between the two.
Ethan and Sabine are a couple that I found myself rooting for, hoping that they would get a happy ever after ending. Wow. Just wow. I finished Between The Lives about a minute ago, and I still have tears in my eyes. But then again, what's a good Shirvington book without the tears?
Once again, Jessica has managed to completely flip the ideas of the world upside down. Who else would have thought of such a deep and creative idea?
Sabine's story is one that is truly unique. There has been no other like it, much like with Jessica's other series. The way she has had to adjust to her world, or should I say worlds, to learn to cope with them both and then to come to terms with that mentally, is something that we read about and think, 'oh yeah, that'd be cool,' when in reality, it takes so much strength and self control and sense of self to be able to survive through all that and come to terms with who you are.
Ethan. What is it with all the hot guys being called Ethan these days?
Anyway, these characters that Jessica creates, that are broken and are struggling with secrets and stereotypes that are put on them, are so pivotal to the protagonist’s story and how she grows and changes, not only physically, but emotionally.
Choices are what we all have to face, and they can be confusing and can make us unsettled and sometimes have an attitude of just wanting to give up. Between the Lives addresses these themes and explores them in a very complex way. Family can give a lot of support in these times, but in Sabine's case, she did the best she could with the two lives she had.
Again, Jessica Shirvington's words and ideas have changed my perspective on life, on how I view things, and my ideas about faith and existence. Jessica is such a talented writer and the worlds that she creates are so well written that I can almost believe that they are the same as the one we live in.
This fantasy is so original and inventive that it fits into reality like it was always meant to be there.

Doğruyu söylemem gerekirse, İki Hayat Arasında, ilgimi çeken bir kitap değildi.Okumak için sabırsızlandığım söylenemezdi ama currentlyreading listemi çoğaltma hastalığım olduğundan, ne okusam diye bakınıyordum ve başlama kararı aldım.
Kitaba başladığımda düşündüğümden daha hızlı okunduğunu ve beklediğimden daha az karmaşık olduğunu görünce biraz şaşırdım açıkçası.Yazarın kullandığı dil basitti ve kitabın bu yönü güzeldi, eğer doğru dürüst bir şekilde başına oturup okumaya karar veriyorsanız bir çırpıda bitirebilirsiniz. Ama olayların daha karmaşık olması gerektiğini düşünüyorum çünkü bana göre çok durgun ilerledi. Yani iki hayatınızın olduğunu, her günü iki kez ve farklı versiyonlarda yaşadığınızı düşünün, illa ki bir şeyleri batırırsınız.Her gece yarısı değişim geçirirken yalnız olmak için çabalıyorsunuz, her gece kusuyorsunuz ve iki hayatta da çoğu saati uyanık geçirdiğiniz günlerde çok yorgun ve uykusuz oluyorsunuz.İlla ki bir şeyler karışır çünkü insanlar sorular sormaya başlar.
Bu yüzden asıl olaylar Sabine'in karışan hayatında, Roxbury'de, olurken Wellesley çok durgun geldi bana.Kitabın çoğunda o hayatta hiçbir şey olmadı ve asıl karmaşayı Roxbury'de gördük.

Sabine, nasıl olduğuna bir türlü karar veremediğim bir karakter çünkü hem iki hayatı idare ettirecek kadar zekiydi hem de kendi eczanelerinden ilaç çalacak, kanlı sargı bezlerini okul çantasına koyacak kadar salaktı. Ama bir yandan da psikolojisini böyle sağlam tutabilmesi çok güzeldi.İki hayatında da ne istediğine karar vermişti ve iki farklı kişi olmayı başararak uyum sağlamıştı.Bu yönüyle bence güçlü bir karakterdi.
Ethan'a gelirsek.. Gördüğüm kadarıyla herkes bayılmış ve çok sevmiş ama ben bu kadar sevemedim.Bana göre, kitapta çok uzun zaman sonra etkin olabilmeye başladı ve kitap da çok çabuk bitti.Sevmedim demiyorum ama bayılamadım da. Evet nazikti, düşünceliydi ve asıl gerçekleri öğrendiğinizde Sabine için neleri göze aldığını görebiliyordunuz ama Ethan'a kitapta çok az yer verilmişti diye düşünüyorum.Yani Dex'i bile daha uzun gördük, o kadar diyeyim.
"Bu dünyada sen olmazsan paylaştığımız her anın hatırası kaybolacak. Sadece başkaları bizi gördüğü için varız.Varlığımın bir parçasası..." yutkundu, "...önemli bir parçası, sadece sen burada onu gördüğün için var."
Kitabı okuyan çoğu kişi, ağladığını söylemiş ve okumaya başladığımda bunu bekledim.Gerçekten ağlayacağımı düşünüyordum ama sanırım duygusuzun teki olduğumdan hiç ağlamadım.Yapabildiği en büyük etki boğazıma bir yumru oturtmasıydı, o kadar.Ve bu yüzden de bir parça hayal kırıklığına uğradım.
"Buradayım. Seni bırakmayacağım. Burada olduğum sürece, söz veriyorum, seni bırakmayacağım."
Sonuna dair bazı tahminlerim vardı ama bir şekilde böyle bağlanmasını beklemiyordum.İki tahminimden biri olur diye bekliyordum ama ikisinin de olmasını HİÇ beklememiştim.Yazar ikisini de bağlayıp insanı öyle bir hale sokuyor ki, kitap bittiğinde kaç puan vereceğimi bilememiştim. Şuan yorumu yazıyorum ve hala bu konuda bir fikrim yok.

İki Hayat Arasında, aslında size harika bir kurgu sunuyor. İlk önce bunu bilmenizde yarar var. Şöyle ki tür olarak bilim kurgu olsa da tamamen o tarz değil. Aşk var, iki apayrı hayat var ve bir de olmazsa olmaz şahane bir baş erkek karakter var. Şimdi bu bileşenlerin bütününü düşünün. İşte size İki Hayat Arasında!

Yazarın paralel evrene ilginç bir bakış açısı vardı. Hikaye karakterden dolayı fazla depresifti. Bunları bir araya toplayınca harika bir kitap ortaya çıkmış. Sonuuuuuu! Bi sonunu tahmin edebildim ve edebildiğim için gıcık oldum. Gerçi bu şekilde bitmeseydi daha da gıcık olabilirdim. Yine de sevdim. Bu tür kitapları böyle uykusuz, sersem gibiyken okuyunca daha çok seviyorum ahah :D Sürekli "sonuuu" demek istiyorum. Her iki kelimede bi "sonuuu" "sonuuuuuu" "sonuuuuuuu" demek filan işte.
5 Puan vermiş olmama rağmen tam bi 4,5'luk. Çünkü "sonuuuu" Kördüğüm'ü bundan önce okumuş olmamdır. Bünyeye bi akıl hastanesi ve "sonuuuuuu" *spoiler-vermek-istemediğim-için-susuyorum* yetiyor. Kitapları arka arkaya okuyunca o kadar da etkilemiyor bilesiniz. Ona göre okuma programınızı ayarlayın :3

Hakkında fazlasıyla olumlu yorum işittiğim bir kitap olduğu için beklentilerim ister istemez artmıştı ama beklediğim kadar etkilenmedim ne yazık ki.
Türüne göre keyifli bir kitaptı, herkes gibi yazarın dilini beğendim- hepsi bu.
