Cael Stone #2

Dragon Fire

Rate this book
After learning the Queen of Galia wishes to destroy her, and sent men—including her father’s killer—to Alyria to arrest her, Erynn and her friend, Adena, fled Caraden Castle and set out on a journey to find her birth parents and the Order of the Cael, a group she hopes can help her. Blamed soon after for murdering the King of Alyria, they now find themselves hunted by Alyrians and Galians.

In their race to escape, they find themselves hampered by two things: there are only two bridges out of Alyria and both are heavily guarded—and they have also learned of a Galian plot to kill the Crown Prince of Alyria and the only possible solution to warning him in time lies in the completely opposite direction.

Choosing to save the Crown Prince—and possibly achieve justice for her father at the same time—Erynn sets out west with Adena to try and locate an old friend, who she hopes has the falcon they need to send an important message. Along the way, she discovers more about who she is and why the Queen of Galia wishes to destroy her—and the destiny it seems she may have been born to face.

Dragon Fire is the second book in the Cael Stone trilogy, following on from The Last Falcon.

I have not read the first book in the series, and this sadly meant that I struggled to get to grips with the story. There was no initial recap or round-up of the characters and events from book one, so Dragon Fire felt more like a continuation as opposed to a stand-alone story.

This was a shame, as it prevented me from feeling invested in the characters and their world. Right from the very start, characters arrived with no introduction, motives were left unclear, and key events fell flat as their significance was missed.

It felt as though large parts of the book were left with little action, and although this isn't necessarily a bad thing, it did feel a lot like superfluous padding. The dialogue was a little stilted at times as key plot points were often set up using clunky exposition.

Despite this, the world-building was great and this fictional world showed promise. Once you do get to the bottom of what is happening and why, the premise is also intriguing. Erynn, the main character, is plucky and intelligent yet she also has a kind heart. These are undoubtedly the parts that manage to rescue the story and show potential for the last book in the trilogy.

Although Dragon Fire missed the mark for me, if you enjoy reading fantasy, why not give it a try?

I was a little confused while reading this book. I think that was mostly because I have not read the first book in this series. I won this book through a Goodreads giveaway. I had entered the giveaway for the first book as well, but only won this one, I guess it was meant to be.
This book took a little longer than usual to get and hold my attention, but once it did I couldn't stop reading it. This is a very fast paced and exciting book. Just like others are saying, this book is a bit like Game of Thrones, The Lord of the Rings and Eragon. They are also saying Harry Potter, but I don't really see it. I know this has dragons and elves, but other than that it really isn't like Harry Potter.

"After learning the Queen of Galia wishes to destroy her, and sent men—including her father’s killer—to Alyria to arrest her, Erynn and her friend, Adena, fled Caraden Castle and set out on a journey to find her birth parents and the Order of the Cael, a group she hopes can help her.

Along the way, she discovers more about who she is and why the Queen of Galia wishes to destroy her—and the destiny it seems she may have been born to face." -Goodreads

I thought I would just use their (Goodreads.com) description of the book for a change. I don't even know if I could describe this book, there is just too much to it.
I really like this book, even if I didn't fully know what was going on in the beginning. I liked it so much that I am going to be buying the first one very soon. Word of advice; never read books out of order. It can make things very confusing or very interesting. :)
I highly recommend this to anyone who's interested. It is well worth checking out. It is very interesting, fast paced, plenty of danger, well written. Just a good read all around.

I won this book through the Goodreads First Reads program, and I was super excited. I got my hands on the first book in the series from the library, and I’m glad I did because this book picks up where the last one left off!
Right off the bat, I feel like mentioning that this book is quite a bit heavier and longer than the first in the series. Having set down the first and picked up the second, it was obvious that this was where the story really gets started.
I read on the author’s page that this series is going to be a long one, which was pretty obvious by the end. This book is a lot of world building and character introduction, and I still feel like we haven’t really hit the action. There are bits where it gets intriguing, but for the most part this feels like a lead up to something bigger.
I like Erynn. I really like Erynn. She’s fourteen, and I feel like her age shows appropriately. She’s just as confused and caught off guard as everyone around her. It makes you feel like you’re actually there with her and learning all of this alongside her.
This series isn’t finished yet, and that’s obvious by the way this book ends. I feel like I was left hanging a bit, because of the unanswered questions that are everywhere. Which is a good thing, because that’s what encourages a reader to grab for the next book!

Just won this from First Reads! This is my first time winning and I'm very excited!

I haven't read the first book in the series though; I hope it isn't mandatory in order to read this book.

Thank you to the author, Colleen Ruttan for the book!

I liked it but I had quite a few problems with it. I liked how it was about best friends not the same old same old girl meets a boy and he helps her and than fall in love. but the main character seemed to get more annoying and she didn't really do anything but act rely on other people to help and save her and her friends and a lot of luck. also though the dwarfs were mentioned they never appeared. I also wanted a little romance but I did like the fresh take on a ya fantasy. I also wanted more elves and dragons. I didn't like how they were captured so often and yet still got away and how eryann never even thought about training or carrying a weapon and how she never seemed to get how dangers the trip was. But other then that I liked it. it was easy and fast to read and not like most ya fantasy in both a bad and a good way. I think that someone new to fantasy or not into romance would enjoy this. Oh I also hate how the ending is so open that you would think that there is another book but I have looked and there is no hint of a third book out and this was out in 2013.

Dragon Fire, like the first book in the series, is a very fast-paced page-turner of an adventure. It starts just where The Last Falcon left off and very abruptly, having no real beginning of its own. It throws you right into the action, assuming that you've read The Last Falcon and just continuing on from there.

Also like the The Last Falcon it has a few sections that feel like too much telling, with too many names thrown in and too much "pay attention, this is significant back-story information" that should have been revealed in a more natural way.

However, unlike The Last Falcon this book did have a somewhat satisfying ending. The story isn't over yet, but one part of the journey is at least and there have been some great twists and turns along the way so far. Hopefully, the rest of the tale will be out sometime soon and will live up to this great start.

I won this book in a contest and never posted a review on it. I was going through my collection of books to read before a few of the newer books I want to read come out and I realized that I had this to reread. This book overall was a really good book, I didnt unfortunately read the first book so I was a bit lost when I started to read it. But in the end of the 2nd read I thoroughly enjoyed it and have reccomended it to a few of my friends who are interested in the same genre books I enjoy. All in all this book to me is a 4 of 5 stars.

I will say now that I finally received by copy of Dragon Fire in the post today, after nearly 3 months of waiting :( But I don't mind the wait, I just look forward to reading it, although it may be a while before I can make time for it as I am currently reading Shadowplay, The Hobbit and The Knife of Never Letting Go, but I will read it I reckon in about a month's time.

Second novel of Cael Stone fantasy series. Erynn learns she is a daughter of Megan and can talk to dragons. Finds her father's killer and is in constant fear of being captured by him. Is captured and escapes several times. And receives a mysterious gift from Krystalix.

Erynn and Adena are still on the run from Lord Caden and Marik. Every moment could be their last. However, Soren/Krystalix has given Erynn a gift, a gift that could save her and her friends if she only can figure out how to use it.

Quick paced and exciting.

Interest and lack of ending

Great story line which kept me interested. Writing skill and sentence structure average. The lack of a finish in the saga highly disappointing.

Fun and fast paced!

As expected, it was better than the first book (which was also good!). There was plenty of action - and elves...my favorite of the Faery Folk!
